Elysian’s Northern Cali Archies Simply Thai-rrific Recap!

Earlier this week, Pastel shared some of Robin’s pics from the recent Simply Thai-rrific No Cali Archies get-together at Simply Thai. The decorations, T’s, goodie bags, and cake were all unbelievably creative!!
Today, Elysian (Lyn) is sharing the get-together recap with us! You will feel as though you were sitting in Simply Thai with the rest of the group!

Thank you so much for your “Autumn Greetings” basket! I have to say I get such a thrill peeking at the different goodies you tuck into the basket (it’s a cornucopia of wonderful surprises!) The handmade teddy bears are exquisite! They are always a HUGE HIT with the patients! It’s so amazing what a simple thing like play doh, a CD, t-shirt or book can do to cheer up a patient! I know I can’t adequately convey the joy that your baskets bring to the patients, but please take my word for it! YOU and your generous group of donors are SO APPRECIATED here at Children’s!
Thank you for always remembering the children here, thank you for all the thought and time you put into each basket and thank you for taking time out of your day to bring it over to the hospital. ~Elysian’s No Cal BEGIN. Celebration Recap!
HOLY GUACAMOLE!!!!!!!!! The Northern California Archies have done it again and pulled off yet another SUPERFANTABULOUSEXTRAORDINARILY WONDERFUL fan gathering which occurred on Sunday at Simply Thai restaurant in Newark, California. Surprisingly, this Simply Thai is not affiliated with David’s Simply Thai in Utah, but what better place to hold a Archie fan get together? (Thanks for the great suggestion Neil!)
Those of you who have been following the on-going exploits of the Nor-Cal Archies may recall that our first ever meet-up occurred last June when we all congregated in order meet each other for the first time, and to welcome the lovely Lorma of Archuleta Phillipines who was visiting the area. I had such an incredible time at the first event that I could not imagine how it could ever be topped, but Kalena and Robin, the masterminds behind this latest extravaganza, pulled off the unimaginable, and put together a fan luncheon to celebrate the release of BEGIN., that raised the bar even higher in terms of its sheer AWESOMENESS!!!
It all began when Robin floated the idea of another fan get together on Twitter. Kalena volunteered to make the arrangements, and Nancy e-mailed Kalena the list of the Nor-Cal Archies so that Kalena could e-mail them to see who was interested. To ensure that we reached as many Nor-Cal Archies as possible, Nancy took the initiative and reached out to those Archies on Twitter, asking them to email Kalena directly so that she could include them in the details of the next meet-up. In short order, a date and time were set, and 8 of the Nor-Cal Archies confirmed, along with two newbies, Theresa and Alan. Theresa has been a David fan since AI, whereas Alan is a newly minted fan, becoming one after watching Nanditio Ako. (Welcome Theresa and Alan!!) Unfortunately, Janey (happy belated birthday!), Jeanne, Monica, Doreen, Heather, and Juliet were unable to make this event, but we hope to see them next time. (We missed you guys!)
Once it was a go, Kalena and Robin swung into party planning high gear and started coming up with AMAZING ideas to carry the theme of BEGIN. Robin generously decided to gift all of the attendees with a BEAUTEMOUS T-shirt she designed using the graphic shared with her by David Archuleta Vietnam (DAVN), which depicts the silhouette of David standing in the woods (one of the pictures in the CD’s booklet). She even made “his” and “her” versions of the design so that the women’s T-shirts were accented on two corners with pretty pink flowers. As if this wasn’t enough, she also gifted everyone with a super cool key chain she ordered through Zazzle, using an exclusive design created by DAVN, also generously shared with Robin. (THANK YOU ROBIN and DAVN!!)
Kalena (aka Crafting Queen Extraordinaire), was simultaneously working on all of her own AMAZING ideas for the get together, which included creating goodie bags which were bulging with creative David related goodies, which she also designed. To BEGIN with, the goodie bags themselves are keepsake worthy in that one side has a photo of David wearing a jacket in the exact shade of green that matches the CD cover, and the opposite side of the bags were decorated with the David Archuleta logo. Kalena even customized the handles of the goodie bags with ribbons that also matched the green shades on the CD cover, and accented them with adorable musical notes.