As we look back on our favorite memories of 2012, who can forget that loveable personal assistant (distant cousin of Siri), the irrepressible VANGIE! When it comes to dream jobs, David’s Personal Assistant ranks right up there with being David’s Tour Manager (lucky Kari!) and ummm…. Queen of the Universe.
Many fans wondered how quickly David would learn Tagalog and it didn’t take long before he was belting out Nandito Ako in true OPM style ~ we soon found out his secret weapon was Vangie ~ she helped him to stay on schedule, learn popular Tagalog phrases and gestures and how to enjoy a yummy snack for merienda! Let’s revisit the vids shared by TV5 Philippines – sit back and prepare to LOL – rice cakes anyone?

We first met Vangie as David was in his hotel room getting ready for the day. She’s reciting his schedule in rapid-fire Tagalog when David gently reminds her that he can’t understand a thing she’s saying – which prompts an apology and the hilarious “switching to English-ing mode”.

In this next vid, Vangie gives David a few lessons in communicating Pinoy 101 style – I remember this vid inspired a LOT of screencaps and GIFs – especially “how do you show someone where to go?” I love that this vid ends with FOOD and David asking in flawless Tagalog for some kalamansi limes to go with his pancit – fyi I have a kalamansi lime tree, and they are delish!

Va- from last tread. I’m sure all our birthday cards, christmas cards and letters overwhelmed David. He is very appreciative persons. And Kari said David still want cards , letters. Oh my heavens, Archufandom is such an interesting place right now. I can’t believe the whole “privacy” issue came up again. I just took Kari’s messages (both of them) as a “keep doing what you’re doing with the PO Box and supporting his music” and for those people who did other things, they would know who they are and it’s just a gentle reminder. As far as the Mother’s Day thing, I’ve never heard of it happening before. If that is the case, the mission president must have good reasons that we’re not aware of. I don’t have time to be concerned about what David’s mission president allows or doesn’t allow. And, it’s easy to misinterpret things when you’re not face to face, so maybe that’s not what the Elder meant at all. Who knows.
I like what Kari said about more than one David. Even when he’s not on a mission, he has a private life and a public life and I have no desire to intrude on his private life. I know celebrities give up a certain degree of privacy by default, but I’ve always had the philosophy to not want to know anything that David doesn’t choose to tell us. The Christmas devotional was different because it was a public event that was live streamed/broadcast. I clicked on a few of the blogs from when David was in the MTC just because I was curious about harmless tidbits, but I didn’t search them out. It’s funny that we had such a big to-do over blogs just after David left and there are so few now it doesn’t matter as much anymore.

ok now all this annoying privacy talk has me really wondering~ in kari’s statement where she said we should focus on our own commitments, were those her words? or david’s? hope they are just her words because why on earth would david say that? that doesn’t make any sense. we are all here living our lives far away from him and he supposedly has no access to these websites where we talk about him so how or why would he think we are only focusing on him? and if he is so busy, why would he care what we are doing? wow this is really starting to get confusing and kinda upsetting.
kmb-I agree with what you said…I do think David is the only artist on the planet that could tell his fans “to get a life” and get away with it. (Nicely of course) Im sure he probably said something along the lines of “I hope fans will continue to focus on other areas of their life while I am gone.”

Glitter-Im with you…the only ones that Im aware of that have ever disrespected his privacy were his fellow missionaries at the MTC, it just showed that were human and like us were star struck by having a mega star in their presence. I haven’t heard of one fan hoping a plane and stalking him!! We’re land locked 8,000 miles away and most of us do have a life. We just enjoy sharing a part of that life with other David fans. If thats a sin then shoot me and many others!!

glitter*girl and Candy – I would think that when David says that, he just would mean it as an encouragement for us to follow our own dreams too. It’s not so much “get a life” as it is “live your life to the fullest and follow your dreams.” David has always said stuff like that to us. He knows we have our own lives and just encourages us to get the most out of them. We certainly have a one of a kind relationship with a one of a kind artist.

