Working Out

– Screen cap IG – David & Dean Kaelin

What does it take to keep that golden voice in shape? PRACTICE – lots and lots of practice! David shared his vocal workout with us on InstaStory – introducing his vocal coach of 13 years, Dean Kaelin.

Our hearts go out to our Archies, family and friends who have been affected by the recent natural disasters. Fires on the West Coast, Hurricane Harvey in Texas, Hurricane Irma in Florida and the devastating earthquake in Mexico. You are all in our thoughts and prayers – stay safe.

My Kind of Therapy

Another fabulous InstaStory  giving us a peek into David’s world – this time, he introduces us to Dean Kaelin, his vocal coach of 13 years – the coach responsible for helping David to continue singing, despite a partially paralyzed vocal cord. If you’ve read Chords of Strength, you may already be familiar with this story.

Now listen as David goes through some vocal exercises – it takes a lot of work to keep that golden voice in perfect form!

Thanks to Joanie/Suttygal for capturing the IG Story on vid to share with everyone!

For those who don’t have Instagram, here’s the vid on You Tube:

David makes a small typo, and in true David form, he goes back and corrects it! Always precise and accurate!

Brady Bills’ Interview

As told to Lindsey Williams

I started playing violin when I was a kid. It was awkward to hold under my chin, so when I was 4 or 5 I practiced with the violin in my lap. After seeing that, my mom decided I should try guitar lessons instead.

My first real paying gig was when I was 8 at the Provo Country Club. I was playing Christmas tunes, and a man dropped $50 in my case. He planted the bug that people could pay me to play.

There’s a small community of musicians in Utah, so everyone pretty much knows everyone. David Archuleta’s music director at the time, Kendra Lowe, called me and asked if I’d be interested in a one-off gig where I would get off the airplane and play one show to see how it goes.

After that, they kept me in the band.

Now I’m the guitarist and music director for David. A music director makes sure the band is tight and translates from the vocalist to the band. Sometimes the singer will say something like, “I want this to sound like an organic heartbeat.” So as a music director you have to translate that to play the bass drum softer on beats two and four or less synthesized.

Working with David is awesome. He’s not faking it. He is that nice, honest and real. He’s a great boss to work with and a great singer. Holy cow — his pitch is insane. I don’t think I’ve played with a singer who is that in-tune all the time. He’s very connected with the music in a physical sense. If he’s dancing you know it’s working out. If he’s not dancing something has got to change.

“I want to sound like a piano on the guitar because the piano is warm, full and in-tune.” — Brady Bills, Guitarist for David Archuleta

Fun Finds

– This great photoshopped pic sure fooled us!!

I’m totally renaming my Orion & Leo playlist OREO! Thanks for the great idea Astrid!

It’s been a great week for ArchuExcitement and as we count down to the release of Postcards in the Sky, we can look forward to pics and vids from the Worcester, MA TOFW event and the Kamas concert – probably the first show to feature live songs from Leo!

Stay tuned next week for lots of amazing David news from Pastel!

Closing this post with continued prayers for everyone affected by the recent natural disasters – you are all in our thoughts – stay safe!

Omar photoshopped that billboard so unfortunately it doesn’t exist. I remember when David was on a big billboard in the Philippines and he had a vlog showing him standing by it.

Ray, I’m sorry that your wife can’t be at home with you, but it sounds
like she’s being well taken care of. I know it must be incredibly difficult
for her & for you. She is lucky to have you <3

  10. GrammyJ says:

Praying for Kimk. Looks like Jacksonville is getting slammed with rain. Hoping their won’t be any damage to her home. We’ve had flooding in the past in my area. It is very destructive and takes years to fully recover. David’s song ” Things are Gonna Get Better” applies.
