“Crush” was met with positive reviews by many critics.
Chuck Taylor of Billboard praised it for being a suitable match for Archuleta, citing it as a “hummable, age-appropriate midtempo pop ditty for the 17-year-old, showcasing his fine mass-appeal vocal stylings with creamy harmonies and some nice falsetto effects.” He also predicted chart success for the song, saying “‘Crush’ is likely to put its money where its title is on the charts.”[2]
Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly called the song “surprisingly good!” as well as “hip and contemporary.” He stated, “David adroitly walks the line between giving his core fans their fill of vocal runs while showing enough restraint that he won’t automatically alienate non-Idol-loving listeners.”[3]
Blender Magazine also praised the song, giving it three and a half out of five stars and claiming to have “just listened to the thing six times in a row and we’re not terribly angry about spin seven.” They also liked that the song seemed perfectly crafted for radio, saying, “Songs like “Crush” are great because they sound as if the radio immaculately conceived them.”[4]

While Crush continues to thrive in sales of digital copies, the popularity of the official Crush video does, too! Now with views nearing 35.8 million, it’s momentum has not showed any signs of slowing.
Just as David had hoped when the song was released, Crush’s message finds no barriers or boundaries in ages. It’s story is felt, experienced, and lived…it’s timeless! He expressed his feelings in his blog the day after it’s released. Below is an excerpt:

Yesterday, I noticed a number of fans parked in David’s Christmas performance vids ; I was there, too. It’s a favorite place of mine to be irregardless of the present season! Later, as I was reading through the comments, I saw a fun wishlist from Kalei! She was busy dreaming up a “wish-tracklist” for additional David Archuleta Christmas music! I loved her list and her doing it seemed perfectly logical to me. It’s not because we’d ever expect to receive anything else from David. Goodness, he’s already left WAY MORE for the fans in his absence than I ever could have imagined. It’s simply a recognition that no one compares to him. period. Rapport said it briefly and pretty perfectly with a comment:

I’m excited to hear David’s remix of Rainbow and the music video, but am pretty bummed there doesn’t seem to be any new tracks.

I am seriously in love with WOW. They sure have worked hard to get David’s music for those of us in the US. I don’t even care that there are no new songs. I will pay that amount for the remix and the music videos. I still am amazed that David had time to record the songs on the Forevermore album. Can’t imagine how he would have had time to record any more and still get back home to record the Begin album. He is just a very hard working young man.

Janel-Thank you for clarifying that for me. When I first read today’s post, I was like What???? I thought Crush reached 2 million downloads a long time ago. But the fact that it is official now makes me feel so very happy for David that people are buying his music!
Yes, I’m disappointed there are no new song tracks except for a remix of Rainbow. But I’m certainly not upset with David about that. He’s been so terrific and given us so much already!! Usually when an artist releases an expanded edition of an album, a few new tracks are usually included, so I was a bit surprised.

Christmas Dreaming……Like I’ve said before, no one sings Christmas music better than David! There are so many fabulous videos from David’s X-mas concerts to watch, that to me, they are a gift in themselves!!! So if David didn’t record any other holiday music for us, that’s perfectly fine. Crush will forevermore be known as David’s signature song. Such teen angst and yearning when love first bubbles to the surface. David always makes you “feel” that feeling.
And, one pet peeve here. How come so many people don’t know how to spell David’s last name correctly? Or even check to see if it’s spelled correctly? Not us, that’s for sure. We know it’s one “t”, not two!

Martha – thanks for posting that Examiner article! Nice that they mention CFTH as one of the top sellers (from Season 8 lolol) but they need to do a little more updating. The most recent sales number I have for CFTH show it at 258K as of September of this year. I’m sure they probably don’t pay to have access to those full SoundScan numbers though.

