A Charity Update
A short post focusing on giving today, and two charities in particular.
As most of you may be aware the Invisible Children Charity is closing its doors by the end of next year. That made me very sad, but it was also in victory in acknowledging that progress has been made in Africa. Here is an article summarizing why it is closing:
The controversial nonprofit group Invisible Children, which produced two influential documentaries that helped heighten awareness of the abduction and use of children as soldiers by the Lord’s Resistance Army in the Ugandan civil conflict, has announced that it will officially close down by the end of 2015.
The organization is most notable for the 30-minute “Kony 2012” documentary, which called for the arrest of LRA leader Joseph Kony and also called for greater U.S. involvement against the LRA. The documentary, which went viral on YouTube when it was published in March of 2012, received over 100 million views in a matter of five days and helped raise more than $30 million for their cause.
The organization’s CEO, Ben Keesey, announced in a recent video statement that the group has had difficulty maintaining funding and it’s no longer viable for the organization to continue operating at its current levels.
“These last few years have been enormously challenging for our organization,” Keesey said. “It’s been incredibly difficult for us to sustain the funding that we need for this cause, for Invisible Children and its current structure.”
Keesey added that due to the decline in funding for the organization, the group had two options: it could either close up its programs on the ground in Africa, or it could close down on its programs in the U.S., which are only designed to drive awareness of the issue. Keesey said that it was more important to keep funding its Africa efforts.

And we all know this charity was the inspiration for the only original on BEGIN., called Broken.
And IC has always has a wonderful connection with FOD and appreciated the support of all the fans of David everywhere in some of their special campaigns. We remember fondly the time David visited their headquarters in San Diego to thank the staff and volunteers there with pizza, and recorded a message for all of us to hear. The video has now been taken down, but it was a lovely message of thanks from David to all of you!
I visited this group in San Diego a few years ago, just after Broken was released. The music department there heard it for the first time and really enjoyed it. Everyone got BEGIN. CDs that day!
And IC posted their last video earlier this week, and summarizes their next steps.
I was always very pleased with the enthusiasm and determination of the staff there, their ability to reach out to fundraise and definitely their appreciation that artists can play a large role in getting the message out, as occurred in The Musician Coalition, of which David was a member.
We thank the people of Invisible Children for their hard work and dedication and wish each of them well on their next endeavors.
I came across the video of a group of boys opening their “Christmas Boxes” from Samaritan’s Purse Charity (link to the Canadian site here) and was overwhelmed with their joy! David’s fans have been very generous over the years in contributing to this charity and putting together boxes to send over. A shot from Holly’s house in 2013:
And here is the vid of those wonderful boys!
A wonderful example of how your generosity makes a difference!
In summary, I just wanted to thank all the David fans for always going above and beyond, for giving that “little bit extra” when asked, because that’s the kind of people you are. Generosity is in your DNA. Celebrating your generous spirit today!

I Need a Silent Night
Winding down to some of the last songs from the Christmas tours to profile.
Two days before Christmas and I think this song from David’s MKOC tour says it all:
