Background Information about “Falling”

Background story about “Falling” from iluvlife:
Just to put to rest the speculation concerning this song, I have some insights that I think are important for you all to be aware of. First, the story about this song is that it is about someone else, not him personally. He had been going through a phase where he just didn’t know what to write about although he was encouraged to practice and experiment with writing from the very first meetings with people in the record business. He would sing his own melodies and such, but just couldn’t come up with a complete song and especially felt inadequate towards lyrics. His dad kept trying to encourage him to try even if it didn’t sound perfect to him, as it was all part of the learning process and he needed to exercise his abilitities so in the future it would be easier for him. When they met with the first record labels back when he was 11 (season 1 finale time period), they all said that he should learn to play an instrument (or 2) and also learn how to write songs because that was what a true artist does.
When he was 14, he had already been through Star Search and was going through that difficult time of the vocal paralysis when he wasn’t sure how long it would be before he might be able to sing again, and he still had yet to write a complete song with both melody, lyrics, chords, etc. This was the first song he ever wrote and as such, is a very important representation of who he is as an artist and is an incredible example of what I think will come in the future when he has some more influence with the label to do more of his own music. I can imagine it being extremely difficult for him and his dad to try and convince the label that they should put songs by David ahead of ones written by superstar songwriters, and also can imagine how timid David is to insist on things that are possibly in his best interest but he doesn’t want to rock the boat, nor does his Dad.
The story of Falling was based on an actual tragedy of a relative of a relative, not a direct relative of David’s, but a young 21 year old girl who had committed suicide at a family gathering. He was very moved and upset that someone could feel so depressed that they would be willing to carry out ending their own life, and as morbid as this sounds, it was also the catalyst that motivated him to come up with his first complete song. He just felt inspired to try and imagine the feelings she must have been going through, so to clarify, this is not autobiographical but instead is an attempt to try and understand and feel what someone contemplating their own worth must have felt like. To me it is a genius lyric, I have been one of the lucky ones to have heard the whole thing. You will all be totally amazed at the word choices and depth of this song both lyrically and musically.
I personally feel this is the most important song on the entire album to show who David is as an artist, and the beautiful arrangement was done under the direction of his dad and some of his dad’s musician friends in Utah. From what I understand, when they were in Utah for a few days, they went and recorded it one day live with the piano person, then a couple of days later after getting the track completed, his dad stayed up til like 3 in the morning with the mixer person and one of the producers to make sure they got it all right. Jeff was very particular about all the little nuances that needed to be in this one as it was the one song that would be totally David on the album and he wanted it to be just right so they spent hours tweeking things that the producers didn’t originally hear or understand about the feeling that needed to be conveyed through the song. The producer who played the keyboards and did the string arrangement during the bridge was the person who wrote the song “Prayer of the Children” which is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, IMHO… It is performed a lot by choral and a capella groups and is always a very solemn song as it also has a very profound background and meaning.
Anyway, just wanted to clear that all up. You will notice an interesting twist at the end of the song as well. More to come once it is released…….

David Archuleta has a lovely, foggy R&B voice out of scale with his small body and, as many 10-year-old girls know, he came in second in May behind David Cook on “American Idol.” That he lost gives his first album a better story line. Could he have retained so much innocence as the winner?
Innocence, in pop, is a form of boldness: the powerful gesture of putting faith in not knowing. It’s old news in record-making, but the trick is in how far to push it and in finding music that can stand up to it. The crinkly-eyed Mr. Archuleta, a pudding of tongue-tied respect as opposed to the straight-shooting Mr. Cook, is a virtuoso of that gesture, and part of his persona on this album is that he may not even know it.He doesn’t mope; he just smiles in wistful acknowledgment of the eternal mystery of everything. The love stories on “David Archuleta” are all sort of subliteral. He can only trust good omens and kind eyes.
He’s a guy who gives the impression that he might not have a drink when he turns 21, three years and a month from now. It sounds strange when he sings “baby”; but soon enough (in Robbie Williams’s “Angels”) he’s extolling someone’s protection, love and affection, and then that someone is not a person but an angel. As for human relations, he is as earnest as it gets. In “Touch My Hand,” he looks out into the adoring crowd and doesn’t think about royalties; he sees “the sparkle of a million flashlights,” but only one face. “Never knew what the song was about,” he sings. “But suddenly now I do.” Gosh!
But what he has to climb over to get to that face. His life is like a series of dream frustrations: he’s separated from his love by walls and locks and roadblocks (“Barriers”); he’s losing strength and needs her to hold on (“My Hands”); he also needs her so he can be set free from himself (“You Can”).
The music, made by many producers and songwriters, averages out different forms of radio-format blandness, with tinges of Coldplay and Shania Twain, and a few dollops of good writing: “Don’t Let Go,” co-written and co-produced by the former ’N Sync singer J C Chasez; and “Crush.” But the persona remains intact, ready for more. “Show me that good things come to those who wait,” Mr. Archuleta sings at the end of “You Can.” He sounds as lost as ever, yet this is a mark of absolute assurance.

Astrid – The review taken as whole, IMO, coming from the NYT – is a THUMBS UP! They are just too “cool for school” to flat out say it… you have to read between a lotta lines in most of their reviews….. that NY bite and snark tries to cover up a whole lotta if not love, then big LIKE! A thick skin is needed to endure this whole review business… a good review or bad review will not make a break anyone’s career – most people don’t base their listening or buying decisions on a review… Many of the most revered and legendary artists in music past and current have had to endure the same slings and arrows… gotta take it in stride, and keep on pushing….. I let my ears decide what is pleasing or not to me – no speaking for anyone else

I know i haven’t posted lately but i just wanted everyone to know i have been voting my little bootie off like no other. I was hurt to find David wasn’t #1, i felt i let him down and that feeling is not very good. David deserves to be on top.
I lurked and read about Cook’s fan, what they are saying. My heart is aching knowing some of Cook’s fans can be soo rude, if only Cook knew what they are saying.
Anywho i love most of the reviews about our David and i know in my heart he will do fine but i wish all the negetivity would just stop, who needs it.
I have to go the my other job now(Yuke!!) i will be bacl later to do more voting.

I knew it would be a good review when they referred to David’s “foggy” sounding R&B inflected voice…. Any of you here remember and have love for Mel Torme? I do, and think he was one of the best pop and jazz vocalists who ever picked up a mic… his nickname from music lovers was/is “The Velvet Fog”…… no one did sexy, smoky vocal tone like Mel…. I could be off base in my opinion, but Fog was the trigger word that caused me to pay attention to this one… I think the NYT is nicknamed the Grey Lady… and we know how hard it is for a Lady to resist David

So, don’t worry about that jerk from the Herald. Tomorrow is David’s Day and we should just enjoy it!
David has always gotten beat up in the Massachusetts media as Mass. is very much a rock state. (lots of Cookie fans here) I wouldn’t worry about it- some places just aren’t going to “get” David and that’s their loss. Sometimes I’m a tad ashamed to admit I live in Mass. as we are not known to be warmest, friendliest folks on earth. I just glad I do “get” David, and that I can appreciate his awesomeness with all of you.

Ultimately it is up to us to decide David’s success not some insignificant critic who’s
biased opinions mean nothing! We will make the ablum successful because it deserves
to be. These negative reviews should only motivate us even more to support

It’s more a point of pride for some artists and the fans to see their feelings or thoughts about an artists material validated in print… My impression of David was formed long ago, and is indelibly etched in my mind and heart… no review – good or bad, can shake it, or cause me to ever doubt that I picked a winner…. and I betcha millions of us feel that same way

It’s a wonderful feeling knowing he has fulfilled one of his dreams and you can only feel proud of his accomplishments. Even thou I have purchased already his CD I can’t wait for tomorrow to purchase more at Wal-Mart. I want to feel that RUSH again…

Good morning everyone! I was on my way to work and caught the end of Crush on the radio…the DJ’s were talking afterwards about the album release and said that the next single would be “Angels”…(there seems to be a lot of confusion about what the next single will be). Then they started talking about Robbie Williams being gay and whether David was gay (arrrgggghhh)..the female DJ, bless her heart, stood up for David and said, no, he’s just young and still dealing with the fact that every girl wants to be his girlfriend. She said he’s probably like “oh my gosh!” ha, ha, she gets him!

I posted this on the other thread this morning before I realized there was a new thread (always late to the party, that’s me) so I’m reposting it here.
Good morning everyone! Just read some of the reviews and one thing stood out…these critics have no idea who David’s fanbase is…they think they are all 10 years old! I guess they need to check out FOD, right ladies? I, too, could care less what the reviews say…obviously David is young and innocent and his album reflects that…and obviously his target audience right now is young also. But as another fan commented, I’m here for the long haul. David’s music career is in it’s infancy…it will continue to grow and develop…and just like I watched my children take their first wobbly steps and eventually begin to run, I will be there for David, along with all his other fans, encouraging and praising him as he finds his “feet”. That being said, I think his debut album is amazing and has something for everyone…the critics can be negative all they want, but the sales will speak for themselves. And as I said before, money talks and bs walks.