Thanks for the great new post Joanie – and the handsome pics of Mr Archuleta – those eyes.
Twas funny reading the blog notes from when Crush was released. As many of you know, I didn’t know about david in the beginning. I discovered his AI vids on youtube and so when I first heard Crush on youtube during the initial budding of my ODD, I remember leaving a comment about Crush.being a bad.choice for a song because it only really appeals to a teeny-bopper demographic. So funny to look back on that comment now as a fully fledged ODDer and now that I know more about the amazing success and popularity of that song.
Although in all honesty, Crush has never been a favourite of mine at all (despite catching myself getting excited when it starts playing in my car sometimes – whats up with the double standard there Shanny? – probably some sort of subconscious bias against that ‘teeny-bopper’ song?
) and there is a part of me that wonders if Crush was and is successful mostly because people associate it so closely with AI and how impressed they were with our guy and so it brings out ‘supportive’ feelings towards David and people project that onto Crush?
So there’s my psychoanalytical blab for the day lol.
Either way, i’m glad Crush has been received so well and has brought recognition for david. Wouldn’t want it any other way.

I was just watching some of the Pandora skating special that David was on last November. I’ve kept it saved on my DVR all this time. It’s sooooo worth watching over and over again! My hope is that someday when David decides to record another Christmas album, he will include a studio version of Northern Lights with M.S. Also This Christmas and Chestnuts would be sooooo wonderful!!!!

On the top of Crush, I love the song but its not my favorite from the first album. It is a great song though!

A recording usually consists of several tracks – the instruments, the vocals, the back-up vocals, etc… layed over one on top of another to complete the arrangement.
For example, a piece of music that has four parts: a vocal part, a drum part, a bass part, and a piano part. If you remove one of the parts, you have a three-part arrangement. 4 parts minus one part equals three parts.
Accompaniment tracks are called “minus one” tracks because one part has been subtracted. In this case, it is called “minus-one” because the vocal tracks of the recordings had been taken out.
So it is a literal reference to the process – subtracting one track.
It’s “music minus one” because it needs “one more” to become complete. When you play along with it you are the “one” that completes it.
sarah-That sounds like a plan!!! Another one is an R&B album, but I’m sure someone already put that on our Bucket List! David has to go back to his roots someday, and that’s in R&B/Soul!

Since Shanny mentioned it, I have to confess that I never really loved Crush, either. lol. When I would call to request it, I remember thinking “Uggh. This DJ is gonna say ‘Do you loooove this song? Do youuuu have a Crush on Archie?’ David, I’m doing this for you, and ONLY you.” lol.
i remember calling and requesting ALTNOY many many times and they never played it
would like to know why. seems like after crush they refused to play any more of david’s songs

i bought a blue wig so i could attempt to be katy perry for halloween. one of my good friends has double dared me to wear the wig to the grocery store on halloween afternoon lol! what makes this super scary is that i used to work there many years ago and everyone knows me.

tami lyn I agree I requested ALTNOY on my radio station and they never would play it either. They would never play any of his songs after Crush, I don’t believe it was becaus it was too slow, they played other slow songs on the radio, there was something about David that they didn’t like, don’t as me why, I don’t have a clue.
I think the numbers on EMH MV are stuck they haven’t changed in a few days 168,864,
I wonder how you get them to correct it, if they do will they count all the ones that were played that they didn’t count?

tami lyn-I think maybe they do, even Ryan Seacrest I requested David’s ALTNOY on his program and he wouldn’t play it either, when I think that David appeared on some of the Charity things with him, which he didn’t have to do, but being the nice person David is he would do anything for anybody. I think DJs get some kind of kick back, maybe not money, but other things. I don’t believe they have changed from when I was a teenager the DJs got kickbacks for playing artists music then. I believe they still do JMO

TBH, I just don’t get the appeal of this song and the accompanying dance! It’s like it tries too hard to be catchy? funny? I know that it’s meant to be a cariacature of an affluent neighborhood in S. Korea but…idk. Maybe I’d be more impressed if I looked at some of PSY’s other music, since he’s been around a while.
