Wow.
Dapo Torimiro is humble, grounded in faith and family, a little shy, feels like he expresses himself best through his music, and he’s an incredibly gifted musician. Does he sound like anyone you know? I believe that Dapo and David may be spiritual twins.
We just may have to do this every Thursday.
First, thank you so much to Dapo Torimiro for chatting with us last night! We are honored to be the host for Dapo’s first chat ever!
Thank you to Lisa Murray who helped me to set this all up and got Dapo all connected with the (evil) BlogTV, and thanks to the fans who attended!
Dapo answered questions (we respected his stand on not answering any questions relating to studio work), played the piano, sang, and played the guitar for us! And let me just say, Dapo Torimiro is the real deal. He has been described as a mash-up of Sting/Seal/Stevie Wonder, but honestly, he has a sound all his own. An incredible multi-instrumentalist!
Dapo had some insightful things to say about David:
- Dapo feels that music is the “freedom to express what is inside of me,” and in working with David, he recognizes this same characteristic.
- Dapo described David in five words: “Incredibly talented, pure, honest, compassionate (that comes through his voice and music) and very dedicated to his craft.”
- David had a lot of fun at the Grammy party–dancing, laughing, hugging. And no, he wasn’t shy!
- In terms of how David compares to other artists that Dapo has worked with in regard to vocal prowess and general artistry, Dapo had this to say: “David is right up there with the best of them. There’s a purity about him that I cannot describe. It’s just amazing.”
- Dapo thought “Desperate” was incredible!
- David’s most unique quality as an artist is his purity. “If an artist can take words from the page and make it touch you and give you goosebumps when you listen to him, that’s priceless, because someone like that can help you transcend what you’re going through in the moment and take it to the place you want to be. That purity comes through his voice and performances.”
- The first time Dapo heard David sing, he was “completely blown away.”
- When I mentioned that David is firmly grounded by faith, family and friends, Dapo said “Those are the exact things that keep me grounded.”

Harmonies for Haiti
Harmonies For Haiti, which connects the youth with helping the relief efforts in Haiti, took place at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles. This concert–in which all donations go to the Red Cross–was organized by Chelsea Staub, an actress on Disney Channel’s Jonas. Over $8,000 has been raised so far.
David’s pal Benton Paul performed, and David was on hand to watch! No videos as of yet; hopefully some will surface!

#13 Candy: I feel really bad for those who are locked into this horrible weather this winter. Makes me grateful for where I live.
Looks like the Seattle area is in for 5 more days of soggy weather but the long range forecast says we may be heading into spring-like weather by next Thursday. Sunny with highs near 60. That would be sweet!
If that happens, I’m going to pack me a lunch and go spend some time on the dock soaking up the salt air and sunshine.

Candy ~ Today is my first day back to work since Tuesday. The major roads are pretty good. Lots of side roads still need plowing though. The big problem is the high piles of snow which make it extremely difficult to see around corners when driving. How are things your way?

3. Tom – fabulous post on the other thread. I also feel that Davd may have been a little hindered in the past because of the ‘kid’ reputation AI seemed to cultivate for him in the media. I think now that people are starting to notice the ‘all grown up David’ (ie, all the comments regarding his performance with Jordin recently) the older set (25+) might be more willing to give him a go as a serious artist. And hopefully that would expand his fan base.

I’m still digesting David’s radio interview. I love how he was allowed to ramble until he finally came out with what he wanted to say. So many juicy tidbits of information. The melody speaks to him before the lyrics, he’s allowed to just “be” when he’s involved with the writing process, he wants to be honest with himself and everyone else.
The more I learn about him, the more I respect him and feel connected.

ABMS- Normal is anything but normal, like you main roads are fine, but side roads leave a lot to be desired. The thoughts of getting more snow make me shudder. Candy ~ The snow mounds are just incredible. I had a little trouble getting out of my driveway this morning trying to see around them. There is just no where to put the snow. You have to keep shoveling it on top of the existing piles. I think when the snow has finally melted I am going to get down and kiss the ground haha. I think I may have to wait until spring to do that.

