Make Saturday Memorable

stargazer lillies

Two great ideas from Fans to make the day of Jen Barry’s memorial memorable in a way that is personal to each of us.  From Facebook:

one

Love this idea!  I have to tell you that besides gerber daisies, these are my favourites as well.  You had awesome taste my sweet friend <3.  Can you image this time next year when we all share our picture of our blooming lilies?  And every year after that?  How wonderful would that be!

From   Louise Burge Perry

I was thinking it would be nice if we all changed either our profile picture or cover picture to one of Jens photos on Sat for her memorial.

Loved this idea too and so did so many others!

 Will you join us?

We’ll send out a reminder on Friday night as well.

And I collected all of Jen’s slideshows (over a dozen!!!) and gathered pictures below.  You can download directly from our site below.  How can you pick just one?

And take a look at the collection Joanie put together as well on Tuesday featuring her picture of family, her landscapes, sports pictures and many others.  We truly lost a wonderful talent.

Watch this in slideshow and see what I mean.  Please give Jen credit if you are posting elsewhere :)

Collecting My Thoughts

I heard about Jen’s passing on my way to out of town business meetings, about one hour into a 5 hour trip.  Not 5 minutes has gone by since that moment that I have not thought of her and her family.

SOD Jen Barry Jen and KariAs Kari said on her tweet, Jen was a true Archie.  She supported David unconditionally, and with enthusiasm.  She used her rediscovered talents to share pictures of David with not only his fans, but with his family as well.  And I know they loved those pictures.   Jen was a staunch supporter of David’s privacy during his mission and was not shy about displaying her opinion.  She used her renewed discovery of those artistic talents as a springboard to photograph other things.  She was proud of her work, and I admired how she invited us to vote on some of her contests.  Just as she was generous in sharing her talents with us, we returned the generosity by helping her get recognition in the art that she loved.

Jen Barry Little Drummer boy SLC

Jen Barry Little Drummer boy SLC

I got to know Jen after she sent me a slew of pictures that she printed, not really knowing me from Adam, but she just felt I might like them.  It was very early on in the American Idol tour.  Never asking for anything in return although postage to Canada is often insane.  She used to hand out advertisement cards before David’s concerts.  I sometimes would email her to see if I could use one of her protected shots from Smugmug on FOD for a post I was doing.  Always a ‘yes’.  Generous, and confident in her craft.

But I also got to know Jen as she would email me privately, and ask for an opinion on something.  Sometimes, she wanted to add a quote to a picture and was concerned about how it might be misinterpreted or whether it matched the picture.  Or she wasn’t sure about a font or placement of the quote.  Or if it should be B&W vs colour.  Sometimes she would ask an opinion on the calendars she put together for charity too, always valuing external perspective.  She was very open minded and was never overly confident that she wouldn’t consider that advice.  She was always wanting to perfect her craft, while being respectful to everyone, including David.

jen and sean 2It’s been very hard to express how much the loss of this lovely young woman has rocked me, and many of you; not only because it was Jen the Archie we loved, but it was Jen the mom and wife.  No child should lose their parent.  No person should lose their spouse.  No parent should lose their child.  I posted the quote at the top of the page because what many of us have been feeling has to do with how we regard each other ~ as part of this big, weird, wonderful, fan family (That term is Kricket’s and I use it liberally).  Like it or not, we share a common bond, and there is just something about that bond that is hard to shake.  That’s why we are happy together, sad together, why we celebrate together, and why we sometimes cry together.

The Fan Family goofing off

The Fan Family Goofing Off

Tragedy has a way of reminding us how fragile life is.  Some wonderful friends have reached out this week to reconnect during this difficult time understanding that we all need a virtual hand to hold.   We can also move forward by taking the safe driving message to heart personally, and to remind our children of that as well. Life is too incredibly precious.

We will all miss you Jen <333.

This video is simply wonderful.  What a beautiful tribute from Jen’s friend Bronwyn.  Please go leave a comment on your Youtube vid.

In memory of Jen  - *Photograph*

Still in shock over the senseless loss of my good photographer friend, I wanted to do something to remember her by, so what better way than a tribute of some of her photos, to honour her.  I’m not too familiar with these slideshow things, it’s taken me all day (& fb removed it as soon as I uploaded – hence it’s now on youtube, hoping it can stay) – but I hope that it gives her loved ones something to remember her with.

