It was fun and games at Studio 5!

Brooke Walker from Studio 5 of KSL in Salt Lake City dis a fantastic job in sharing a 2 part interview with David on Thursday and Friday.

Here is the link to the Friday interview:

And Omar has a comment to that tentative response from David regarding a Snoop Dogg collaboration  πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

And yesterday there were a couple of segments on FB live where David played games!  We love David and game playing!   The giggles alone.  The game is “Never Have I Ever”

And who hasn’t got changed in their car.  Raise those hands high!

Part 1

and Part II  (I can’t seem to rotate it, sorry)

Love Brooke Walker as an interviewer!  Anyone who can make David giggle like that is cool with me!

David Archuleta 2.0

David has been busy with interviews, and they have been fantastic.

David is making it clear he’s not the pre mission David. He can’t be.  So he has spend some time explaining what has changed, how he’s changed, and how he’s in a more comfortable, and better place.

This is why I LOVE the intros to his songs.  It’s like David is giving us our own personal interviews.  He’s answering the questions that are in our heads.  And he’s doing it in a way that weaves in beautifully with his music.

Planes, trains and automobiles ~ we did it all to see David in Kansas City!

This is my first posting week back since doing a 3 concert journey starting Oct. 31 and finishing Nov. 4th.  Kalei has done a great job at covering Nashville show, Joanie is covering her home town and Hallowe’en show in Minneapolis and I am covering the show at Knuckleheads Saloon (actually moved to the much larger garage!) in Nov. 2, 2017.

And travelling to this show involved planes, trains and automobiles.  Steve Martin and the late John Candy would be proud πŸ™‚

After a day to decompress after the MN show on Oct. 31, we had an early start from Minneapolis with Joanie, so that we could get to the venue in plenty of time.  Our plan was to rent a car to take us from Minneapolis to KC, and then fly from KC to Nashville.

Thank heavens the weather co operated on our virtually straight line trip south, but sadly, the trains did not.  The venue was located in a very industrial part of Kansas City surrounded by, you guessed it, train tracks and trains delivering materials to the industrial establishments in the area.  I’m sure this isn’t normally an issue, but on the day of the concert, just as we arrived, an unusually long train was slowly making it’s way along some of the industrial tracks.  We knew we were close, but it was soooooo far!  We had a significant wait which got the pulse racing there for a bit!

Just as we reached that point of real concern, we saw a light at the end of the tunnel, or end of the caboose!   And beyond it, there was a SIGN!!!  Literally and figuratively!  Could not have planned it better lol

One hundred metres from the tracks was the venue.

But don’t let the exterior fool you.  The surroundings were a bit sketchy, but the venue itself was very nice, with fairly good acoustics.  As we parked we say folks we knew, and some we did not, but soon would.   We settled beside the long wall of Knuckleheads “Garage” and listened to a fabulous sound check while in line.

Joanie,Pastel, Tina

As we waiting, we took in the local sights.  And sounds.  And made mental notes of the local requirements πŸ™‚

Inside the venue was insanely cool and big!  Really big!

The VIP was very intimate and David was still on vocal rest but unlike Minnesota, we were allowed to ask David some yes / no questions.  Joanie and I had some prepared in advance, a perfect road trip thing to do!  David answered Joanie’s question about singing Waiting in the Stars one day live.

My dream was to listen to Aiming for Hope as a VIP song so I asked “David, do you enjoy singing Aiming for Hope at VIP?”.  It was the best yes / no question that got me close.  Before David got too far in his answer, Kari interjects “It’s a good song to test out the keyboard”.  And with that, David launched into it!  Kari is such a dream, she KNOWS!!!!!  David provided his intro and context on how it came about.  It made total sense that it was one of the first songs written for the CD, because it really set the stage for many more of the songs to come.  It was simply wonderful listening to it live a capella.  Just wonderful.

I’m not sure if all of you read my summary of some of the songs on the CD (link here) but this song is extremely special to me and relatable to all of us.  And, David sang it that way, with all of us in mind.

Here it is now:

The VIP was shortened due to the fact David could not speak but we were able to speak to him for a minute or so and I took the time to explain why the lyrics on the shirt I wore were important.

Before leaving for this concert road trip, I spent some time at a local T shirt shop to get my Hallowe’en T shirt designed and also to print a T with some of my favourite words from David and his collaborators.  As a writer, I have to think David likes to know which message resonates with the readers or listeners, and why.  I felt incredibly blessed to share what resonated with me.