I agree that the 2rd album usually does less than the first. In David’s case there are a few things that I think might help change that for him. First, a changing misconception of him and his music. He was in a tough spot when he left Idol. He was known on the show as shy, not a very good communicator, and to be honest, not a great stage presence. (I know many of you disagree, but it was a perception that many had) However, that has changed drastically over the last year. It’s easy to see the change in him and this recent duet with Jordin proves to many that he is a different performer from AI. Second, Crush. While it was (in general) a teenage pop song, it took off for people of all ages and received a lot of air time, not to mention sales. This helped confirm to naysayers that he was going to be a presence in the music biz, like it or not. Third, it’s David. He has gained a lot of fans just from his personality and people getting to know him. His is easy to like and hard to hate. Plus he can sing with the best of them, and even people who don’t like him admit he can sing better than most. So why do I think he will sell more? David is growing, as an artist and as a person. Many new artist stay the same and find it hard to let their music grow. We have not seen the “true” David yet. I really believe he will keep getting better and better as the years go by. This is plain for everyone to see and I think they will. He is not the same kid that was on AI, he is growing into a bona fide star that will keep rising and the music world knows it. Of course it is all about the first single. If you can get a hit out there where people are interested in you then your album will probably do well. We will have to see what single they put out and how it is received in the general public, but I think Jive will do the right thing and hopefully let David have a say in which
one should be it. He after all knows what is best for him. Just my thoughts…

Tom ~ That was an EXCELLENT post. Love your comments. Funny, just yesterday I was watching some old clips of David on AI and it is astonishing to see just how much he has grown as a performer since then. All one has to do is look at the No Air video or Contigo En La Distancia from the ALMA awards. It makes me even more excited to see what comes next.

David should be popular in order to sell a lot of CDs & perform in many events. See, David is popular in our eyes because we hunt for everything about him (It’s like David’s world), but not everyone does………..
I know you can find his songs on the internet or Itunes or CDs, but the radios & TV and some media keep the songs & the singers popular.
how are we going to solve the problem that the radio stations & some media are upset at DA’s fans & they don’t play his music & support him. Imagine David & the writers put a lot of work & time into these music & never get played on the radios. (bad dream)
I always dream that I could turn the time back to when David was very popular & the radios played his songs & they were never upset at DA’s fans that requested his songs too much. They stopped playing his music. IT IS LIKE DAVID GOT HURT BY HIS OWN FANS. I wish that never happened badly………

When I went to DD’s summer tour, a lot of young people loved David but they didn’t sing or dance along with David. They did with Demi. They didn’t remember his songs or words. Only if they remembered, they would enjoy his shows very much.
When I listen to DA’s music & watch his vids, (some are very low viewers) I’m very sad that many people have never heard or saw this talented handsome young man’s performances. I wish they open their eyes & ears & hearts to know more about David.

Been busy busy this week at work so I’ve not had much down time. Today is a pretty peaceful Friday though so I thought I’d pop on and see how my friends were doing.
So nice to hear what Dapo had to say in the chat last night. I share all of his opinions on David — especially about the purity of David’s voice. Have never heard anything like it and suspect that nothing will ever rival it for me.

55/ta-Im not upset with anything you have said, I hope you dont mind though if I disagree with part of it. I dont think David was hurt by his fans, on the radio or any other way. His songs, had run the course of time, and he hasnt had anything released in a while. I do agree however that not everyone is as aware of David as his loyal fans are, it always surprises me when people say “OH I thought he was a one hit wonder”. Well he isnt, they just dont follow his every move like we do. It will however be up to Jive and Azoff to get him back in the public eye when the next cd is released and do it with gusto. They can’t bank on loyal fans for sales, they need to do their part too.

