The following is being typed during the middle of a Computer Science class. I’m bored. (I hope I don’t get caught!)

Here’s proof that David can be applied to any subject…no, seriously. So far I’ve succeeded in doing so in English, Biology, French, Physics and now CompSci. By the way, if you’re wondering how I managed to combine a teen idol and the study of living organisms, the answer is simple. I named my Drosophilus flies after him. I said simple, not sane.

Isn’t that just adorable? My Biology teacher didn’t think so, but what does he know?

I have given in to the madness that is XM. After listening to my first countdown last night at midnight and witnessing a #5 ALTNOY spot, I have become addicted. I do that…especially with things related to a certain David Archuleta. Said madness drove me to listen to the 3 a.m. countdown (#18) AND the 6 a.m. one (though I missed ALTNOY…had to go to school, boo). There’s something to say about a popular station that spins ALTNOY about twice every 3 hours. I must say, David probably gets more shout outs from callers than any other artist.

Like this afternoon. A woman called in and told her story about how her young daughter loves David and makes them all listen to him. CUTE! Just a few minutes ago another fan called in to vote, and guess what?! The DJ asked her whether she was from FANSOFDAVID.COM!! They know all about us. Fran is sooooo happy…

Update! He’s #9 at 9 p.m. tonight! XM spins FTW! By the way, my internet died just as they were about to play ALTNOY. Clearly my computer agrees with me that he should have been #1. VOTE VOTE VOTE!!

Update! They’re playing CRUSH on XM…go figure. That’s kind of cool because they’re spinning goodie oldies and Crush is beng considered one.

Review: Archuleta wins over young fans

Singer David Archuleta has proven that being a runner-up on “American Idol” can be as lucrative as winning the show. Archuleta, who placed second in the 2008 contest, has sold more than 600,000 copies of his post-”Idol,” self-titled album, and more than 1.6 million copies of his single, “Crush,” in the United States.

Archuleta, along with past “Idol” runners-up Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson, are among those artists who have succeeded despite their losses. And the sold-out crowd made mostly of shrieking teen girls (and their parents) Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort indicate Archuleta won’t fade too soon.

I overheard one teen girl on the way in say her “heart was beating so fast.” Homemade signs saying things like “Touch My Hand David,” in reference to a song of his, were in abundance. Indeed, it seemed like it was a first-concert experience for a lot of the audience, who shrieked insanely every time a curtain moved or a roadie walked across the stage before the show. And they shrieked almost as loud for opener Lesley Roy, an Irish singer who played indistinct, but somewhat edgy garage rock with her band. But the reaction is understandable. Archuleta is one of the new teen idols, and history shows that idols’ cuddly factors usually trump their artistic merit and shelf life.

In his 80-minute set, padded a bit with a medley of songs like U2’s “One” and Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours,” Archuleta pranced around the stage, shook hands with his fans and reacted a bit sheepishly to the Beatlemania-esque screams from the crowd. After opening with the hooky, piano-based “Touch My Hand,” Archuleta soon issued a squash warning, asking his fans to be mindful of the crush of people up front.

While Archuleta had no fewer than 70 people’s hands in the making of his first album, including producers, songwriters, musicians and representatives, he is a good singer, and if a songwriting team is feeding him decent songs, there’s no reason he won’t succeed. The 18-year-old has been singing since he was 6 and competed on “Star Search” at 12, so he’s got vocal experience. And he used it in his show, as I’m pretty sure he didn’t hit a bad note all night. Occasionally he would get behind a piano to accompany himself. His competent band on guitar, bass, drums and keyboards mostly stayed in the shadows, but provided a solid backbeat and backing vocals.

I’m no expert on the Archuleta song catalog, but I am pretty sure he played every song on the album, including extras he mentioned were from the Wal-Mart and iTunes Deluxe versions of the album. While Archuleta wrote almost none of the songs on his album, one that he did write and perform with his guitarist, “Zero Gravity,” shows some writing promise.

Archuleta’s songs are middle-of-the-road pop songs. Some are good. Some start to sound very much alike after an hour. He’s about as dangerous as a glass of warm milk. But I’m not his target audience. The young fans he’s courting like him very much. I will say this: It was the shortest beer line I’ve ever had to stand in at a concert.

Nikki’s Reno Fan Story and Pictures

After a long 3 and a half hour drive I arrived at the Grand Sierra Resort at around 1 PM and the line was already outside of the door. A friend from facebook was saving me a spot up front but this older lady got real mad at me and i guess saving a spot wasnt allowed so i was booted outside. I called Janet from FOD since I knew she was going to Reno as well so it turns out she was a few feet from me Also Jerry, Kalei & Angela were there as well. I think that was around 2 or 2:30 and so we waited there and talked untill we went inside at about 5. We finally got moving at 7 into the theater, luckly for us we were able to be in the pit even though i thought we were so far back in line. We were about 3 or 4 rows from the stage! Once David came out about 9, the entire venue went insane and i started being shoved closer to the stage! He started off by singing Touch my Hand and during that song he came over toward us and if i were a few inches to the left i would have touched his hand! After that he sang most of the songs from his album, and a medley of other songs like I’m Yours and Selena’s “como la flor”. He sang so beautifully and it was such an amazing experience hearing him sing live again. The other time was the idol tour but we had him for a longer period of time. Anyway I better post this its getting pretty long already. -Nikki

Random Fran-ish Randomness of the Day!

Seeing as how I’m lacking in posting material some nights, I’d thought I’d do one of these every once in a while and force you all to sit through my Archu-ramblings. Like today. I somehow managed to convince my English teacher that there’s something not quite right about me, my friend is worried over my mental health, and my classmates are wondering if I was ever sane to begin with. I’m writing my AP English Language research paper on David! OK, so it’s about him in a sort of indirect kind of way…If I had titled my paper “The Life and Times of David Archuleta” my teacher would have probably given it an immediate failing grade due to her incapacity to read it while rolling her eyes. So my topic is something along the lines of “Is American Idol really a strong platform for budding music artists?” My research sources are due tomorrow and half of THOSE have David Archuleta in their titles…what can I say? Writing about David is never boring…

It’s Going to be Hard to Top This Promotion Story…

I did it!!! Tricia and I went to the radio station and hand delivered the signed cd to my favorite DJ on mix 107.9 kvly!!! He said they want to do a SPECIAL promotion with it!!! They said they are working on some things and would like to get David here for a meet and greet. The only problem is in about 3 weeks I will be leaving the area! I will be in driving distance for another 6 weeks so if they do it before he goes to Asia or before he goes to the UK I can go!! You know what, I am just happy I could do something to help David!! I told them it is for all thier support . ( Actually I told them I am the crazy lady that calls them all the time!! And he knew who I was!) They said they would continue playing David’s songs!! We also told them that we have posted thier website on our fansite and people are now visiting it so don’t be shy…request if you want!!
