Continuing to hunker down
Hurricane Sandy was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone Monday evening, but it’s still carrying hurricane-strength winds as it surges toward the U.S. eastern seaboard.
The storm system’s pounding rain and strong winds are threatening a 1,300-kilometre region and up to 50 million people in several states.
Schools, businesses, transit systems and some highways were closed from Washington, D.C. to Boston. Train service across the U.S. Northeast was halted through Tuesday and about 10,000 domestic and international flights were cancelled. Over the weekend, tens of thousands of people were ordered to leave coastal areas of New York, New Jersey and Delaware, while all 12 of Atlantic City’s casinos were closed. The New York Stock Exchange also suspended operations Monday, while the United Nations shut down.
The storm has been extremely disruptive along the eastern coastline, washing out beaches, boardwalks and coastal buildings in its way. This storm is said to be more dangerous than Hurricane Irene hitting the same area only 14 months ago.

We were blessed as Sandy made its way into shore last night. Our power stayed on and the trees remained standing. The wind was crazy all day and part of the night. I have never experienced wind like that, so constant, no let up until about 1:oo am. Like I said, here in Middle River, Maryland were blessed and my heart goes out to the ones without power this morning. It’s still raining but the wind has died down. Everyone take care.

Has anyone heard from Candy? I’m thinking she probably has no power. My daughter in Arlington MA has power, but many of her neighbors do not. Trees are down all over, but their trees are all intact. No school again for her boys. I have been watching the news and the damage is frightening. So sad for all the people involved and all of the losses.

I recall someone saying they like David’s voice but don’t like his music. I thought at the time, I wonder what music they don’t like, The songs on Idol, the original album, the second album, Christmas music, Forevermore album, Begin. Hmmmmmmmm. It could be that that person who doesn’t like Davids music is more into hard rock or rap music, you never know. There is music for everyone. Mine is pop and David music. I thought he said that his easy listening music was for this stage of his life. Meaning his mission. I think he will rawk it when he comes back.
Could very well be those people are more into country, rock or hard rock, r&b, etc. David has a very smooth contemporary pop feel to his music. Even most of the songs he covered are in that genre. Not all, but most. But personally, I don’t get it either, how anyone can not be just blown away by his voice and fall in love with it & him.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their prayers for all of us who live in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast! The storm was particularly devastating to the Jersey Shore and parts of NY. I lost my power last night and they told us we should expect it to be out for about 7 days but was very fortunate to get it back this afternoon. You never fully appreciate what you have until you no longer have it. I am just now able to see the pics of the devastation that took place at the Jersey Shore. I have spent most of my summers there and it breaks my heart to see what has occurred. There has been incredible destruction. Please continue to pray for everyone who live in the affected areas as they must now begin to rebuild.

Hey guys checking in again. Everything’s over pretty much here in MA. We just had brief big gust of wind and some rain. It’s still a little breezy but we still got power where I live and thank the Lord we’re ok. That was TOO CLOSE. Back in school today and it was still a bit windy; was nervous on the drive home, but overall I’m alright thank God

I can understand the comment from the blog post yesterday about liking David’s voice but not his music. I think it has something to do with his music choices? Not “cool” enough or doesn’t have a feel that is current enough? I’ve felt that way myself. Also, the person that made the comment is young and most young people are into a different sound and style than whatDavid has chosen. I think, as we’ve said before, the hope is that when he returns he will connect with the “right” writers, producers, etc. that appeals to young people and the mainstream. That’s my take on it anyway.
kimk–I’m most excited for the “salsafied” part…..haha!
ksf–Hi! I believe he could be “cool and current” (in his own way or style) without sacrificing the values he believes in…..just have to have that kind of balance….and like you said, connecting with the “right peeps”.

love David’s voice he is a sweetheart of a guy.. not sure if the type of music he does is hip or cool but that is ok by me. I am an older fan.
I do like what is on the radio though as well as a lot of other great artists.
if David wishes to when he gets back he can make music a bit more ‘cool with an edge’ if he wishes. reason I say that is he usually likes the kind of music that is cool.

