BEGIN. Debuts & Fans Rejoice!
It began in Japan- the tweets from fans that Japan iTunes had made BEGIN. available for download rocketed through the Twitterverse and lit the fuse that would eventually turn the fan base into a fiery ball of emotions punctuated by the 3 most used letters on the keyboard: O-M-GGGGGGGGGGG!
BEGIN. stormed across the ocean and ignited Europe – UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, France & Denmark fell under the Archuspell as the EuroArchies got their first listen and felt the full impact of those glorious notes that were still hours away from US shores. BEGIN. began its’ march up the iTunes charts heading straight for the top!
The minutes ticked by and Twitter was on fire with Archies trending David Archuleta Begin Cd Is Here – even though it wasn’t quite yet – but it didn’t take long to make the WWTT chart at the #5 spot!
The wait was becoming unbearable and desperation has set in – those awaiting arrival of their physical cds contemplate bribery of a Federal employee of the US Postal Service and bargains are struck with promises of cookies, cupcakes or full cakes emblazoned with the likeness of David Archuleta! Then the fandom goes nuclear as Vlog #6 is unleashed on the unsuspecting masses. No amount of preparation is sufficient – not even @zerogravity’s custom DA Emergency Kit!

Itunes accounts across the nation are prepped and ready to receive their downloads the second BEGIN. drops – and Kari in her infinite wisdom posts the two amazing pics from the Bench photoshoot – Gray Shirt with striped pocket FTW! And as we have never seen this outfit in any Bench campaign to date, we would have to conclude that 1. There is another Bench campaign in the works with more BTS vids, or 2. These were the reject photos not selected for a Bench ad – which, by the looks of those pics – is highly unlikely!

I am no expert on the charts, but I did watch as BEGIN. marched up the iTunes charts with a vengeance! In a few hours it had broken into the Top 10 at #10 on Pop Albums and was into the Top 50 at #49 for Overall Albums! Let’s see if we can generate enough excitement around BEGIN. to get it to #1!

Fun Times in FOD Chat!
A grand time was had by all as FOD Chat hosted a Countdown to BEGIN. Party last night as we waited for our downloads from itunes! Many fans came to squee and share stories and hopes for a 2014 Tour! DOK & DFT hosted as mods and kept the box entertaining and fun with a David Trivia game that tested our “fan knowledge” and had everyone laughing and taking a stroll down memory lane.

Today was supposed to be such a joyful day. I just received a phone call that my very dear friend passed away early this morning. I’m heartbroken right now. I just need to listen to BEGIN. and hope David’s voice will give me some peace!

BEGIN. is more than I dreamed of. Can’t listen to it enough. The songs I thought would be my favorites aren’t necessarily now that I’ve listened to all the songs. They are all great, but a couple really stand out for me like True Colors and Pride (In the Name of Love). Really, though, I love them all!

Ksf, i’m surprised he hasn’t really done any R&B already. It seems so much a natural part of him and what he historically liked to sing/listen to, kind of thing. Although I think Things Are Gonna Get Better has some R&B undertones at some points in the song.

My friend Jerianne is down to one car which her husband takes to work. Awhile ago I really got her into being a huge fan of David’s. So, later today I’m driving her to Deseret Book for her to buy a copy of Begin. I don’t have mine yet but we’ll be listening to hers on our way home. It’s close by me, so we’ll be taking the long way home. LOL. I was warned by a friend to not drive while you’re listening or tear stained eyes may keep you from being able to see well. Whether my copy comes today or not, I’ll be listening to the whole CD.

Ksf, yeah, I agree. Who knows what will happen in the future I guess. It sure will be interesting to see david evolve post-mission. I think he has already taken great strides over the last year, in terms of finding more independence musically. And after this break from music, once he gets into his stride again, I think he’ll be eager to really dig deep and unleesh that sleeping giant within.
Janel – ha yeah…in my car on long straight roads is my favourite way to listen to david. Only problem is, sometimes I want to close my eyes and just get lost in the glory of the music….but can never allow myself that pleasure for obvious reasons. lol Enjoy it later on today then.