(SOOO CUTE!) Inside each bag was another green organza drawstring bag that contained an adorable mini pillow with a picture of David on one side, against black material adorned with musical notes which Kalena stuffed and sewed herself. Also included was a two sided charm, suitable for use on a bracelet or necklace, which had two different swoon inducing pictures of David, which was also made by Kalena with Alan’s help. There was a commemorative green ribbon which was embossed with the date of our get together, “Nor-Cal Archies,” and “BEGIN The Next Chapter,” in case anyone needed a reminder of this awesome event (AS IF!!!!). A business card was included that listed all of the charities that David supports and their websites so that we have a handy reference when we want to donate to one of his many causes. Last, but certainly not least, there was a GORGEOUS rubber bracelet in, of course, BEGIN. green with “(heart symbol) David’Archuleta #DA2014″ . These awesome bracelets almost failed to make the party because the post office was insisting that they had delivered the little green treasures to Kalena’s workplace on a Saturday, which was impossible because it is closed on Saturdays. After several anxious calls between Kalena and the post office, the wayward bracelets were finally located (HOORAY), just in the nick of time (tragedy averted)! Needless to say, Kalena’s craft skills make Martha Stewart look like a rank amateur! Her creations are so imaginative and professional that she can seriously quit her day job and make event planning her full time occupation!
I was privy to the behind the scenes activities because I was lucky enough to work with Kalena and Robin in planning the fan luncheon. My contributions, however, were negligible in comparison to those of Kalena and Robin. I found a bakery that could photo scan the same image that was on the t-shirts so that it matched the BEGIN theme, and I made the posters which said “Thank you David for BEGIN.! We miss you!” “With (heart symbol), Nor-Cal Archies.” Obviously, I lack both the artistic talent and imagination of my co-planners. However, I loved the collaborative planning process which involved exchanging e-mails to share our ideas and asking each other for input. In fact, the excitement and anticipation involved in bouncing ideas off of each other was as fun as the event itself. An example of how well this process worked can be seen with respect to Robin’s fantastic idea of having a balloon bouquet with 7 green balloons to represent BEGIN, and 5 multi-colored balloons to represent the diversity of the fans. She suggested that we could release the balloons at the end of the party. Kalena then added that we could write BEGIN. on the balloons and tie cards to them with messages of hope that each of us wrote on them, so that whoever found them would receive an inspirational message (so cool and so David-like)! A great idea made even greater through collaboration!
All of this brainstorming and effort culminated on Sunday, the day of our luncheon. Kalena, Jenny, Theresa, Alan, Robin and I arrived early to decorate. First we set out STUNNING framed place cards that Kalena made, which had each of our names superimposed on a striking black and white photo of David from his My Kind of Christmas concert. Also placed at each table setting was a program that Kalena designed which had a photo of the BEGIN. CD cover on the front, and more photos of David and some of his inspirational quotes inside. On the back of the program was a list of the resources and venders that we all used in putting the event together. Her thought was that we should acknowledge those without whom our event would not have been possible (SO THOUGHTFUL!) One vender who was inadvertently left off the card was Kim’s Party Favors (located in the San Jose Flea Market). Kalena wants to thank them for their prompt and professional service in supplying the organza bags and for helping make the commemorative ribbons regarding which they did a great job. The final touch for each place setting was a small bottle of green bubbles, which had been dyed with food coloring.
In the meantime, Robin was busy displaying the incredible flameless candle lantern she had lined with translucent vellum on which she had printed images of David in silhouette. It literally gave off an Archuglow! (SO CLEVER AND ARTISTIC !) Jenny was writing BEGIN. on all of the green balloons, and #DA2014 on the multi-colored balloons, getting them ready for the big release. (Balloon writing is definitely an art!)
When the rest of the Archies arrived (Nancy, Sheng-Yung, Neil and Vivian), the party really started!! It was great seeing everyone again and watching their reactions to all of the BEGIN related goodies that were everywhere to be seen. After we got reacquainted, we sat down to a DELICIOUS luncheon of Thai food, including, of course, pad thai, pineapple fried rice, spring rolls, curry chicken, and beef with garlic, spinach and peanut sauce, YUM! We were serenaded during our meal by David, courtesy of Jenny who played BEGIN from her cell phone. All during the festivities, Robin took pictures to memorialize the event. I think Nancy and Sheng-Yung helped with taking pictures as well. If not, they were certainly entertaining and made us giggle a lot!