Re: David’s music choices, I think it’s funny that someone can say they don’t like his music. He doesn’t even HAVE a musical style yet, really. lol. It’s been a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I remember a year or so ago on mj’s blog, that was the big complaint of non-fans: “He isn’t defined; he’s all over the place, he doesn’t know who he is or what direction to take.” So….some peeps don’t like that he doesn’t have a sound, and others don’t like whatever sound they think he has. lol. Poor guy can’t win for losing. haha. I do agree, though, that his taste might not be edgy enough for some.
Power is back, plugged in my phone and laptop, ran water, and turned the heat on. Lost a few trees but no damage. But my plight for 24 hours with no power is nothing compared to the damage, destruction and devastation shore towns have experienced. My heart aches for all affected. Sadly, The Jersey shore will be forever changed.

Thanks FOD family for all of your prayers on behalf of those living in the path of Sandy. Received word this morning from our son in northern VA that he is ok and he has power and then received an email from our grandson’s mission president (and an email from someone in our grandson’s congregation) that Elder Barker and all of the missionaries in the Pennsylvania Philadelphia Mission are safe and accounted for. Grandson is serving in South Jersey, so we were really concerned when we saw the devastation there. Thanks, again, for your continued prayers for all.
CANDY – glad to hear you are alright. Been watching the news. The devastation is so sad. But NY will triumph. May take some time but, people are resilient. God is there.

I love that David sings a bit of this and a bit of that! It’s a sign of a great artist!! I just don’t get the music industry’s insistence to put artists in a little box, especially someone with enormous talent, such as David. It really just doesn’t make any sense to me. When David was on AI, some said he always sounded the same, and now when he sings so many different styles, which makes him so facinating, people complain! Ughh!!! Poor David!
So glad to hear that you are OK, Candy, and that your loved ones are OK, Cheryl. I just can’t believe the devastation that exists in NY and Jersey. Just breaks your heart to think of the losses.

As far as David’s song / music choices to date. Why not try different types, different producers, different co-writers? I honestly believe he knew 2 years ago he was going on a mission, so why not take that opportunity to “seek out” future co-workers, as he also figures out what he wants to target when he returns.
Of course as musically inclined as he is, something also tells me he knew 5 years ago what direction he wanted to do when he turns 24. He just did not know who he wanted to go along with him on the journey.

kimk-Maybe your are right. David isn’t going to be able to please everyone all the time, and of course he realizes that. As long as David loves and is at peace with the directions he chooses for himself, and he has fans who appreciate him and his music, that’s what really matters! David has certainly had his struggles, but he still has done very well for himself, and he has a fanbase that is a force to be reckoned with!!!

Hi everyone, Haven’t been here in awhile. Life has been crazy busy with work and family but I always try and find time in my day to listen to David. I was thinking of all my fellow east coasters here during the storm. So glad to read that everyone is OK. The devastation in NYC and NJ is unreal. I lost power here in MA for about 10 hours and a tree fell in my yard but I’m lucky! The wind howled for hours and I never thought it would end! Still praying for all those who lost homes,etc. Can’t wait to break out CFTH soon!!! I’ll drop back in again soon! Miss David!!!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! For me things ae back to normal, but so many are just beginning the cleanup and rebuilding needed after Sandy! My thoughts and prayers to all.

ksf-I understand completely-David has this amazing mind boggling voice and there have been times when he picked a song (Elevator) that I cringed. Dont throw things peeps, it didnt have anything to do with my love/support…just made me go WTH…TOSOD is my least fav album…I love his falsetto but song after song of strained high notes wasnt cutting it for me. But I just found other songs of his that I did love and listened to them. Different strokes….
Its unrealistic for someone to think that even a hardcore fan is going to fall over everytime their artist so much as opens their mouth…they have to win me over with a great song before I come on board as a fan. And continue to do so with other good songs. Now BEGIN…is a whole nother story…I love just about every song on it!
Candy – exactly. MANY love his voice but song choice is just as, if not MORE important than voice sometimes, especially when it comes to longevity, as kimk said. I can adore someone’s voice but if I don’t like their songs then I won’t buy their music. It’s mote about the quality of the songs rather than the style. If I’m a pop fan but its a crappy pop song I’m still not going to buy it. The same goes with ANY style of music an artist does. That’s how most people think. That missionary blogger is a good example of this.