During the wait for the concert to start, it was lovely to chat with Amber and Emily and of course pick up a number of CDs!  The merch table looked amazing and very professional.  Remember, when you go to a concert, merch is where the artist has alot of control re: what to sell and although the venue does get a percentage of proceeds, the artist can do well.  So, remember to buy if you can, it helps!

Amber certainly is her brother’s sister. When she listens to you, she has the same intent listen-to-understand focus as David does.  She thinks before she speaks.  And she finds simple things endearing.  And Emily is a sweetheart and girl after my own heart in her inspiring fitness journey.  Fun to chat with both of them.

I ended up standing near the stage next to two fans that travelled from Nebraska.  They had been fans since American Idol and were incredibly engaged during the entire concert.  Janey and I gave them our signed 8 x 10 posters which they enjoyed.

David has SOOOOOO many long time fans that were just waiting for this opportunity to see him again.  In their eyes, David never went away, he is just took a longer than usual time to get to their neck of the woods πŸ™‚  .

The show was amazing and just sealed the deal for me on my preferred concert experience.  General admission.  All the way.  Just so much more interactive, David can feel the excitement more and we get to feel the excitement of those around us.  I cannot see David adding Something Bout Love at the last minute if the audience hadn’t been free to stand up. Of course you can stand at seated venues, but in GA it seems easier to sway with your pals, link arms, fist pump together and all those fundamental and critical concert behaviours.  Fundamental!  And critical!  And is was so much fun doing it with Joanie, Tina, Janey, Max and many others, fans new and not-so-new πŸ™‚

Here are a mix of pictures and vids from the event, all are from pastel or FOD unless otherwise stated.

It was hot inside!  I always feel we should have towels at the ready to toss on the stage, not the other way around lol!

He Lives in You snippet!

Something Bout Love!  He threw this in once he realized how responsive the audience was, I’m convinced of it!

My Kind of Perfect!

When David discussed his recent visit with the orphans in Manila, it broke my heart.  And David’s.  Very emotional.

David’s discussion of Holt International is not filler.  This is not just another cause for the tour.  This is foundational for David.  It seems to me that he has found his charitable passion.  It’s so him.

*** Note from Pastel:  Christmas / holidays are coming.  If you are considering donating to charities, you don’t have to necessarily sponsor a child in order to donate to Holt International.  There are many ways to support children.  More from me in a future post ****

David and Leah

David Archuleta at KC VIP

At the VIP, we were asked to provide yes / no questions to David and uber fan and sweetheart Leah asked for Touch My Hand.   I could see wheels turning as the question came, as David and his band don’t normally have this song queued up.

But given David is the type of person he is, and saw the hope on Leah’s face, he scrambled with his MD Brady, and the rest of the band, and voila.  Here it is.  Enjoy!  It was indeed a highlight.

Leah stood beside us during the evening and danced the night away.  And David came coming back to her time after time.

And then as Crush was played, he turned to Leah yet again to sing some of the words.  It was one of the best shows for being an audience member since there was a beautiful story of engagement and admiration unfolding over the course of the evening.  It was so sweet to see.

We left the venue absolutely thrilled with what we had just experienced.  We event talked to the gentlemen at the door about his thoughts on the concert.  Let’s just say we agreed to disagree regarding charity promotion at a concert πŸ˜‰

After we left, Joanie experienced a close encounter of a strange kinds with a series of train tracks and discovered that yes, you actually can traverse them without actually heading in the same direction as a train lol!  Again, a very interesting neighbourhood!  Our quest to find dinner at that late evening led us to a pancake place close to our hotel, and who did we run into?  Leah and her awesome mom Cindy!

Leah is one interesting girl; she writes a blog with her sister on different perspectives of the same issue.  It’s called Upside Down and you can go to it by clicking on the pic below!

And FINALLY closing with what David does at his GA events and also his seated events this tour, he shakes hands or fist bumps.  Just a nice geture and way to to close the memorable evening

Did any of your reading this post go to Kansas City?  Love it if you could share in comments your reflections too. I’m just one opinion πŸ™‚ so ‘d love to hear yours!

Will be back tonight with the Idaho State U concert news!!!!  Have a good Saturday all! <3

    Good morning,
Great recap, I so enjoy reading all the recaps and fan stories, I don’t post very often but I am lurking everyday and appreciate everything here at FOD.
I sometimes listen to the radio and shake my head and think how did that get on the radio? I guess it’s not always about talent. I’m always amazed at David’s voice and what he does with a song, but most of all I admire him for what he stands for and the caring person he is.

