There are certain characteristics, or sayings, or ways of acting that define David, so much so that we have been calling them David-ism for, I’d say, years. At least four of them! But lo-and-behold, someone has provided another to the Urban Dictionary to “officialize”.
Last week we reported on “Archies”. There is also a definition of “Archangels”
Today: THE HUNKERDOWN
I always thought FOD-ers coined this phrase, but regardless, it can now be found below:
Defined as: The act of bending over and singing a long extended powerful note in a song.
The singer David Archuleta is known for giving his all in live concert settings and doing the “hunkerdown” is a common occurrence as he belts out a long, gorgeous (sometime high) note.
Shall we define “the hunkerdown” in pictures? Yes, we shall! A recent hunkerdown below:

I have been busy but aware of what’s going on in David land. Thanks for all the goodies you guys have constantly provided here.
The lucky Chilean folks had a mini concert that combined pop/hymn/dance/boxing etc. Wowza!!! Also I am glad he can still sing Silent Night in this coming Christmas at the next devotional concert.
Went to Walmart to check out his CDs and someone kept putting his CD behind Christina Aguilera, so a little war was going on bw that person and me. Finally, I gave up, so I just bought the last BEGIN. lol. Hope they order more CDs in the store.
Martha, thanks for the missionary blog. David is so humble and I love that he develops friendship with other missionaries and people there. I am sure he would make the best time of life while he’s there.

I LOVE the hunkerdown post. I still remember the first time I saw him do that. It was on GCT dvd (the same time I was struck by Archulightning), and I thought..how does he do that? Doesn’t that make it harder to sing those high notes?! But, no!! , he hit them perfectly. David is the master of the hunkerdown!!
IaM, (is it ok if I shorten your name to that?) I’m sure there are others who could give you a full and creative description of ODD. But….Obsessive David Disorder is what we all have…..can’t get him out of our heads!

by chance–I think Masterclass Lady mentioned one time that the hunkerdown he does actually relaxes his knee and this enables him to reach those high notes…..though she didn’t really elaborate how that works….LOL

Loved those links–believe me, I qualify. I have only seen David once live and I went with my husband. When Zero Gravity started and I leaped up and started jumping, he gave me that side-wise look that said “Do I know you?” and then, “You DO remember that you are 58 and have bad knees right?” I didn’t care though. The pain was worth it!

I’ve not said much about this whole to know/not to know mission controversy just because I’ve always subscribed to the philosophy that the less you say, the smarter you seem
Today, though, I have something I want to say.
I am an adult and, by the grace of God, I was born in a country that guarantees my right to freely discuss whatever crosses my little mind. I do not require nor desire the permission of ANYONE to talk about a public performance (or a private one, for that matter). I understand that FOD is a moderated forum and I have tried to respect the wishes of the mods to keep mission details behind links so that only those who want to know can find out. However, I take exception to another fan feeling they need to ask for clearance for the entire fanbase to discuss something elsewhere. If you want to ask for yourself, go right ahead. See what kind of response you get. I’ll thank you to keep me out of it.
As for the performance being “private” because tickets were required, really??

Mostly I’m just upset at people feeling the need to act as if they control others. This is not grade school and neither Kari nor David are my hall monitor so don’t feel the need to ask their permission for me. I think everyone should do what they feel is right for themselves and not feel the need to decide for others. I’ll take care of me.
Personally I don’t think Kari or David are losing sleep at night worrying about what tiny details fans might be talking about now. I’m sure they have way more important things to focus on.