With our tummies satisfied, it was time to test our Archuknowledge with a rousing game of David trivia. Naturally, our collective ODD meant that we all knew WAAAAY too much about David, so it took 2 bonus questions to finally break the tie between us. The vivacious Vivian ultimately emerged the victor (WAY TO GO VIVIAN)! The tie-breaking question was a toughie: “What phrase did Anya, her mom and brother always say together?” The answer is “Let’s volt in!” How in the heck did Vivian remember that?! Vivian was rewarded for her superior knowledge of all things David by receiving another David keychain and an absolutely BEAUTIFUL mouse pad with the same design as on the T-shirts. Both items were again, generously gifted by Robin. Vivian deserved to win these lovely gifts because of her own generosity in donating 4 BEGIN CDs to fans who have yet to own this masterpiece. Since Theresa did not have BEGIN. yet, she was delighted to be gifted one from Vivian. Three more CDs are available to anyone who needs one, and can be obtained by e-mailing Robin at robintuyen@gmail.com.
As we chowed down on our BEGIN themed cake with fresh strawberries, we wrote our messages of hope on the cards so they could be tied to balloons. Examples of what some of the messages said are: ” It takes one person to make a difference, and that person is you (Kalena),” “You will never be lonely if you befriend yourself (David’s quote selected by Robin)” “Never be afraid to follow your dreams (me).” We also wrote messages to David himself on a mat that would be used as a frame for the group picture we intended to take that day. Alan came to the rescue and volunteered to retrieve the mat from Kalena’s home in Santa Clara, (A 45 minute round trip…whew!) when it was discovered that it was left behind. (Thanks Alan!) We all donned our newly acquired T-shirts to take the group photo for David, and to also record a video message to Kari, thanking her for everything that she has done for David and for all of us. It was Neil’s suggestion to do a Thank You video for Kari, and everyone came together and thought it would go well with releasing the balloons, symbolizing Kari’s hard work, devotion and dedication to the fans, and the inspiration David has brought to the the fanbase with the release, rise, and flight of HOPE. Sooooo, DAVID! The photo/video session was hysterical, as it took more than a few attempts to get it right. As we posed in front of Simply Thai in our matching T-shirts, holding balloons and our place card name frames so David would know who is who (GREAT idea Jenny!), as well as our signs with messages for David, numerous confused and curious motorists gawked at us as they drove by. I’m sure we made quite the spectacle. We also now have the answer to the proverbial question, “How many Archies does it take to unravel the tangled strings of a BEGIN balloon bouquet?” Answer: Ten. LOL!
At the end of our video for Kari, shot by Alan, we released the balloons with their messages of hope. Watching them float skyward and scatter in the breeze was both fun and inspiring! It was a perfect ending to a perfect event! 4 1/2 hours have never passed so quickly!
A HUMONGOUS THANK YOU to Kalena and Robin for working tirelessly, for literally weeks, to put together the Archie social event of the season! (In Kalena’s case, she was working on her projects for 6 weeks!!) Their generosity of spirit, time, effort and financial expenditures resulted in a fabulous tribute to David, thanking him for BEGIN, and a FABULOUS fan gathering we will long remember! The thought they put into everything and their attention to detail was truly mind boggling! It was obviously a labor of love, for both David and for their fellow Archies. After Sunday, I feel doubly blessed. I am a fan of the most AMAZING singer in the world, and I have gotten to know the most AMAZING and THOUGHTFUL fans in the world! The only downside to pulling out all of the stops for this fan gathering is that it makes it difficult to reach that level of excellence again. Kalena advises me, however, that she has a lot more ideas for the next fan gathering which will occur in October when Lorma is scheduled to return California! All I can say to that is, WOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!
A final thank you to Robin for creating the EXCELLENT videos of our event!!! Also, GREAT NEWS FOR ARCHIES EVERYWHERE!!! Kalena has some extra bracelets and mini pillows which she is willing to share with other Archies on a first come first served basis. Love David wearing black but I saw him @ the AI7 tour and he had on a white tee shirt and it looked fabulous on him. Black/white are great for his skin tone and eye color. It pops! He can actually wear just about any color underneath either Black/White/Grey. Loved the light pink tee with I believe it was a black/dark jacket. Dark colors over light make him look more mature and his age. JMHO.