Love that David is still being mentioned so much with this years American Idols. I was hoping he wasn’t being forgotten. He needs to stay on everyone’s mind and not be overshadowed by new Idols. I’d like to see him having the same fame that Adam Lambert seems to be achieving without doing all that outrageous stuff Adam is into. What a shame that that’s what it seems to take to make people famous. I hope that his new album comes out soon and that the book he’s writing and the album will get him a lot of TV appearances. That’s what he’s lacking, I think. Wish he would have been with the group of famous singers doing the Michael Jackson song, especially since he said so many kind things about Jackson when he died. Not fair!!
And with David writing a book — I hope he gets to be on TV interviews like Larry King, maybe Oprah, Ellen???

Hi Rose-I think the media would be surprised to learn that 50% of Davids fans are not teens/tweens as they keep calling us! I think sometimes Davids youthful look makes them think he is younger then he is. He is going to be 20 this year, nothing teen about that! Certainly nothing like Justin Beaver! *shudder*
rose if you think about it the media may be going huh because what other artist has both young and older fans right now? he is an enigma and one of a kind!

I understand your concern. As someone who cares about David, I would be concerned if you were ~not~ concerned about him. However, just in my opinion, I don’t think David’s fans have turned radio stations against him. I think his music isn’t being played much now because he hasn’t had a new single out in quite a while. And, let’s be honest, he hasn’t had a new singled PUSHED since Crush.
It’s all politics with airplay anymore. Clear Channel dominates the market. If you don’t think there are sweetheart deals going down as to who gets air time, then you’re much more trusting of the music industry than I. Not to say that a non-”pimped” song can’t break through. It happens. It’s just rare.
For whatever reason, none of the singles released after Crush were really pushed for airplay. We saw a bit of ALTNOY but that’s about it. TMH, I’m not sure if that can even be considered a single release. Maybe.
But essentially the lack of airplay is related to a lack of new music.
What I’m getting at here is that while I think restraint is important in a fan base (goodness, look at the issues AL is having with his fans), I also think it’s important not to hold back completely just for fear of angering a random radio station. There certainly is a smart way to approach it. When a single is out, call and request. Notice I said call — singular. Calling 500 times per day is silly and annoying. But if we don’t let people know that there are those out there who would like to hear David’s music, how are they to know??
Also. I think most of us can have common sense about calling and requesting where there is not an active single out. If it’s a station that takes requests and is open to anything, then by all means — request it. If they play just current releases then it’s probably not a good idea to call.
I think it all boils down to being reasonable. I’m not going to temper my love of David for fear of “upsetting” someone. LOL, I think most people care far less than you might suspect. Hmm, not sure if what I’m trying to say is coming across. Maybe this will sound better: In the same way that we are preoccupied in thinking always about David, I think we can also worry too much about angering others in our support of him. Some people in this fan base seem very worried about how much we contact radio stations or do things to keep David’s name out there. I am not. I do not see many David fans acting unreasonably. And I suspect that other non-David fans do not spend many sleepless nights plotting how to take down David’s career because his fans are so annoying. LOL. I hope my playful sarcasm is coming across here. I’m just trying to put some perspective on it.
Also. With the Demi tour. Well, there you go — the DEMI tour. As much as we may not like the idea, Demi was the headliner. In many instances, David was advertised little to not at all as part of the tour. Therefore, the majority of the audience was there for Demi. I think they enjoyed David’s set. But as we all know, not many crowds get out of their seats for an opener. I’ve been to quite a few concerts and David actually had A LOT more fans out of their seats as an opener than I’ve ever seen. Really.
I’m not trying to trivialize any of your concerns, but I hope that maybe this can alleviate some of them?
(Sorry for making such a long post! LOL, David inspires me. And I just love talking about David)

69/Rose-it really made me feel good and warmed my heart to hear Dapo say it thought “Desperate” was an incredible song. It was my first love from the cd and have felt from day one it would have been a good song to release to the radio and would have appealed to the 20 and over crowd. ALTNOY never got the promo it deserved, neither did TMH, I think they were released more to appease fans then for sales. Which is a shame on both counts!