Maintenance Time

For the summer, FOD will be reducing our posting even further, taking our lead from David.  We will be posting twice per week, and occasionally only weekly.

And in order to tackle some much needed maintenance, I’ll be taking a break from writing for FOD.  My new job has been extremely demanding so much so that development of a quality post even once a week post has been difficult.  I just haven’t been able to put all my  energy into writing a good piece for you weekly, especially when material is a bit scarce ;).  With many other balls in the air, I’m not at my creative best right now ~

And I’ve also dropped the ball on the maintenance side and I’m sure many of you have observed we’ve had a little less stability over the past weeks.  With Joanie and Kalei here putting out comprehensive, informative and fun posts, the site can afford not having me as a writer, but it can’t afford going down!  We need some much needed upgrades, testing and working with our host on ‘right-sizing’ and that’s the best use of my time.

I’ll still be tweeting, responding to tweets and emails as appropriate. I’ll be back writing on Mondays in September, hopefully in time for David’s ‘tour’ to be in full swing.  Can’t wait!    In the interim, we invite guest columns. Just write us at fodfrontpage@gmail.com if you’d like to contribute.  I assure you, everyone who has provided guest posts were initially hesitant and then found it enjoyable!  What’s on your mind?  Write us!

So see you on ‘behind the scenes’!

Again…beautiful memories of Jen. I just feel so blessed that she was in the Archie-family. We are a very tight knit group and when we lose one of our own, it’s like losing a sister…brother….I believe we are bonded for life.
Will be planting a flower in her memory as well. You are so missed Jen, but you will never be forgotten.

  2. Jana OR says:

Very beautiful post. I can so relate to everything you said. Thanks, Pastel.
I too will be planting a Stargazer Lily.

Just want to say a big thank you again for all that you do here on FOD.
Thinking of Jen and her family and praying for them.

I was wondering if doing one of the “group cards” for Jen’s husband would be a good idea. Thank you FOD for all the tributes to Jen. We all know she was very special and will be greatly missed by David’s fan family. She made a difference for David and us.

Just stopped by FOD, after a “grammy gig” that lasted most of the day. Your post is lovely, MaryLou ~the tributes shared here at FOD have been so appreciated. I share the sadness that each Archie has felt over the past couple of days~ a reminder of the preciousness of life and how fleeting and unpredictable it can be. Continued prayers for Jenn’s family, especially her loving little boy. God Bless them all. ❤️

  6. Janel aka Nellie says:

Thanks for the wonderful post Pastel! Sorry you have to step back, but understandable when other things are demanding your time.
I noticed there are several pics of Jen with her camera in her hand. Like an extension of herself. I’m glad she left behind such beautiful memories for everyone, family and friends alike. Still so very sad though. I’ll be changing my FB page to one of her pics. I really like the one she took of the horses during a sunset, reflecting in the water. Wonder if I can find that one on her FB. It was in that tribute video.

  12. Anne-Marie says:

    Hey guys,
I’m trying to save to my computer some of the pics of Jen’s posted in today’s and yesterday’s posts. For some reason, it’s not letting me save just the picture, it’s saving the entire web page. I only clicked on the picture that I want to save, then clicked “save as” but it saved the entire web page. I have an i-Mac computer. I never have any problems when I’m saving to a regular PC so not sure why it’s not letting me save just the picture. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    • Ali says:

      Anne-Marie -

I was just able to save a picture from the slideshow on my Mac so hopefully this method works for you.
      1. Click on the picture you want to save from the slideshow
      2. Once the picture pops up large, right click on it and select Open Image in New Tab
      3. Go to the new tab that opened, right click on the picture and select Save Image As

      Good luck! :)

      • Anne-Marie says:

Thanks Ali. Unfortunately, my mouse is an Apple iMac mouse that doesn’t have a right click/left click option. It’s just one click and when I click on the pic and then click again, it just goes back to the front page.