Candy – YES! So true. David had me at Imagine but it doesn’t mean that I have to swear my undying love and allegiance to every single song. I’ve stuck around because I like who he seems to be as a person and because I can’t wait to see him reach the amazing potential that he has. But, I can only count on a couple of fingers the number of artists who I genuinely love EVERYTHING that comes out of their mouth. David’s voice is clearly out of this world and there’s no question that he is someone of integrity but its okay to say that for the general public, ESPECIALLY people his own age, his songs may not have the needed appeal.
I thought the Gorilla costume is from recent picture from Chile lol, but it’s cute.
I like David to explore different kind of songwriter and musician( new one) to help him out to different kind of styles of music. I know David is more comfortable with his friends songwriter, but it will not be hurt to try out different songwriter and musician he never been work with.
I also agree on the high notes…I think that’s why my favorite album is his first one. There was just so much more variety in his voice. I like the songs on BEGIN. as well that aren’t so high pitched. DGU, for instance.

Candy- I see the point, just not a fan of some particular songs. That’s why I think he should also try other songwriter to work with, so he can see which kind of style of music will click to the masses. In the Philippines and other asian countries, I don’t think he will have problem, because everything David music whether it doesn’t sounds good in other people opinions, Asian fans still love his music, because from what I observed not only his talent fans want but more of his respectful personality. Because everyone know David is humble and kind.

Candy – I think a lot of people have felt guilty at times for not liking certain songs or albums but I think it’s healthy to be honest about what appeals to you and what doesn’t. Tbh, it always annoys me that when anyone says that maybe they don’t like a particular song or that non fans don’t like David’s music, that it turns into, “I will always love David til the day I die and I love everything he has sung or will ever sing and I pledge my allegiance forever and ever and ever.” lol. That’s amazing that you feel that way but please don’t feel like you have to “defend” David. No one is bashing him…it’s just a discussion. Maybe we should just assume that everyone here feels that same “love” (because they do or they wouldn’t be here) but then let’s move on from there and have real and thoughtful dialogue instead of the pat response.

Jhen 1D is ok for what they are.. they remind me of my young days when I loved the Beatles, Donny Osmond, David Cassidy, etc..
they have a new song out that a lot of young David fans are liking because it is a little more real. it is written by Ed Sheeran and he is pretty good. he has a song on the radio now called The A Team. I like him he has a Jason Mraz, John Mayer thing going and hope David will cover some when he gets back.
as for David.. well his MKOP is not that deep, TMH.. or Elevator for that matter. I do think a lot of David’s younger fans see him as a young cute boy singer.
anyway this is 1D’s new song and it really isn’t too bad. great message song.

kimk – agree. Really like that song…acoustic songs are always amazing for artists that can actually sing. lol. Love the kind of raspiness of the guy who sings the first verse. I cant TOTALLY hear David singing this type of song. Let’s pray that David hooks up with Ed Sheeran and that he lets him work his magic.

I think its a similar feeling to MKOP but more direct. It’s sweet and what someone would actually say in a relationship.

also i feel like an a** for my comment a few months ago when i said david was an average songwriter! trying and failing to write one simple melody has shown me how difficult songwriting is and so now i appreciate all of david’s original songs so much more.

I see that the convo is on liking all songs on cds. Even before i started following David, i very seldom liked all the songs on a certain album, so i would skip over them. For sure Davids first album was the one that i played all the way through because i loved every song. Although i love to hear David sing, i still play all his cds all the way through, but i favor some songs more then others. I love all his xmas songs. It was nice of David to plan ahead for us even on Holloween, Thank you David. Maybe he also has something for is at Xmas time.