Regarding David’s statement about fans focusing on their own lives and commitments, don’t forget that he is getting boxes and boxes of letters from people who may be pouring their hearts out to him. I would imagine that if someone is telling you they think about you day and night, and their heart hurts because they miss him so much…it could be a bit disheartening.

Wil-I get that -but also hope that after being gone close to a year, he would be happy to know that he still has fans, especially ones that care deeply. Fans are human and if someone is openly expressing their thoughts to him, Im sure he reads them, says a prayer for the fan and goes on about his day.
I hope that this is the end of the privacy discussion for the remainder of David’s mission. Once April 2014 gets here, our David lives will be back to normal and things will be much easier for us

Moving on to other subjects…
The only other book I want from David is COS 2, which would include NA and aspects of his mission that he feels comfortable sharing with us. I assume the style book does not involve David but you never know.
I LOVE what David did with Climb Every Mountain! It was a song choice for MKOCT that surprised me and I wondered what David would do with it. As always, he blew me away. Instead of being “musical-ish” David’s version is soulful with a bit of a rock feel. I always enjoy reading the thoughts of MCL and Pam and this article was no exception. Thanks to both wonderful ladies for doing this! I hope that one day MCL will review Begin. and/or the Chile Christmas performances.

No matter what Kari says somebody is always going to take it a different way than she meant it, I think she does her best, but for some that is not enough, maybe try to stop analyzing every thing, and put our own spin on things. Didn’t think her message was unclear. JMO

I am so thankful to kari for trying so hard for the fans and david and doing her best and i sometimes think that it must be hard to have every word analyzed. I don’t doubt for a minute that there are people that are sending things to the mission itself or that the love he receives from some fans by mail so often is so effusive that he worries that he is taking too much of those people’s time. We know that david is all about other people and wanting the best for them. I can not say how happy i am that he will be back “next year!” and I really want Kari in the picture- the one person who has always shown great respect and understanding of both david and his fans
I would wager a guess that LadyV isnt going to be talking to Oprah about David…nor would he be the subject of a “Style book”

SB-It made me wonder why tell fans at all about the change in the mailing of stuff to David, none of us would know the difference. Shanny – the wreath is still up. In MN, outside Christmas lights often stay up clear through Jan. It helps warm up the cold…..oh, that sounds ridiculous….not literally, of course. And we typically keep the tree up a few weeks after Christmas, too. but I usually start putting away a few of the other decorations about now….do it gradually.
i leave the lights on my deck all winter cuz like u said bychance, it’s so cold and dreary i need to brighten it up otherwise it does get very depressing.

While I couldn’t sleep last night, I thought about The whole NA experience. I was reminded of the best time of our lives. After the announcement, I must admit , I was feeling low. David doing this mini-series and then TV5 and all the Pinoy Archies making it possible for all of us being a part of it was so exciting. What other fandom across the continents has enjoyed so much from their superstar. 5 wks. plus of pure joy of seeing and hearing David(Josh) in malls and on TV shows. Absolutely a spectacular time in all our lives. Bags under our eyes and all. So many wonderful things to remember. David brings a smile to our faces and makes us so happy.

Then i take it down. Purto Rico, and other places don’t exchange gifts at Christmas, they exchange gifts at Epiphany.

Random thought…one reason I suspect we have so much drama and misunderstanding here in the fanbase sometimes is because people might share a thought/opinion and it might be just a passing thought or a lightly held opinion and then others think it is a strong opinion or that passing thought represnts that person’s overall out look on the matter. For instance…on Kari’s message yesterday…as you would expect, it generated different ideas and some speculation. Then it was assumed by some/many that there was a lot of confusion over the statement, when in reality, it may have been more that most people were ok with it, weren’t really confused, had simply blabbed a few passing thoughts over it and were ready to continue on with business as usual.