I wish I could relay a story, but its not mine to tell. Suffice to say that members of David’s family have indicated they are happy and proud to look at some of the pictures and have indicated to those who oppose the posting of pictures, that its not up to them to give approval. Hope I haven’t said too much or spoken out of line.
That’s right! To whom it may concern: If you don’t want to see it, don’t read it, don’t pay attention to it…or hide under a big rock until #DA2014 if you want!
I’m gonna be here enjoying what I can enjoy until FOD officially bans me….in writing!
I might be stepping in it again, but (and this is just my opinion…what feels right for me, everyone has to decide that for themselves), but was thinking Sat. night that Gladys is like a little blessing. David doesn’t want to be worrying about his career right now or be too much in the spotlight career wise while on his mission, i.e. putting out videos, pics, official publicity to fans about concerts, etc. ….it would all detract from his purpose now. But we his fans still care about him, still want to know how he is. I think, as someone here has said before, that there is a master plan….and we his fans are part of that plan. So how nice to have someone like sweet Gladys to tell us of her experiences…Gladys or Gissele can help us know how he is without David having to worry about it. I guess I also feel like there is a big difference between David’s day to day mission and a concert for four hundred people. Following him around, taking pics all the time would be considered an invasion of privacy….but a concert doesn’t feel like that to me. I can see how David would ask there be no vids or pics because he does not want to be promoting himself right now, or even appear to be doing that. The good feeling that was here after Gladys shared her experience says to me that this is OK…..at least for me…….again, just my opinion…what works for me….no tomatoes please. I think this is the best possible way for it all to work while he is gone. Keeping fans happy and David happy…..and I do think he is happy. Oh too long winded, and rambly and redundant , sorry.

Thanks for today’s post, Pastel. I love that you showcased David’s hunkerdowns! What a neat idea! I remember a while back when a reader of Masterclass Lady mentioned that he/she noticed that when David was hitting a more difficult note, or high note, David would do this, but most everyone else would look up to the ceiling. Masterclass Lady responded it was because David know’s what he’s doing, and that’s partly why she loves him so!! I’ve never forgotten her saying that!

I certainly wasn’t trying to be a downer to anyone. I just have a pet peeve when one or a few people present themselves to speak for the group or even “many”of the group. My favorite teacher always said, stick to what you know. You know yourself not everyone else.

anita-I too remember masterclass lady taking about the hunkerdown and why and how David used it. I think I recall her saying he used it to fore air out of the diaphram to carry long notes… or something close to that. The Hunkerdown is a beautiful thing…first time I saw one was during Stand BY Me on the AI tour, I was like Lordy what is this new beast being unleashed on us poor unsuspecting fans…little did I know it would be the beginning of many beasts he would unleash!

@JoyYap it was D’s idea because our driver Sherwin had a remix of Rainbow that even @jaydurias had never heard that we would have Sherwin play over and over again when we were in the van. I would say it was our “theme song” So after talking to Jay, David recorded a different version that has a little faster speed to it and then Jay worked his magic. Not knowing what we would do with it one day.

Sometimes my two cents gets bottled up inside the coin hole of my piggy bank, but they are raring to get out at this point so here it goes.
I respect the wishes of FOD to include only links and be careful what we talk about here. I know we talked about certain goings-on in Chile Saturday night but I really think that was something OK to talk about and I don’t think much moderation took place because of it.
However, that tweet is going to far. I think the tweeter not only was trying to get Kari to repremand the fanbase for info on Saturday night, but also to get Kari to say something to agree with her side and the side of her cohorts whom I believe are a minority voice (and not “many” or a “majority” as is claimed by some).
My belief as to why Kari did not answer her or any other fans about Saturday night is I believe (not speaking for her just a feeling) that she might be neutral on the subject. She doesn’t want to alienate certain fans over others and open up a can of worms she can’t close back up again. Pandora’s box will stay shut.
I believe FOD, and many other fan sites, and FB fan groups help to keep the home fires burning for David. Keep hold onto his precious fan base for when he returns. If news of big to-do’s in Chile are given to us by Chileans who attend, it just helps add kindling to the fire and keep us around. I’m betting Kari realizes this. Not answering tells her everything she needs to know. Hmmm…..mind readers in the fan base now?

It looks like Susan has terrible stage fright or not feeling well, but Donny was so kind, there for her & supportive. Donny sounded great, Susan sounded ok some of the song & spectacular in other parts, their voices dont blend so well, but it was great
not to change the subject but, I was reading comments and all of a sudden my house started shaking & felt vibration under my feet, come to find out there was a 4.6 earth quake in Maine, and we felt it in a little town in MA. was scarey, never felt one before. josie – the owners of my daughter’s karate studio used to sell those and had them at the studio often. they are so cute! but so fast. hard to catch. kinda like my chinchilla except that my chinchilla LOVES treats so it’s not hard to get him in his cage after a few hours of playtime. all i have to do is give him part of a noodle.