From his early days as a child vocal sensation on Star Search to placing second on American Idol Season 7, David Archuleta has been a pop singer we’ve watched with interest, but perhaps also a bit of disappointment. While his stellar vocals brim with promise, his four studio releases so far have simply fallen into the growing abyss of mediocre pop offerings of recent years. His newest release, Begin., may change that trend.
Ironically, this record comes across more as a temporary interlude, rather than a shift in direction. With Archuleta reportedly on a 2-year hiatus from music while he serves as a Mormon missionary, Begin. is actually billed as an inspirational album, his press releases calling it a musical portrayal of Archuleta’s connection to God. To that effect, the record primarily consists of cover songs from notable artists ranging from Keane to Cyndi Lauper to Simon & Garfunkel, plus one original tune “Broken,” and a hymn at the end. While making a cover album always presents a bit of risk, I have to say that Archuleta’s vocal performances on this record cause it to stand out more than anything I’ve heard from him in years. While known for his near-flawless technical deliveries, Archuleta often falls short on emotional connection; but by choosing a track list closer to his heart, he seems able to convey a deeper emotion and sense of meaning with these songs. It’s more reflective and less bubble-gum pop than his previous work, but it’s just plain better music than he’s come out with in awhile.
It’s difficult to judge an inspirational album like this, for the simple reason that it’s a deeper expression than just the music alone, and you don’t want to find yourself judging someone’s expression of faith. But if I can separate it out and just look at it from a musical standpoint alone, I should point out two mis-steps in particular. The Keane cover “Somewhere Only We Know” is fine, but the arrangement sounds too close to the original, making it seem a bit karaoke [spoken in a Simon Cowell-esque British accent]. Also, people in general should probably just give up trying to cover U2; Archuleta’s version of “Pride (In the Name of Love)” just muddles up a great rock song in a mess of pop nonsense [also spoken like Simon Cowell].
However, these mis-steps don’t overshadow the moments of brilliance on Begin. Archuleta shines on songs like “Angels,” “Everybody Hurts” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and the closing hymn “Be Still My Soul” is tasteful and simply beautiful.
Overall, Begin. is not just a fitting album reflecting a certain season in David Archuleta’s life; even with its flaws, it also happens to be one of his best albums so far. This might be an interlude, but in my humble opinion, Archuleta should take his cue from this record, because if future records have anywhere near the emotional quality of this one, it could be a turning point in his career.

David’s voice, arrangements, and music are so exquisite! I don’t think any of us could thank David enough for this incredible gift he has left us. I’m so thrilled with how “Don’t Give Up” turned out, and am even more pleased David chose to invite Libbie Linton to sing this with him. Libbie’s voice is beauiful, and both she and David compliment each other’s voices amazing well. David’s voice is so very impressive on this song. Of course David’s voice is incredible on each and every song! HAPPY LISTENING EVERYONE!

The thing is…with regards to the ‘lack of emotional connection’ bit….anyone reading that will instantly think the same thing as us – that David’s strength is his ability to deliver the emotions of a song – and so when people can see that the only criticism is not really a criticism at all, they must surely realise that the album is worth checking out!

kimk-I do think I understand what the commenter was trying to convey…we have heard David live and lets face there is nothing more emotion packed then that. But for those that haven’t, maybe the songs do come across as less emotional then what we hear/read into them. If his best performances are LIVE (and I think all fans can attest to that) then it could be a fair assessment. Do I agree with it…that’s a story for another time. I felt it was a fair review and 99% favorable.

Candy – I completely agree. There aren’t many performers, if any, who convey the same emotion on a recording as they do live. It’s almost impossible to do. I remember reading an article about Jason Mraz discussing the same issue.

But if you convert the songs from itunes to mp3 it’s more easy to gift, sending them through email.

I just came back from Walmart and no BEGIN cd. lots of JB cds though and lots of other Idol cds, asked if they would have them they said they had no idea, very disappointed. Have not checked Target yet, but will later, not expect it there either.
I pre ordered from Deseret, I see some have received E-mails saying theirs was shipped, but I have not.

I think the review was decent but I’m confused about the lack of emotion connection. I just don’t get it. It was the emotional connection seeing him on AI7 that first drew me in and that was on a TV screen that I wasn’t watching at the time. Hearing him live …just put me over the top. I listen to a lot of artist and like their songs because their catchy but could never say I felt a emotional connection. I think David has the same singing quality as Adele, Celine can’t really think of a male artist other then JGroban but I get more of a connection with David’s songs then Josh. That reviewer should listen to “Tell Me” “You Are My Song” on the OPM cd WYSYLM and the songs on TOSOD and then say that David doesn’t convey emotion when he sings. JMHO

I love how Broken stands up to all these iconic songs. So looking forward to the continued journey with this ridicuiously talented man.
Maybe David should always sing like he did at Z100. Elevator was KILLER!! Awesome emotion and grit. Can’t go wrong when you sing with soul, lol!