Sarahhazel, yeah…i’m in the process of converting myself from a night owl to an early bird. It’s hard but it’s starting to work. At first I used to stay up until 3am just tossing and turning not being able to sleep even though I was exhausted. But now I am more able to sleep at the right times and my body is waking up naturally earlier.
I vote for a nice tailored vest, as long as it is paired with a shirt. Don’t like the t-shirt with baggy arms under a vest look.

Aww…I’ll never forget the widdle scarves. lol. At my very first concert, it was freeeezing outside, but very hot inside. So David starts the concert with his scarf on, of course. Then he says, “Oh man. It’s soooo hot in here”, and innocently starts to take off the scarf. All the teens start screaming their heads off, David just freezes & looks at the audience like “What did I just do?”, giggles and puts the scarf back on again. lol. You had to be there, but it was just hilarous.

Sometimes it’s moments like now, it feels surreal to think that we’re sitting here chatting together and david has been gone for 6months. I reflect back to that time of the announcement and the shock and misery that washed over the fanbase, with a psuedo-death sentence looming before us. Now we’re here, we’re living the experience (not saying it feels like a death sentence now, just that people initially felt like it was the end of the world, lol). I guess just as this day has come, the day of his home coming will arrive also.
So…six months in….what are your assessments of things? Have they been as bad as you expected? Better? Worse?
If David was blind folded what would be the first thing you notice about him? Keep in mind you don’t know who he is and he has not spoken to you yet?…….I say blind folded because from what I hear his eyes are amazing!! LOL!!

Yesterdaywhen I was blabbing on, I got thinking (and talking) about how david always chooses his songs very carefully with messages to them. I mentioned how I suspect there are sub-messages in his song selection for Begin. You know – messages beyond the most obvious. Lines in the songs or sub-themes that may have resonated with him and influenced his decisions to go with that song choice. And yesterday while I was driving and listening I was thinking about that – and I really think there is a little bit of a theme in some of the songs about needing to get away from it all, connect with simpler things etc. I think he really needed to get away from the celebrity for a while.
Shanny, I think I am doing what David suggested. Continue to live me life, don’t concentrate so much on him (of course, that is not the case today, lol). Do some things I have put on the back burner the last 4 years.
I think in some way is was telling us, he is like us, trying to live his life as he sees fit. He does not see himself as a super star, just a normal guy.
As the line in NA went: “I am an ordinary guy, I just have an extraordinary job!”

Shanny – I think its been better. I guess I forsee the next 18 months to be like the last six. David will make sure we have music/MVs, etc periodically and some news about him. This may be unpopular but I truly believe the pictures and news, however limited, we get from Chile helps ALOT. Imagine, not seeing (and hearing in the July 15 concert fan vid) him for the whole 2 years. It would be nice for him to send something, a picture or a short vid, himself – maybe at the year mark. But thats his choice. And I am very thankful for the concerts he is having and will have in Chile. Hopefully we get detailed news from each one.
Josie….8:07……the way I see it, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it ………….but pray for David, trust that God has a plan for his life and all will be well when he returns……….. be here for him when he does……..and for each other in the meantime. Hard as it is, there’s just no other way around it. (hope that doesn’t sound insensitive…….I don’t mean it to).