  13. Anne-Marie says:

BTW, the pictures I’m having trouble saving are the ones from the slide show. I tried on my father’s PC but it won’t let me save because it’s web-based? I was able to save pics that were just posted on the front page. (not in the slide show). Thanks!

    • Pastel says:

Hi Anne-Marie. Let me see if there is an issue on the PC. If there is, I can try to import them into photobucket for you

      • Anne-Marie says:

Thanks ML! I chose 2 pics that were posted on the front page to download and then changed my FB cover pic and profile pic to those pics in Jenn’s memory. :)

    https://www.saltskyutah.com/2015/07/10/a-dance-to-remember/

A couple’s first dance can be a pleasure to plan, or it can give you great anxiety. You might not want to do a sexy tango, but you also don’t want to sway back and forth for 2 minutes like a couple of high schoolers. It’s a tough road to cross for many people, but I’m here to tell you that it can be fun and can kick off your wedding reception in the best way.

The first dance is a tradition that dates back to the royals, the guest of honor would start off the night with a dance before all the guests joined in.
If you need a little encouragement or direction on choreographing the best dance for your wedding, I would love to contribute to your special day. Contact me at saltskyutah@gmail.com

Remember, life is always better when you dance!
On your wedding day, the guests are there to honor your marriage and celebrate with you. Sharing a dance together will make them feel like they are supporting the happy couple that loves each other.

I had a great opportunity recently to choreograph a beautiful couple’s first dance. Rich & Mietra weren’t sure what they were going to do, but they were sure they wanted a dance. I taught them a simple dance that made them feel comfortable and exited to perform. Not only was their dance beautiful but they had DAVID ARCHULETA sing live! It all came together beautifully and I was honored to be a part of it.

David Archuleta Guest Stars at BYU Homecoming Spectacular
    http://mormonmusic.org/2015/07/09/david-archuleta-guest-stars-at-byu-homecoming-spectacular/

Prior to his two-year full-time mission in Chile for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, singer-songwriter and actor, David James Archuleta, was wowing audiences across the nation and around the globe with his concerts and special guest appearances. However, after returning home from his mission, David has made the decision to slow things down a bit and re-prioritize his life. That does not mean that he has abandoned being the class performer that he is in his own right, but rather, partly as a result of his mission, he now has a fresh outlook on life.

Since returning home he has been keeping busy writing songs for an upcoming CD release, performing for the troops overseas, speaking at Firesides, participating in a myriad of other projects to include being a guest speaker and artist at RootsTech 2015, and in 2014, he recorded the title track, “Glorious,” for the movie “Meet the Mormons.”

A quote from his book “David Archuleta, Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance,” probably best describes his new approach to performing and life in general. In his own words he says:
Once you let yourself believe that you’ve gotten to the top, you’ve lost sight of the real goal. Which is to keep climbing no matter what. And by climbing, I don’t mean trying to outdo yourself with even more accomplishments. Instead, what I mean is that just when we think we have done something well, we should start looking at the other areas of our lives that need attention.
Yes, I’ve worked hard; and yes, I may have achieved a certain level of success-but I’m very clear about the fact that none of it would be worth it without doing the things that keep me close to God.

The Music Plays on – BYU Spectacular
David ArchuletaOn 8 and 9 October 2015, David will be performing as the featured guest artist at BYU Spectacular, a live concert held at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah in conjunction with the Homecoming Week celebrations. Tickets for his performance will go on sale on Monday, 13 July and can be purchased at the BYU Ticket Office in the Harris Fine Arts Center or Marriott Center, by phone at 801.422.2981 or by visiting BYUTickets.com.

The theme of the BYU Spectacular is “Make Your Mark” and will also feature: Vocal Point, Young Ambassadors, Cougarettes, Ballroom Dance Company, Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Women’s Chorus and Synthesis.

Some of David’s fans may be disappointed that he is not producing music at the rate that he once did, but they can be assured that music is in his blood, and he will always “make his mark” by giving his audiences the best performance that he can possibly give. Speaking of music, David stated in his book:
So as I think back on it now, I think it is safe to say that music is something you both hear and feel. I also realize that feelings change frequently and that for the most part, they are not a constant. They change from high to low, happy to sad, content to ecstatic and back down again. Not all music has the same purpose, but most music makes you feel “something.”