Why the heck did I listen to that Idolator review?! Why are there always people that have to constantly be cruel and belittle David and his work. I’m crying so hard right now. I know I shouldn’t let it get to me. At least we get David!!! I’ve already read a couple comments on ITunes that say David’s cover of BEAUTIFUL is horrible! WHATEVER!!!!
I looked up the sales for TOSOD and it was #13 for album sales the first week. It sold 24,000 copies. I know it was in the top 10 on iTunes the first day. I’m pretty sure that BEGIN. will not sell that many this week, but it doesn’t have to. This is an independent release with David not available to promote it. It cost much less to make the album and market it.
That reviewer from Idolator should hook up with Constantine. I think they were made for each other, Ughh!!!
I think I need to have a certain state of mind about the negative reviews which will unfortunately be coming in, and not let them get me down so much.
It’s okay. EVERY artist gets bad reviews. It comes with the territory and if you’re NOT being criticized it’s because no one thinks you’re worth mentioning. Don’t take it so personally.
Sorry I posted the review. I really should have put a warning but thats like saying “don’t read this bad review” so it defeats the purpose.
I have seen reviews for everything from movies, music, restaurants; and usually they range from super sweet to cruel. I doesn’t bother me as much; though, I would like to see wonderful review, I know these are common in alot of reviews.
If I were reading or hearing the review, it would stir my curiosity and I would go over to Itunes and listen to the previews. I wouldn’t take the reviewer’s word for it AT ALL.
It takes me a while to learn, no more reviews from me. I will, if I find them, will send them only to the front page so they can see them.
I am so disappointed, I went to Wal-Mart this a.m. and scoured all the shelves…looking for David…finally saw a clerk….asked her about David’s CD…she said that they didn’t have it…I asked if it would be coming in…she said that a third party stocks the CD’s and she doesn’t have any information,,,,she did say that I was the 2nd person to ask for his CD today….that made be happy, I was beginning to think that I was his only fan in Nebraska…I going to call Best Buy…
My son works for Amazon in Seattle, should have gone thru him…but I just love seeing David’s albums on display…
David in my opinion never got the respect he deserved from the music industry (label) or Press for that matter. IMHO if you are not a Medicore Media Creation you have to struggle to be known for your talent. When they review David’s music why can it not be about his voice alone. Today it’s not how you sing a song it how good you can lip synch(live) and dance and create buzz for yourself that gets you recognized. Has nothing to do with singing talent. It’s funny David doesn’t get that much free publicity but if he puts out any type of music the vultures are their to disect it. Sorry about my rant!

Martha – I guess I’m scratching my head trying to understand…I’ve yet to find a music artist, politician, movie, etc…that EVERYONE likes. Such is life so why should we expect it to be any different with David? And honestly, these reviews have not been nasty or derogatory in any way. Now, if they’d said that David can’t sing then that would be something, lol, but they didn’t. I guess I just take everything with a grain of salt, both the bad AND good reviews. Jmo.
I just check on itunes and David is #41 in the top 100 albums. Regarding the reviews I learn not to care about them. I love David’s music and it is for my enjoyment and not the reviewer. It is the same like with the movies. Myself I think David did a great job on this album and like he says it was done for us his fans.

Hello, I always lurk but never post. So here I am. I love David and always will, but to me this album is a little underwhelming. I really wanted to love it, but so far it is not my favorite. He sings beautifully, but I want more upbeat, original songs from him. I know he’s so much better than this. I still hope this album does well. I also hope that his next albums to follow will be more amazing. No tomatoes please….
I guess because we as fans know how emotional David had to be when he recorded these songs, we are taken back when someone says it lacks emotion. I guess it shouldn’t bother me, because I love the album and that’s all that matters. I still say, are they listening to a different album?!?, lol.

Alwaysalurker an original cd could not be done in time with only a couple weeks to til his mission but sure you know that. as for upbeat.. I think he chose the songs to go along with his mission and what he is doing and why he is doing it right now.

Anita, definitely try not to take the negative reviews on I-tunes personally. One that called the album “terrible” thinks JB’s album will win Record of the Year so, as always, consider the source. Like cq said, at least critics are listening. The only thing worse would be if no one was interested to even listen and review it. Those that know David’s name (presumably because they enjoy his voice) who didn’t know he had a new album coming out will perk their ears and check it out and form their own opinion, regardless of what the review said. I know what I like and I love this CD and, from what I’ve seen and read so far, I’m in the majority.

alwayslurker, you’re welcome to your opinion, but I must say I totally disagree with you, I think its a gorgeous album. David did this for his fans & I’m sure to keep his name out there. He had a few weeks to do it & he did it, plus did the 6 part vlog for us, plus I think 1 or two vids were done, not sure though. All he did in the Phils, plus this cd, he’s truely amazing, with all that he got accomplished, he’s a good man. I dont know how I can thank him enough

Hey Rud123! I agree. Its tough though, when you know they probably listen to it while their doing 10 other things & dont take the time to really listen or appreciate it. I wonder if they even listened to the whole cd or just the snippets. I think alot of reviews are bought & paid for, be it cash or favors.
just have to quickly drop in to remind us that David’s first CD got not-so-good reviews and did great! TOSOD got pretty good reviews for the most part but did not sell well. So as far as I’m concerned let the reviewers say whatever! Maybe it will work the same for this one?????
Grace – just wondering…I’m not a “young” fan (34) and I LOVE upbeat music (pop, rap, etc.) and am hoping for more of that from David when he returns. He is, after all, YOUNG. Afternoon eveyone. Angelbymyside so sorry to hear of your loss of your dear friend. May God bless her and her family. .. Kalei thank you for the Begin release posts. Likrd seeong those pictures again. Well I went to Itunes and downloaded BEGIN. Melted while I listened to it at ! ish in the morning. Got an e-mail from Itunes my pre-order is ready. Click on and seems now I have two downloads. I can’t win. it’s okay with me but it doesn’t make sense. Hate download buying. I did it just for the sales #. Went to stores this morning here in MD. Walmart had 2 had to have the girl find it for me. Hidden behind other cds and not out where the new releases were. Bought i and put the other one where you could see it. Barnes and Noble.. couldn’t find it. Lady up front called the cd dept and asked. The fellow David from the dept said he had 1. It was on a shelf facing the wall. I asked if he had more. He said no, but because I bought the 1 they would order more. Told him how do they expect to sell them if they don’t have any. Besides I told him they should have more because he was the only one who could sing out of all the others on the rack. K-Mart didn’t have any. Even asked them to look in the back. Nope. Deseret Books said they shipped my pre-orders and Walmart too. Didn’t get em yet. The album is fantastic. I love all the emotion David has put into the songs. He is a musical genius. No one else will know unless they are able to buy one. Nothing makes much sense anymore.
Beth – I’ve seen those comments. I’ve actually been around since the first
album, but mostly as a lurker. So yeah, I understand that. And yet, things always turn suspicious when someone doesn’t have the same level of excitement for a David project as others or disagrees. It doesn’t matter how it’s said that’s just what happens. It annoys me to no end. And I think bringing up illegal downloading because you don’t like someone’s opinion is just a new low. Makes my skin crawl honestly.