Hello Everyone! Hope you all are having a great day. I did a sleep apnea test last night at a local hospital. Quite interesting trying to sleep with all of these wires attached to you,lol. Didnt think I slept alot, but did sleep enough to for them to tell me I snore, loudly, lol. Took a nap a little bit ago though, was a little tired from the sleep test, which sounds a bit odd.
Best David outfit? In the Matt Clayton pic’s, the white t-shirt with dark pants, there are 2 of the best photos of David. One where he’s sitting on a stool, looking straight ahead, with his left hand on his left leg, toward his knee & his right hand on his right leg. Then the one thats more of a close up. i think david needed to escape his fame in the US before he had some kind of breakdown. think he’s probably enjoying his missionary status in chile even tho there are fans chasing after him lol! i was expecting a bit more communication like a tweet every tuesday telling us how he feels and what he’s doing. so that makes me kind of sad but in reality whether he is in chile or utah or LA i have no chance of seeing him so it really isn’t that different.

Its interesting reading all of your thoughts.
I think for me, its slightly better than I anticipated. I think mostly I had no expectations…was preparing myself for the worst and hoping for the best kind of thing. I guess david has been less communicative than I expected but you peeps make up for that.
And when I consider his need to get away, take a break…makes me feel that I want to give him as much space as he needs. So if no communication till 2014 is what he needs, then…we have each other to blab with at least, right?

As for the blind fold question….i think when the eyes are covered up, subconciously our eyes go to the mouth for body language clues..so I would say his mouth…and yeah probably his hands for the same reason …and because as someone mentioned, he’d be waving them around while talking…probably even more so because subconsciously his mind would be trying to compensate for not being able to make proper facial expressions while communicating.

but I do remember how apparently a lot of the native missionaries don’t get any mail or care packages and things and we discussed at maybe the 6/12/18 month marks we could all contribute a little something to send to the missionaries in his mission, if we had permission to do so from his mission president. Is anyone still interested in that idea?

Its already the 28th here, so I would have to mobilize into action if I was going to join in and have it postmarked with the right date!
Shanny, She told me that I snore, but I didnt need to have a mask on, didnt have enough apnea moments to warrant that. You have to have 20 or more an hour & I didnt have nearly that much. The neurological worries are mine, Dr didnt really mention it, just a bit nervous about it. I meet with a Dr to discuss the sleep apnea test in about a week & a 1/2. I agree with you, whatever David wants to do as far as communicating with us or not, is fine with me. Dont see a problem if he wants to give us a “I’m going great, love the food, hope you all are fine” statement once in a while, that would be great. The thing is, I know he’s thinking about his family, friends & us, when he can, so thats pretty wonderful, just hope he’s happy, healthy & things are going well.

I pretty much assume that if we don’t hear anything then he’s still alive and kickin’. And that if he’s not communicating its because he’s so focused on what he’s doing which means he must be happy.
A little phrase goes through my head each time I think of david out on his mission…and it’s ..’he’s really doing this!’. I guess I was a little unsure if he would be able to get a normal enough missionary experience, which I believe is what he wanted. And he seems to be getting a pretty close approximation of it. I asked my hubby about it once (he served a mission) and he gave me a pretty insightful answer I thought. He said that it woulf seem normal to david because it would be all he knows, it would be his own personal experience of a mission.
They must have the cow boy boots I am sure they will run into Wibur and the gang and you know what that means……
You all just made me picture David ironing his shirts. How precious. I bet they are perfect. I wonder if he can’t sleep, he gets up a washes a shirt in the sink. lol (I had a friend who used to iron only the part you saw, the collar, cuffs, and front part of the shirt. They were not a missionary, just wore shirts and jackets).

Martha, ROTFL, Only irons the parts you see. I tried to iron a shirt real quick one day on the arm of my sofa. My sofa now has an iron mark on it. A sofa I bought about 2 years ago. Thankgoodness for throw blankets