  2. GrammyJ says:

Thanks for the fantastic review of the Kansas City show! I love all the details. In commens on the last thread Rose asked about David’s sales for Postcards In The Sky. I choose not to worry about that any more. Of course it is low due to David being out of the limelight for years, not having a record label and pretty much no marketing other than his social media. If you factor in all that his sales don’t look so bad plus people don’t buy music any more. Most people stream their music. David’s Spotify streaming numbers are good for an indie artist. He had 988,320 monthly listeners which is way more than most of his fellow Idol contestants other than the ones with major record label contracts. It certainly isn’t fair to compare his sales to Taylor Swift who has a major label and is probably one of the most popular artists in the US.

    • Alwaysafan says:

Also the fact that Postcards has been staying in the top 150 on the pop iTunes Charts isn’t too shabby either.;)

    • kimk says:

people buy music.. got an email from deseret or motab forget which one telling me how well Nathan did on the charts now buy πŸ˜’
ha anyway yes as for Taylor she was in the last thread that being said more then him just not being around so was JT for a long while he came back blew it out of the water with sales.
yup no promo etc him changing up things with his music not bad just saying didnt help least guess not anyway. me I don’t care except yes was looking forward to the FB live and the music video.
concert vids recaps pics etc are good though was just responding to the poster. do have a bone to pick with that Nathan dude though ha but will keep mum for the most part on that. ha so deleted that email though🀣😎

      • VaBeachJudy says:

Kim, DISAPOINTED in Nathan and Gracie. Not a word of support for David’s EPs or the new album by either! Think David is happy and we know he is patient when building his career! Think he has a plan, since we know shows are coming in 2028! WHAT ELSE is the question!

        • VaBeachJudy says:

          lol. 2018!

        • kimk says:

ha well the way that works.. if Postcards charted well they would be all over it if you know what I mean. kind of like way back when they dropped D for the Biebs.. whatever hey we got our own private pop star and ha from the pics vids up top not too shabby AT ALL!! πŸ˜‰

          more please!!

        • Seven7Swans says:

David is no longer on Highway Records. Nathan Pacheco is — that’s why Desert Book would be promoting him. These are the decisions that David has made. He’s now with Archie Music and Tree Tone Music. Whatever. LOL.
He has cut ties with EVERYONE who has helped him succeed in the past and is probably being encouraged to do so. Why? You tell me.

  3. Alwaysafan says:

Update: Postcards is #91 on pop this morning! I love to check the charts from time to time in case you all haven’t guessed by now;)

  4. VaBeachJudy says:

Waving hello! A SUPER Saturday to all! πŸ™‚

FANTASTIC recap of the Kansas City Knucklehead’s show! Thank you Pastel for the pics, vids and your recap! LOVED that David reached out to Leah and say Touch My Hand for her! ❀

Hope all going to Pocatello tonight has safe travels and a BLAST! πŸ™‚

ENJOY your day! πŸ™‚ Off to work for me!

  5. Miss Vicki DA#2014 says:

Hey VaBeachJudy….and everyone else here at FOD this fine Saturday afternoon……Love the Kansas City review and re cap…..I’m most proud of the fact that Postcards in the Sky is up to #2 on the Amazon Best Seller list…..WAY TO GO DAVID!!! Have a great Saturday folks….will be checking in tonight for the Pocatello show..isn’t that where the Potato Museum is located???? If so that’s where David wore the purple/teal/black scarf I gave him one year back in the day……….Miss Vicki

  6. VaBeachJudy says:

Off to work, but will be ANXIOUS to get home to see what’s happening in Pocatello! Any SURPRISES David?

  7. Jenny says:

Pastel! Loved your recap! Oh how wish I could be at all the concerts lol! Your impression of Amber is spot on! She gives off a very similar vibe to David’s and is very beautiful. I have to remember to think before I speak as well. πŸ˜‚ I’m so glad that you got to hear “Aiming for Hope”. I wonder if we will ever hear “Upset with Me” live? Love that story about Leah! How exciting for her!

  8. Jenny says:

Two short comments. Some peeps might appreciate a bathroom break in the shows. I mean, i just could not miss anything of the songs. I know, TMI. General admission can be really fun but some folks have trouble standing for a long time and I think very short folks are at a disadvantage!