Good Afternoon Everyone!!! I do mean GOOOOOOOD!!!! David’s CD is just amazing and I have been camped out at my computer listening non-stop all morning. I love each and every song and feel so blessed to be David’s fan!!!!
I hope that we can unite together as David fans and really celebrate this day for what it is.
David has worked tirelessly for his fans for more than 4 years and more now. I feel that there is everything to celebrate. This CD is the most amazing piece of music that I have heard for a very long time. It was given to us as a gift from where David’s heart and mind were dwelling. There is so much to be excited about!!!! This CD was given directly from David’s heart….and I know that most every fan can feel his heart in each and every song!!! I care not what any reviewer says. I know what I hear, and I know what I feel when I listen, I know what is in my heart and what is in David’s heart…..and that is all that I need. No reviewer can change that just because they have not made that connection. The reviewer is the looser in my opinion.

My story of buying David cd today:
So I went to walmart hoping that they would sell his cd there. When I got to the music section and scan though the new releases and there I didn’t even have to read it because the album cover art caught my eye immediately. I was so excited! I told my brother look here it is in my hands after waiting for months. I scan around and saw that they had put his CD on the bottom section of the new releases and justin bieber on the top. I know I know what i did next was wrong for bieber but I put one of David cd’s in top of JB. I was just leaving when my brother who is 11 yrs old put another BEGIN. cd infront of another JB cd. (they had 3 stacks for JB cd)I told him to hurry up because one of the walmart employer was coming. We left but decided to come back to check again. When we came back this lady was standing infront of the new releases and she grab the BEGIN. cd that we put in front of JB cd! SUCEED! since we put BEGIN on the top she saw it otherwise maybe she would have never seen BEGIN. on the bottom. We waited and watched her like stokers to see if she took the cd and I couldn’t believe it SHE TOOK IT! end of the story. We left the new release section because the walmart employer was looking at us really suspicious haha.

P.S. I mentioned to my husband while we were out looking for the CD that not everyone has a computer or even likes them so they can’t buy it on line. Some people don’t like credit cards either especially on-line. Makes it hard to sell the CD if you can’t get your hands on it. I’m glad the fanbase gets a hold of it. Just wish others could hear this fabulous album that David made. Again I can not say enough that it is special in so many beautiful ways. His voice is kilig!!!

Beth.. Hi. Couldn’t sleep last night after I listened to the Begin album on Itunes. I was so excited and emotional . I’m so glad that others felt the deep feelings coming from David. I honestly find it hard to believe how much he can convey such heartfelt emotion at his young age. Ah what can I say , I love David’s voice, music and him. What’s not to like? He has it all. We are so lucky for this album. It hits home and that’s where I like to be!

I just want to respond that yes, all my downloads have been legal. Of course I support David and would love to see this album at #1 overall on Itunes. I’ve been to 4 concerts and love seeing and hearing him live. I have most of his other albums too.
As far as favorite song, I like Broken and Don’t Give up. I will always support his music. This album is reflect where his heart is right now, so I’m ok with it.

In that Idolator review she says “we’ve heard these songs before”…DUH that’s why they are called “covers”.
Went to Deseret Book with my friend Jerianne to get her Begin CD. Deseret Book was playing it at the store and we listened to it on the way home. Took some of the $ given to me by others for the fan dinner and bought a CD for a prize drawing. I’ll exchange it out when mine comes in the mail (mail lady not here yet, but my friend who bought it for me said it’s been shipped). Listening to it now.
Now for my defintion of Begin: Emotion provoking notes that David hits in every song. David brings energy into 10 uplifting songs. His 8 covers are as good or better than the originals, and they bring an extra element to the songs which sweep you up into each breathtaking note. David puts an extra exclaimation point on each song with runs which are out of this world. Each original artist should be proud of David’s renditions of their songs.
Included in the CD is an original song by David which could be the theme song for Invisible Children and in fact is mentioned in the song. It is powerful and makes you think about what is being done to these precious children with innocence taken away from them so young. Broke but not broken.
The last song is Be Still My Soul and a personal favorite. At his solo performance at BYU Idaho in June of 2012 David showed his audience just how meaningful this song is to him and helped him in his decisions in his life. This rendition on the Begin CD is beautiful, with an orchestra to bring the message of the song to the soul of the listener. He adds a few extra “Be Still My Soul’s” between the last two verses that just make you catch your breath.
I give this CD 5 stars out of 5 and would highly recommend this CD to people of all ages.
had a crazy thought the other day~ what if one of us david fans were able to write some amazing lyrics and sent them to david and told him to do the melody and then when he comes back he records it and then it’s a radio hit and then he gets a grammy nomination and the person(one of usLOL)who wrote the lyrics would get to go to the grammys with david and share that award if he won.and hopefully get to go to the after party with david and kiss him!

