Measures of Success

Send your ideas, questions, pictures, stories, videos, and fanart to jennyfansofdavid@gmail.com.

More montage love…apparently, I’m still montaging like crazy.  These are screencaps from his VH1 Playlist clips.

Okay, I’m done.  Thank you for your patience.

Does anyone really buy music anymore?  Not so much.

There will come a day, my friends, and it will come soon, when all music will be free and digital.  See something you like?  Download it!  It is a war of attrition, and the record labels are losing.  They still want you to buy CDs (and the measure of artists’ success still depends on in to a great degree), and they certainly want you to buy digitial music, but truth be told, there is so much piracy out there, the house of cards that is the present construction of the music industry is going to collapse.

Many fans download music illegally and/or fileshare.  Got a group of 10 friends?  Well, you don’t all have to buy David Archuleta’s album, right?  One of you can download it and share the files with the rest.  It’s just so easy.

Just a mere 8 years ago when Napster was getting sued by recording artists, fans still bought CDs.  How many CDs did artists sell?  As Becky pointed out to me yesterday, in 2000, N’Sync sold 1.1 million copies of its CD the very day it dropped, and 2.4 million in the first week!  That simply does not happen today, even for the most established and popular artists.  Daughtry, the best selling album of 2007, sold 3.2 million units in all of 2007.

In the brave new world of free music, artists will make their money from concert tickets, merchandising, and songwriting credits.  Success will be measured the same way: except instead of counting how many units are sold, the labels will count units downloaded and the live streams played.

Speaking of that, I have already received at least half a dozen emails from concerned fans this week telling me about websites offering free downloads of the complete David Archuleta album.  The numbers have been impressive.

Check out this graph from Networked Insights (click to make it bigger), who posits that Billboard’s measure of success is out-dated:

This articles notes that “while sales and airplay do play a role in determining music popularity, those metrics are becoming less relevant as millions of social interactions around songs, albums and artists are happening online everyday.”  They point specifically to David Archuleta: “American Idol winner David Archuleta’s “Crush” is third on Networked Insights’ list due to the strong interactive component of the show transferring to online interactions.”  That’s us!  (Thanks for the article, Carol.)

Chris Sligh (remember him?) likes David’s album

Chris Sligh, a finalist on American Idol Season 6, blogged about David: (Thanks for the link, Clarisse.)

I just listened to Archie’s entire album streaming on the Z100 website.

I gotta say, they knocked it out of the park with this album. My concerns on him being a Rick Astley clone are now completely gone. The dude sounds GREAT singing really good pop songs. There’s nothing ground-breaking here, but the pop songs are well-written and he sounds really, really good.

The guy deserves major props. Er, well the songwriters and producers do, too.

FOD’er Tom Reviews David’s Album….and you can, too!

Faithful FOD’er Tom created a video review in two parts.  You can do this, too!  Send me your video!  And of course, visit our new Music tab and write your reviews: each song has its own page.

TV Guide Mentions Only Two Performers as Headliners for Macy’s Parade: Guess Who’s One of Them?

Yes.  David Archuleta. (Click to make it bigger).

And while we’re at it, TV Guide also gives a blurb about David’s iCarly appearance.  The producer called David a “dream” to work with (again, click it to make it bigger):

Thanks for the scans, scorpio!

You Know You’ve Hit the Big-Time When You Are a Question on Jeopardy!

The square flipped over last night on Jeopardy, and there was the answer we could all give the question to: “The teen cutie who won the Most Fanatic Fans Award.”

Who is David Archuleta?  Why, yes.  That is correct.

Thanks for the information, Carol!

Just in Case David Doesn’t Receive A For-Real Platinum Record…

I’m guessing that Jive will pony up the money to present David with a platinum record for Crush, but since it will probably take that forever and a day to happen, FOD’er Kelsey went ahead and did it herself:

Vote on VH1

Don’t forget!  Let’s make sure that David Cook gets to introduce good friend David Archuleta’s Crush as the #1 video again this week!   VOTE!  VOTE!  VOTE!