Hey supergrand! I dont think they had the mic’s set right for Donny & Susan. Susan was good one minute, hit some great notes, then it wasnt so good. Like I said in my previous comment, I think she had major stage fright or she was sick, Donny seemed very concerned about her, she reached out her hand to him & you could hear him say at the end, “you did it” & kissed her on the side of the head. Something was going on, not sure what. If stage frieght, Donny knows how it feels, he had it really bad, awhile back.
When is the trending?. Did they say? Hope not fri, I have my grandsons football gamee.

Beth, i believe that Susan Boyle has had a bad time adjusting to fame. She’s had a breakdowns because of it. I feel bad for her. She has a beautiful voice. Thank Goodness Donny was the one singing with her. He knew how to handle it.

I also noticed with David that sometimes he’ll just bend forward without bending his knees when singing. I wonder if that has the same affect. When he sang “Oh Holy Night” at Club Nokia during the MKOC tour he just bent over without bending his knees. Well, I better get back to the Pres. Debate, so maybe I’ll be back a little later.
Candy, remember, when David went to talk to all of those labels after jive, didnt he get like 5 or 6 offers? I just think he had to go on the mission first, otherwise he would’ve regreted it. People in the music industry are well aware of David, his talent, his character, his heart, how he treats people, he’s a multi-talented, multi-faceted human being. The sky’s the limit, where David is concerned.

@Rosaliah2 That is what is great about social media these days. I will be the first to tweet if I saw for example, Anderson Cooper across the street while having some PinkBerry…wait I did that! It’s just how far you might take it from there that might make a difference. Of course no one wants you to forget about him. We have to many things planned for the future. This is why he worked so hard, even before he made his announcement, to leave things for you to celebrate and discuss while he is away. I do not know what other artist would do that in a “hiatus”. I really hope that all made sense
@Rosaliah2 I know for some it’s hard not getting his frequent updates like you were all used to receiving in the past, and this might bring some to “search” for things. If you feel this is the right thing for you to do, then do it. If not, don’t! Everyone ultimately has to decide that for themselves. I don’t think anyone said not to talk about him while he is on this “adventure” as he calls it. If a member of the church or someone happens to be there from the area and is at an activity that the church is putting on or saw him somewhere I think it is great they might tweet about it!

@rosaliah2 Right now this is something he feels is not right for him to do. If he ever changes his mind and wants to blog and tell you more I will be there to do that for him, but right now this is still “his time” that he needs and which he requested.The event this past Saturday was a youth activity event for the church and featured missionaries, one of which was Elder Archuleta. This time away remains his, the missionaries, and the people they are reaching out to in that area.

I like Kari’s tweets. She didn’t come out and say how she interpreted David’s blog, she just said what he said didn’t change, but people will interpret it differently. She did a good job appeasing to all sides. Making us feel OK for sharing info but knowing we’re not invading his privacy, we’re not stalking him and taking pictures in the bushes. We aren’t flying out to the next continent to try and get into his concerts.

I am so glad Kari responded. She knows all sides love David and one doesn’t need to be telling the other what to do. None of us are in Chile so we can’t stalk and invade his mission. And those who are there have every right to relay what they’ve seen if they wish to do so.
Kimk, LOL, no kidding. I was even too poor to fly to AZ last year, only could because I had frequent flier miles on my Amex. Still have one flight left. Using it for my 30 year HS reunion, next year to AZ again.