When I went to Walmart today to check if they had BEGIN., what do I see but the Biebs right on the top shelf. Honestly, it made me cringe! All of this year’s Idols CD’s were there too….but alas NO DAVID! It boggles the mind!

Hey Alwaysalurker, thanks for coming back to answer my question. I hope you didn’t misunderstand what I was trying to say. My emphasis was on ‘financial support’ although the CD is not exactly in your cup of tea so that he can continue to make music for his career. I think most of FOD’ers speak their mind although sometimes some may not agree. Among David’s CDs, there are some CDs I don’t really love, but I still buy them just to support him. We can always speak what we feel in our mind, so you are always welcome here.

To be fair, most people only like what’s now and what is popular. I actually don’t like to push my likes on to others, everyone has different tastes. I feel that only David will be able to convert others by putting out music that will be liked by the masses. I truely believe that will happen when he returns.

ksf, Thats an interesting point, in that knowing what we know about David, what he is capable of is mindboggling. The variety of songs in this cd show that & while this is the closest thing we’ve had to a cd sounding like live performances, thats something I think David should do sooner than later, is a live cd. No one, can sing like David live. Look what he can do when hopping all over the stage singing Zero Gravity, given his one vocal cord & breathing issues that come along with it, the man sounds like he’s singing standing still, he sounds fantastic. I dont think there are many outthere who can do that, he’s amazing. Just think of all the things he has yet to accomplish, musically speaking, the sky’s the limit

I don’t know about anyone else here but BEGIN. is my favorite album from David to date. I really love each album all for different reasons, but this one is more mature sounding. I love the songs he chose and both his voice and the arrangements of the songs are stellar. I marvel at how he put this album together in just weeks before he left on his mission. Simply put, it’s his gift to his fans and it will always be special to me!

Wow, I can’t believe the album release date for “BEGIN.” has finally arrived!
There was so much to do in such a short time, but I have to let the fans know how much this album means. This was definitely an album done against the odds, but done for the people who have meant so much to me, and a way to bring them on the journey I’m currently on right now to an extent. These songs have a reason behind them, and I hope that through this album you will understand better why I am out here on my mission.

tami_lyn, I think there are some people who will resent him for being Mormon, which is sad. He is one of the most non-judgemental people out there, he doesnt put people in a certain catagory, well, only that they are compassionate, kind & loving to others, but, outside of that, he doesnt. Its weird, but some people who have been discrimated against are the most predjudice, not all, but there are a few. I could care less about who marry’s who, who is this, who is that, all I care about is if there a good person. It appears to me, thats how David feels, judging by the things I’ve heard him say & his actions. But like he said, no matter how nice you are, how respectful, some people are still gonna hate your guts. I think David knows you cant please everyone, but, I think, its gonna hurt sometimes, regardless

Just got off the phone with Walmart…no Begin yet, I should call back and 2 days. Well POOH TO THAT !!! SO I called Barnes and Noble and the guy said they had 2 and they sold them today. I told him that I couldn’t believe they only got 2 to sell. He was all kinds of accomodating and said that they are getting more in because the 2 sold so well haha. I’m on the list for the next shipment. I hope they get more that 2 copies gosh darn it!!!! I heard Begin. last night in it’s “entirety” by myself and it was A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE!!!!!!! His version of those songs actually SPEAK TO ME!!!! I’m sure you’ve all had that same exact experience. I can’t wait to hear it later. BTW, my hubby told me he ordered 2 copies of Begin. from Deseret. I was in shock and said, Why 2???” and he said cuz they were on sale. That’s my husband… the bargain hunter hahaha Someone please tell me what’s the Begin. ranking on itunes, THANKS!!!!

I’m glad we are out there asking in the stores for BEGIN., whether we need a copy or not. It shows to them there is interest, maybe even the clerks will think “hey, maybe I should check this out”. Happy BEGIN. day everyone! I saw 1 copy of BEGIN. at my local Barnes and Noble store so I bought it! My daughter thought I was crazy as I have already bought several (she doesn’t even know how many!!!) but I said that I needed lots to give as gifts! This beautiful album needs to be shared!!

I know I haven’t posted here in a while but this being Begin day I thought I’d drop by! I also hate to dive in on what could be seen as a controversial note, but I have to wonder if the poster who speculated on prejudice affecting the media’s treatment of David… Sad as that is… Like Beth said, David’s the kind of guy who can see the good in anyone. That being said though, it’s probably best to avoid speculating on David’s thoughts on hot button issues like the one that had been addressed. He’s never addressed it, he probably never will and I hope it stays that way. While we all have our views on these things, I like that in David, we have someone that can bring us all together. Just my 2 cents! I hope everyone is doing well!
I just want to thank everyone who replied with their thoughts and condolences on the passing of my dear friend. It means a lot to me and I’m very grateful. Just being able to listen to David’s beautiful music has brought comfort and peace to my heart. Thanks again my FOD family!