    • kimk says:

      ha Jenny I hear you🀣

    • Martha says:

David said he was trying to get theater type venues so people could sit down. They were nice but probably expensive and limited his choices. These GA venues are super for the fans! A la Troubadour! It brings out a different crowd too. This was pointed out to him by someone I know; she told him that this is good. He looked at her thinking. The sit down shows are great for Utah where the family from grandma down goes to the shows. Nothing wrong with that. I’m all for GA venues even though I can’t stand long. This last tour made him and his loyal fans happy. And the options increased x 100.

      • Seven7Swans says:

Yes, I’m with you! More Knucklehead venues FTW!!!!11!!

      • kimk says:

oh yes praying πŸ™ for a GA I can go to never been to one oh and a VIP too!! πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

      • Jenny says:

Loved Troubadour but as a short, non-assertive person, I️ wondered if it’d have been a different experience if Patty didn’t save a front spot for me. I’ll go anywhere David plays!

        • pastel says:

Totally understand V. The Kansas City and Minnesota shows were very friendly, no jostling at all. Not like in 2009. I guess it might depend upon the venue and town? And what I also liked is that I could easily move back and see the show from a different vantage point, which I did in KC. But of course seated means no lining up, you can get there just in time and less stress. Very important! Cool David does both.

      • pastel says:

Martha, thanks for this info! In Tuacahn, when the group asked Kari at the lunch why it was taking so long to book venues, she said it was hard to book seated venues. The crowd immediately reacted by saying they would be interested in GA. Kari gave us a look of surprise. GA opens so many more doors and reduces costs. I totally agree not everyone can stand but both venues I was at where there was GA there was table seating available for whomever wanted it. It’s cool David has a combination of both.

  9. kimk says:

encouraged to do so? by who for what reason?
cant say I would want him to be with deseret all about control even that kind.. David being his own man ha well nearly killed me in Nashville. lol best kept secret out there.

    • Martha says:

Agree. People can suggest but as sweet and accommodating as David is, when it comes to his career he makes the decisions. The idea that there is someone making decisions for him is simply ______. He’s happy and we’re getting shows where we can tie his shoelaces, so what’s the beef?

    • Seven7Swans says:

David is his own man? Both Nathan Pacheco and David have a duet with a singer named Madilyn Paige on their albums. Quite the coincidence, don’t you think? They both just independently picked this particular singer to duet with at the same time for both their albums? She was at Nathan’s concert and now she will be at David’s concert as a special guest? Once again, quite the coincidence.

Nope, no one, er, controlling anything here.

      • Martha says:

Gee whiz you’re grumpy. Hope things look up for you.

      • pastel says:

Hey, ML here. David and Nathan share the same management. So yes, there is going to be overlap. Why would that mean anything more that they like good talent? They are certainly very different artists.

  10. kimk says:

yeah well did see that.. it is Utah she is lds.. umm gorgeous too
dunno hope it comes off good. my thoughts would I love for him to have Tippy come here their duet was hot.. they sounded great together!! πŸ™πŸ˜³πŸ’ƒπŸ•ΊπŸ½πŸ˜‰πŸ˜ƒ

lol David is doing IG stories seems they are on their way to Idaho. ha and his sister Jahzeys.. rofl. 🀣😎

    • kimk says:

  13. Miss Vicki DA#2014 says:

  14. Janel aka Nellie says:

Since Alyssa and I are unable to get a ride to Salt Lake for David’s concert we’re going to drive there in my van with faith and a prayer. Please if you’re so inclined, pray that we’ll get there safely and home safely after the concert. It’s only a 35-40 minute drive but my van is getting worse. I can’t take Trax let alone the fast train because I have Meniere’s Disease (inner ear issues). Thanks in advance for those who don’t mind saying a prayer for us.

    • kimk says:

sorry you couldn’t get a ride.. I have Meniere’s have you ever tried seasick patches? soon as I feel the crazy spinning coming on I take decongestants like Sudafed as it seems for me at least it is the fluid like sinus infections etc helps me. for me it is better now it was allergies that caused it I was doing a lot of indoor chemicals etc remodeling my body didn’t like it so stopped now if I have to do anything I do it outside somewhere. God Bless.

  26. Bobanna says:

Goodmorning to all!!! FOD…THANK YOU for the amazing new banner!!! <3

  27. GrammyJ says:

The money in music is now mainly coming from touring and merchandise at concerts. David has been doing well touring in Utah, Idaho and Arizona. I believe that money enables him to tour in small GA venues throughout the US. I’m so glad that David finally decided to sing at general admission venues. I’m also glad he decided to continue on in music when he almost gave it up. His talent and messages in his songs need to be heard IMHO.