Good morning all. I saw David in Fox Dallas…. can anyone tell me if he has already been on on Fox Utah?
I just realized that tomorrow is Veteran’s Day…so there will be no mail, right? So, all orders that are coming through the mail won’t be delivered until Wednesday I guess. I have one coming from Amazon and one from Wal-Mart..however, I’m buying 5 more at Wal-Mart at midnight..but still it’s kinda a bummer that the deliveries won’t be here till Wednesday. If you had told me before the seventh season of American Idol began that my favorite contestant would be a guy who’s younger than me, I would have laughed in your face. But as it turns out, David Archuleta’s age & heartthrob image are very deceiving. The purity and strength of his voice are not only far beyond his years, but extremely rare in any male singer. David Archuleta had me on his side the entirety of Idol’s last season, so it goes without saying that I was really anticipating this album. Thankfully (& in no way to my surprise), David delivers on his self-titled debut album like only he can.
David Archuleta starts off with first single “Crush,” which blew me away at first listen & continues to light up the airwaves as one of the best songs currently at radio. Second single “Touch My Hand” follows & has a great feel to it that is just different enough from, yet similar to its predecessor that it should be successful as well. David continues his genius with “Barriers” & “My Hands,” the latter of which has a “Crush” feel, but includes an even better musical structure.
My personal favorite track is “A Little Too Not Over You,” the chorus from which will turn you into a puddle of sludge the first time you hear it. David abandons the big sound of the previous tracks with “You Can,” a beautiful acoustic song that is one of those vocal displays we were all hoping would be included on this album. “Running” is another of my favorites–even if they are difficult to pick out. The track that follows, “Desperate,” has some of the more intriguing lyrical content on the record.
“To Be With You” is a controlled piano ballad that is absolutely gorgeous. The enjoyable “Don’t Let Go” is then followed by “Your Eyes Don’t Lie.” Now, David Archuleta is lucky he is who he is because if I heard the beginning of this song & it was by almost anyone else, I would have been too scared to continue. Although it starts out sounding a bit country, David pulls off the song really well. The album is wrapped up with a great new recording of “Angels.”
David Archuleta is the perfect blend of radio-friendly tunes & actual talent that I’ve personally been dying for. I am so glad David found a contemporary recording sound that works well for him. For what it’s worth, this album is easily my favorite from any Idol alumni, which shouldn’t surprise any of my loyal readers. David Archuleta is such a talented guy & his debut album displays that talent perfectly.

I am so glad to be able to hear the insite into why David wrote one of his songs. I wish we could no the story behind all of Davids songs. You know he has a message behind all of them. His thoughts on all his songs would be a great gift to any fan.
I am so excited about Davids album coming out YEAH! I was able to go to the pro of David album on Youtube and download it onto the Front of my Facebook account to try to get more people to want to buy YEAH new fan soon i hope.

He wouldn’t say that about his involvement unless he was really a big part of it all, ya know what I mean? And I never doubted that most of these cowritten songs were mainly David.

My daughter and my son and their spouses went out for dinner the other night!!! My husband and I babysat the 4 granchildren, and watched Crush on Leno then we all got instruments…2 guitars, keyboard, and drums, and sang Crush together!!! My grandson was listening to a childrens music channel, and heard Crush and ran upstairs to tell his parents! He was so excited!!!
My daughter said that while they were having dinner that my son brought up the fact about me being so “into” David Archuleta!!! She said that she put him in his place and stuck up for me!!!

I used to post, but have only lurked for months. I just had to jump on and share in everyone’s enthusiasm. I want to say how incredibly impressed I am with David’s fans. Almost a year running and the momentum of fan support hasn’t ceased, but only gotten stronger. Way to go everybody!!! The excitement is really heartwarming. I get chills. I can’t even imagine what David thinks about it all. I can’t even express how proud I am of his success and I love that he’s remained true to himself throughout it all. Even though I lurk, like all of you I participate in the daily polls and sharing the wonder that is David Archuleta with anyone who will listen to me. LOL This is only the beginning of his trek to superstardom.

I woke up with the song “Tomorrow” in my head. I can’t wait for tomorrow. What an amazing day for David, his family and all of his fans. I can’t help but to remember the journey David has been on and he has taken us along with him.

#291 GMAX4: Sometimes I think that we Moms hurt, rather than help, our grown kids “getting” David. They have this image of good ole’ Mom…you know, the one who dons her apron and prepares great Sunday dinners, who bakes Christmas cookies and goodies for both them and their kids. The stable, dependable motherly type Mom. Then along comes David Archuleta and they see Mom change into a giddy, giggling, 17yo groupie. All we want to think, talk and listen to is this 17yo young man from AI. They admit that David has a great voice and that his album is pretty good..but to them it’s just music. Nothing more, nothing less. To us, David is part of us. That’s what they don’t understand.