Linda, thanks heaps for the translation. Interesting that he is using the same wording as the last vlog for Begin. – ‘ hope we can feel his heart.’
Does he also use that wording in the liner notes?
That tells me one of two things…he either knows about the response the fans had to him using those words in his last vlog and therefore that phrase is in the front of his mind right now and that’s why it was natural to use the same wording ….or the alternative is that ‘feeling his heart’ really was truly the deep intent and crux of it all because it is a sentiment he has repeated at least twice now, albeit months apart from each other.

Beth – at this point if I could walk to So. CA. to get a cd of BEGIN I would, but it would be too long a walk from MA. I don’t understand why there are not more copies in places like Walmart, I’m not crazy about Target, so didn’t expect much. When I went to Walmart today, there were so many cds of JB, I took other peoples cds and put them in front of all of his. I hope they are still there. I guess that is enough of a rant for now. Just loved that message from David, he is so thoughtful and caring, I don’t think most people, besides us fans, know all that David does for people, charities, and he never broadcasts it, he just does it, not like a lot of celebrities who have cameras there every time the do something. I’ll end now saying BEGIN is as beautiful as David is.!!!!

I want to cry. I was told by a rep. at Sears that my CD would have gone out yesterday and I would have it by today. Now i get an Email that it’s being shipped on the 8th and estimated arrival date is Aug. 13-15.

First, abms, so sorry to hear about your dear friend. If you can find any peace in music, only David’s music will do.
I went to Walmart and could only find one copy of Begin. Hope that’s a good sign. I was looking to buying three.
So, I was going to write a big wonderful review of the cd but came to realize my pea brain does not have the vocabulary to do the cd justice. I will just say I love it and I do believe this is the best to come from David since Crush.

Hey guys….there’s good news and bad news….The bad news first…I left work early today to go to my local Walmart to check out the displays of David’s Begin and buy several copies…And…NO ONE HAD HIS ALBUM…I went to three Walmarts and two Best Buys in the Richmond, VA, suburbs and they said they didn’t have his album. The last Walmart told me that they would only have it on line and not in the stores. Then I called Barnes and Noble and they had a copy and I told them to hold me a copy. I rushed in looking for the display and there wasn’t any. They man who held the CD told me they only ordered ONE COPY!!!!! Holy Heck……What about promotion……or is Richmond, VA just BACKWARD!!!! OK, the good news….I listened to BEGIN for the first time and it is AMAZING….Daivd sounds so mature and I love the orchestral quality to the album..No more pop bubble gum for this STAR…I love, love , love, BROKEN…He is a musical genius!!!!!!….Miss Vicki

I am soooo in love with David’s BOTW and Everybody Hurts! David’s voice, the strings, and the arrangements are phenomenal! Angel is sooo divine also! True Colors is really special. I’ve never heard it sung so wonderfully, and the music and arrangement of this song is the best I’ve ever heard. The upbeat feel to it is different from what I’ve ever heard before, and David’s vocals are absolutely gorgeous!

Just dropping in to say this is the first Archie cd I’ve bought, aside from the Crush single. I just couldn’t resist this collection of songs. When I heard the snippet of BOTW I got goosebumps and knew I had to get this. I am not disappointed. My first listen to Everybody Hurts got me practically sobbing at my desk at work. BOTW is just plain EPIC and his version of SOWK is exactly the kind of music I hope he continues with when he gets back from his mission. There are so many cover songs now that I want him to sing! lol. But what’s most amazing is that his original song Broken holds its own against all these covers. It’s quite beautiful and lyrically/melodically complex. Even though its a ballad its become an ear worm! lol
Just an iTunes Update: Last I looked he was at #22 in all of iTunes! That is 100x better than I thought he’d do honestly. He’s doing great on Amazon too. I think he made it to #1 Adult Contemporary.
The one thing that annoys me is on iTunes you don’t see the whole album cover. It’s not a square its a rectangle. ???

Haven’t visit FOD lately due to flood in the Philippines, I was not able to open my laptop. I’m safe, my area doesn’t affected by flood, but I’m so sad for all the affected people, all I can do is to donate and called several charitable institutions to deliver donations to the affected area and of course to pray. I think 50% of the Philippines are affected by flood.
Jhen, glad to hear you’re okay, but I’m so sorry to hear how bad the floods are. Keeping everyone there in my prayers and I know David is thinking of you all, too.

i have no idea how many copies were sold today. i’m not expecting a high number since most stores don’t have it except for online, but i’m sure it’ll make money since not much was spent making it.
blue- did US radio station started to play Broken or not yet? I hope Broken be heard by many people because this songs is full of emotion and sensible song.

Jhen, US radio doesn’t seem to know David exists anymore unless you’re in UT. I haven’t heard him on my stations (SoCal) in the longest time. I sometimes hear him at Christmas, but I can’t recall if I did last year.