I think Kari explained very well also, I never thought there was anything wrong with getting news of David from people who were lucky enough to see and talk to him. It’s nice to know he is doing well, and like Linda said that he still gets to sing and perform, it makes me happy to know that. He worked so hard to make sure us fans are well taken care of and I love him even more for that, we are lucky fans indeed. LINDA – re the kiss or I should say the non-kiss in NA
that was David’s preference and decision.
It would have been perfectly acceptable for Josh to kiss either Anya or Holly and the way I understand it, the original script called for one.
The best that would have been hoped for was a kiss on a cheek or forehead but given David’s circumstances (going on a mission, never have kissed publicly, etc..) that I think was a hard limit for him as an actor and as a person.
Also we have to understand that if David has indeed not kissed anyone, I don’t think he is the kind of person who would waste his 1st time on the celluloid screen.

Linda- It’s not prohibited to kiss on screen in the Philippines TV series, a lot of Philippines actor and actresses doing kissing scene but mild one on TV, but since Jasmine and Eula still a minor, I think it could probably better no kissing scene on TV, only hug.
Linda- David doesn’t want kissing scene, the director and scriptwriter respect David decision and want. They know from the start what David can’t do.
Jay Durias is a genius musician, I’m sure remix of Rainbow will be oh sooo good! Can’t wait for Rainbow MV, anytime soon. Awww…. it’s David idea of remix of Rainbow. So David like to dance in faster music lol
Kari did a good job. Well, I think there is nothing wrong to get some information about David in Chile, just don’t stalk him when he is doing his mission of sharing gospel or getting some pictures during his services to Christ . If it was a devotional concert or show, I don’t think it is wrong to get some information.

@JoyYap it was D’s idea because our driver Sherwin had a remix of Rainbow that even @jaydurias had never heard that we would have Sherwin play over and over again when we were in the van. I would say it was our “theme song” So after talking to Jay, David recorded a different version that has a little faster speed to it and then Jay worked his magic. Not knowing what we would do with it one day.

Enjoyed getting the recap of the debates from last night…both the Presidential and the one in DavidLand. Whatever. Personally I don’t care much about the latter but I must admit I’m tired of hearing about it. It’s all pretty trivial, imo. It just emphasizes that moderation is so critical and when you don’t have it it’s easy to sweat the things that have no bearing in reality. Waaaaay too much energy and time spent on someone else’s life. I’m kicking ODD to the curb and focusing on the things that actually matter, like real life. Lol. I believe that’s what David’s doing.

Hi cq! I should clarify. It is fun and I do have a real life that is very full as well but as far as ‘kicking ODD to the curb’ — the primary reason I come to this site is not really because I’m a fan of David. Obviously I am (and always will be) but I mostly come to chit chat and hang out with the girls, and Ray. Lol. That won’t change but I will be dialing down the emotional aspect where David is concerned. I feel like my thoughts and attention have a tendency to be focused on David far too often. I’m not physically sitting in front of my computer all day, but I’m constantly on my phone as I’m going through my day. I want to be a “normal” (LOL) fan…In other words, I don’t want Ray to have to turn the hose on me or issue me a straight jacket or admit me to the Archuhospital. So, I will still visit and chat because I love the people but not so often. Am I making sense? I hope so but I’m not sure. A bit tired this morning.

I feel out of the loop lately on what’s been happening in Davidland. Been so busy with real life but I had a chance just now to read up-thread at the comments. Not to beat a dead horse….but seriously, why do some people feel the need to ask Kari if it is alright if the fans talk about the concert on Saturday night? Now we must ask permission? I also can’t believe some fans weren’t sure if they could listen to the “leaked” song “Don’t Run Away”. I think people are taking this “respect David’s mission” a little too far, imo. How is talking about a mission concert not respecting David? Sorry but I just don’t get it….and probably never will. I for one am grateful for any news or pics of David. This was a public event and people in attendance respected the wishes of the mission organizers not to take photos or videos. Did someone at the event ask the audience not to speak about the event? Of course not!! I also find it odd that people who talk about “respecting David and his mission” were in the chat on Saturday night taking in every last word from Gladys! Hmmmm things that make you wonder!
Sorry for the rant….but I have always respected David and will continue to do so but I will not feel one ounce of guilt for reading a missionary blog or talking about his appearance in a public event. I just wish that some “fans” would stop putting a guilt trip on the ones who choose to do so.