#291 GMAX4, everyone in my family is getting a copy of David’s CD… this CD is amazing.. every song…every last one of them… amazing… My 16 year old son now wants to go to David’s concert..he watched the Leno performance and I said, “When David tours, do want to go to the concert?” and he goes….’Yes!!’ He was amazed at David and his band…now this is something..my Metalica guitar playing son… now a David fan…(I think he secretly liked Crush, but just wouldn’t say) but hearing the more rock vibe to Crush…well that was the ticket…My mom’s fav. song (so far) is “Your Eyes Dont Lie” my dad’s…well, all of them that he heard so far… my older sister…Your Eyes Don’t Lie”… her boyfriend…”Desperate”…. and they have not even heard all the songs yet…. What a breakthru….persistence pays off….
And yesterday, I finally was able to get an 8X10 pic of David holding up the sign for my mom that said…”Yes, JoAnn you can adopt me”…. WELL….. let me tell you how impressed the family was with that…it is the first time they all saw the pic…. They could not believe that David did that for her and me…. David special ?? You better believe he is…!! They are starting to understand my complete adoration for him… mom and dad always knew, they love David… siblings, not so much..but they do now
My younger sister even saved all the Sunday Paper ads for me…. she said, looks what’s in the ads…(we were all together yesterday for the Steeler’s game) and it’s David’s CD… I will not hold back on my ODD… I feel if you don’t accept it…. that is your problem and not mine… but let me tell you, the # of tickets I will need for when David tours, is growing and growing…

#318 cmaecy: I had a small “conflict” with my daughter this weekend regarding David. I’m going to be picking up her 17yo daughter early Tuesday morning for an “Archuleta” day. She went with me to meet him in Seattle, so it’s just natural that I would want to spend time with her on that very special day. Anyway…my daughter put her foot down and told me that Kristyl couldn’t go with me unless I took her 6yo little brother too. He’s such a little cutey and I know he loves his Grandma, but he’s not the least bit interested in David.
Now..I’m really quick to anger, but just as quick to cool down…lucky for all of us. I had to really bite my tounge to keep from telling her what I thought of her dictating to me any rules regardning spending time with my grand-daughter. I wonder what she’s going to do when Kristyl turns 18 in January. Anyway, I came up with a compromise…I’m going to go pick up my grandson today and spend some time with him…take him to breakfast then maybe come back to the house and watch Nemo with him. Of course, he has ADD so that probably won’t last long…LOL.

Wendy: I just read you post #316. I am in the same boat. My home computer crashed over the weekend. I cried knowing that I would not be able to participate in tonight’s fun celebrating David’s album. I actually thought about coming back to my office later tonight. I don’t know what I will do. Of all the times for the computer to die, it has to be NOW?
Roxanne – yes, the dinner. Why am I nervous? haha I guess I’m weird.

Hi everyone. I know that they were meeting at the Sandy Wal-mart at 10:30 am. Fox 13 is filming for the 11 am news. Richard is going to be talking about the contest for the high schools and I think it is just a way to “get the party started”.
I need to head over to the tire store here shortly. I was going to be in Sandy this morning. Sigh.

Don’t know if it’s true but I’ve heard that if you buy more than one at a time, have the clerk scan them separately rather than scanning one and multiplying it by however many you’re buying. If people are planning on buying more than one, it also may be best to spread it out between stores, or times. Buy 3 at Wal-Mart. Go back an hour later and buy 3 more. Sounds like a lot of work, but if they’re really worried, they could do that.
Just take a cue to be on the safe side

OR- call your children’s school…Ask if there’s a way you could check out a laptop for the night! Don’t your kids have big projects they need to work on

My son reacted the same way when I became a Tiger Woods fan ( and he is an avid golfer)! I am not about to give this up because of any problems he has with it! He will just have to deal with it! I won’t throw it in his face, but will not hide it either!!! I think he has totally made up his mind without even listening to his music!!! That’s what’s so irritating!!! Urghhh! Oh my gosh! I just called my Wal-Mart to see what time David’s album will be put out on the shelves and she said 8 o’clock in the morning! That’s awful! I have to be at work at 8 o’clock for gosh sakes. Oh, this is not good..not good at all. I need that thing BEFORE I come to work!! I’m so upset. wahhhh
Watching the Good Day Utah video, I love when David opens his eyes wide and lifts his eyebrows and when he smiles that little “mmm” smile of his… Oh heck, I just love all his expressions.