Charlotte- oh, that was very frustrating, David songs should be heard not only in Utah. I don’t how it goes in US radio station, I think the record company should pay the radio station to be able to play it ? or not neccessarily.
Sydnie- red cross have website too. But I gave to other local institution also, in my area, we have also some place to drop off our donations and they are the one who deliver it to the affected area.

Jhen, it is frustrating. Many stations do pay for play for their artists which is a big part of why David doesn’t get played. Jive didn’t do much to promo him with radio besides having him visit or be interviewed by stations. They didn’t do much to get his music played. It stinks, too, because we need more music like his on the radio. I can barely listen to top 40 anymore. It’s mostly auto-tuned junk. REAL music please.

My story of buying David cd today:
So I went to walmart hoping that they would sell his cd there. When I got to the music section and scan though the new releases and there I didn’t even have to read it because the album cover art caught my eye immediately. I was so excited! I told my brother look here it is in my hands after waiting for months. I scan around and saw that they had put his CD on the bottom section of the new releases and justin bieber on the top. I know I know what i did next was wrong for bieber but I put one of David cd’s in top of JB. I was just leaving when my brother who is 11 yrs old put another BEGIN. cd infront of another JB cd. (they had 3 stacks for JB cd)I told him to hurry up because one of the walmart employer was coming. We left but decided to come back to check again. When we came back this lady was standing infront of the new releases and she grab the BEGIN. cd that we put in front of JB cd! SUCEED! since we put BEGIN on the top she saw it otherwise maybe she would have never seen BEGIN. on the bottom. We waited and watched her like stokers to see if she took the cd and I couldn’t believe it SHE TOOK IT! end of the story. We left the new release section because the walmart employer was looking at us really suspicious haha.
Hello to anyone who is still up! This is the first chance I have had to get online for the last 5 days. I went on an awesome vacation with my extended family and I got home late Monday night to find my box of CDs from Sears had arrived while I was away! What an amazing surprise to come home to!!! Listening to all of the songs in their entirety was beyond INCREDIBLE!!! The orchestration, the tone of David’s gorgeous voice and, most of all, the emotion with which David sang each song was totally overwhelming. I am in complete awe of his talent and artistry! This CD has surpassed all of my expectations, which is incredible because my expectations were sky high!!! I can honestly say that I LOOOVE all of the songs, but Everybody Hurts takes my breath away! I can’t thank David enough for caring so much about his fans, and for working so hard to leave us such an amazing gift. I truly feel his heart in each song.
Well since some are confusing, I too decided to do my own campaign. I had my husband fill my basket with large items – stereo system, lap top, and printer – went up to an employee and ask where they had the new releases . He couldn’t find on his computer system that they were even carrying the CD. I acted surprised and said how could an album ranked #7 not be in the store…. I asked him if he could kindly help me put my iitems back on the shelf since I had to still stop at Walmart to look for the CD so I would do my shopping all at once. When I got home, I also made a few calls to inquire about it and told them the same thing! I guess I’m frustrated that David is treated differently and I won’t be a part of it.

Begin by David Archuleta: This is the fifth studio album released by the 2008 American Idol runner-up. Begin is a cover album and fans will be excited to hear his takes on several popular songs including Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love).” David’s voice is one of the best in his generation and Begin shows that every song that he touches turns to gold. Good MORNING, I am beyond happy that David is doing soo well. He has such talent, but I guess you need more of a gimmick than talent these days, I don’t listen to radio because they don’t play any of his songs. The other day I almost had a fit when I heard what one of my grandsons was listening to, I told him to turn it off, if it wouldn’t have messed up the plumbing I would have FLUSHED it because that’s where it belonged!

Let me rephrase my comment about support; I don’t mean fanbase support. We’ve done exactly what we did with TOSOD; preordered, downloaded, trended. It just boggles my mind that Begin has climbed iTunes with zero promo/zero appearances by David.
Is this the difference of being outside the Jive umbrella? Because if so, it’s kinda nice.

There was so much to do in such a short time, but I have to let the fans know how much this album means. This was definitely an album done against the odds, but done for the people who have meant so much to me, and a way to bring them on the journey I’m currently on right now to an extent. These songs have a reason behind them, and I hope that through this album you will understand better why I am out here on my mission.
I think that says it all. I love BEGIN. This album was a labor of love for his fans. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s OK. Some just don’t get David and what he is about. We here at FOD get David and enjoy being his fans. He is a special person.

I wonder if there is anybody from David’s team that we can check to see why we can not purchase BEGIN in any of the stores like Walmrt, Target, and others, who is responsible to get copies to these stores, JB and other artists don’t have that problem, It is really frustrating, I want a hard copy in my hands, have pre order from Deseret way back in June, can not get an answer as to the statis of my order, seems like a lot of people have heard from them.

Still haven’t received my cds, but been listen to BEGIN. on the repeat on my Ipod. Loving it more and more with each listen. Hoping that I get them today.
Now after listening numerous times, I’m starting to analogize the meanings to the songs, especially after the written note from David that the songs have reason behind them and would help us understand why he went on a mission.

Sorry to be a downer this morning but I saw a tweet that he said he just finished downloading Begin on Youtube. I have found that ArchieBR already made half of BEGIN in full form and people download songs for free. Sorry to continue the theme discussed yesterday about illegal downloading. I know it’s bound to happen, but the album is just out and so called a fan causes illegal download and hurts David. I know ArchieBR did the same on Forevermore. Gosh!

IDK what to think, I haven’t had a chance to listen to any (full) song yet since I have issue with US Itunes and I have to wait for my cds to arrive, and yeah I think it’s just not right to post the whole song on you tube and that’s what happen I’m sure he/she’s not the only one who did that since overhere is almost impossible to get it the same time as the US and people just cant wait and once they down load it’s kinda hard for some to go out and buy the original !!! and the downloader gave the reason loud and clear on Broken vid that she won’t take em down!!!

I think right now it looks like a “one-order-at-a-time” basis at most major retailers for artists like David who’s not under a major label….unless, like Martha said, the CD remains high on the charts for a long while….or maybe it they are besieged by many calls or requests for it?
Can’t remember where…but I read a while ago that many retailers are limiting their supply of physical CDs because the higher demand for online orders now.
There are two reasons why BEGIN. is not available in stores like his other CDs. David is no longer on a major label and stores are drastically reducing the number of CDs that they carry because people are now buying their music digitally or unfortunately, illegally downloading it.

I just got back from running errands for the office, one being WalMart, and low and behold I found 1, and yes that is 1 copy of BEGIN in JB’s slot. I looked in new releases it wasn’t there, I then looked in music and I just happened to see green behind JB’s album. There is was in all it’s glory. It is a good day. Now, this maybe good or bad. I don’t think they would have put one copy out that would have been bad, maybe they put out 10 copies and I got the last one, that would be good. I would have bought them all and then gifted them. I am going looking tonight at another WalMart.

I know not everyone here is going to agree with my comments, but I am so against people putting up entire songs on youtube (and not just David’s music)! What’s to stop me or anyone else from going to the person’s youtube channel that Grace mentioned above and downloading David’s songs? Some fans may actually purchase the actual CD, but if you can get it for FREE why bother? And for those that can’t afford it, they can request that it be gifted. I wish they would just think about what they are doing and how it affects the artist and songwriters, before they go putting David’s entire album (or anyone else) on youtube. #rantover

I actually agree abms. I won’t allow the members to share them on the FB groups I admin. What’s sad is it happened so fast. The first day when we’re trying to get sells for the CD and someone posts them. YT songs can easily be downloaded onto and mp3. Which could very well be part of why the number of people who are fans and the number of TOSOD CD’s reported to be sold just don’t match up. I would urge those who can’t afford it or can’t get it because the CD isn’t available in their country to purchase, be patient. It’s hard because we all want so badly to listen to David singing any way we can. It wouldn’t be an issue if all people did was go to YT to listen, but it doesn’t stop there. Somebody here posted a program or link where you could convert an itune download into an MP3 and send it to someone?? Something like that. If it could be done as a gifting thing, and to fans in other countries, this would be good. kimk – from what I understand, a person can get an Itunes gift card and somehow give the number off the card to someone who wants to download but maybe doesn’t have an Itunes account? Can we do this for someone who lives out of the country so they can use on their country’s Itune website? Never have done this so I am unsure.

I am willing to gift some CD’s on Itunes….but don’t know how to do this. I did this before ….with singles, but it did not count for sales until the person who was gifted downloaded DA. Some people I gifted never downloaded ( I know….who could not???) Can someone guide my steps to help this be the most help to David and fans who are waiting so eagerly??? I would love to help our international friends!!!

Hi everyone. I relayed this story in chat last night but I thought I’d bring it over here as well. I’m friends with a really awesome family out in Utah and one of the kids in the family works at a Deseret Books. He was working yesterday and a group of younger teenage girls thought he was David (I guess they don’t follow David’s career too closely lol) and insisted that he sing to prove that he wasn’t. His corworkers have apparently teased him non stop about it lol.

Illegal downloads are an unfortunate way of life for ever artist out there, not just David. I’m 100% against them but don’t see anyway to stop or prevent it from happening. The Beatles, Elvis, JB, Adele, Taylor Swift lead the highest number of illegal downloads. I’m guessing if their teams cant find a way to stop it, we wont be able to either.
When a name of someone who is illegally posting on YT is brought to a site, it gives others that are out their a window to do the same…illegally download perhaps from a source they didn’t know existed.
Sharon I have heard that others want to gift too and need it gifted to them. I think there are countries doing a gifting program. Wonder if we could make all of it into one central place. Gifters and giftees. A website or FB group, or something here on FOD.

I saw that ArchieBR deleted the comments about this on his/her videos. There are other ways other than youtube, where you can stream audio for others without the risk of being ripped.
Yeah it comes with the territory. Doesn’t mean there isn’t something that can be done to make it better even by a little.
Candy….I agree we may not be able to stop it….but if some can gift others it may help bring DA’s numbers up on Itunes. Maybe we could have a gifting party and get fans to gift another at a certain time….on ITunes. Just an idea!