He really needs to have a hit single. About his other singles besided Crush not being a hit. I read once that someone said that Jive was in with Idol and wanted to hold David back a little so he didn’t over shadow Cook. What do you guys think?

They were also saying that youtube was taking away David’s most watched video’s, so it didn’t look like he was getting more hits than David Cook. They said that Idol has a lot of poll and that they wanted David cook to be more successful because it would be better for the show. It doesn’t make sense that Jive would to that. But they have not been very good and getting Davids singles out there.

And I actually like Cook and think he’s talented. Of course Idol wants Cook to be successful since he won and it was their job to promote him, but I don’t think they had any control over David. As fans, we’re always disappointed when we don’t think D gets enough promotion or whatever (like with a little too not over you…the video never seemed to get promoted), but I think we’re all hopeful regarding the new album. David is so talented, and still so young. Too much too fast is not a good thing either and I truly believe he will make his mark in the music world.

I wish we David’s fans, who vote at all these voting sites & twitters, do it FOR FUN & the purpose of keeping David’s name active in public, not to compete with the enemies or create wars with other artists’ fans.
It has been more than 1 year……I don’t see any benefits for David’s career, except that we know there are a lot of people love there favorite artists also & they’re not going to change their mind to love & support ours just because we win the vote. Other people look at these as a funny…….

Hi all! Just stopping in before work and reading a little. The chat with Dapo was soo good and he described David with those 5 words perfectly! Interesting reading today about how people think David will do with CD#2. I think it will be great. He’s working with really talented people and well,we KNOW he has supernatural talent. I think we have to hope and pray that Jive/Azoff will really promote the singles and the album when the time comes and get those singles radio airplay. That’s the way he’ll gain more fans and people buying his CDs and concert tix. If he’s not promoted publicly on the radio/TV then he’ll continue to have only his loyal fanbase like alot of other past Idol contestants do. David’s talent should be out there for the world to hear. I know he doesn’t always care about being the big pop star, etc., but for his album to be successful a single needs to hit it big on Top 40 radio.

i don’t subscribe to conspiracy theories posted on youtube comments to influence the way i feel about david, his career, or much of anything else… people say rude, ugly, outrageous things there, and all over the web because they can – for no better reason… what we must do as a base, i think always, is keep our eyes focused forward, on what is transpiring in present time, and those things on the horizon… we cannot be pulled to and fro, or flung into doubt every time a not so nice comment is made about david… they will most likely begin to increase, and get worse the more successful he becomes, and the closer he gets to album release time, so just prepare yourselves, lol… we have been through a lot of this before, we are smarter and wiser this time around, and we are not, or i think should not be so easily distracted by the games the media, and crazy people on the web play… stay anchored, and grounded, and focused on our role as fans, and what we can do to positively represent david, and help keep his profile high, w/o resorting to the dirty dealings and tactics of those who envy or are jealous of his success…

What amazes me is that the bad guy seems to get all the attention and the good guy doesn’t. Perhaps “bad” isn’t a good word to use here but its the best I can think of to make my point. Adam Lambert (“bad guy”) goes on Award show and makes an xxx of himself (the network even cancelled an interview with him for the following day because of what that did to his image). Then another network has him on, and then another, and then Leno, etc. and he’s the big hero. Meanwhile, our David is doing all this charity work, he’s put out this fabulous Christmas album (too bad people don’t go to Christmas concerts and listen to Christmas music year round because I think more shows might have scheduled him). But my disappointment is that not enough people are seeing and hearing what we are. He’s just not in the public eye. And I shouldn’t bring this up again but I still feel that David would have gotten more votes than Cook if the judges had not been so partial to DA that last nite of competition. Our David was sssoooooo much better. That fact along with the judges vote of confidence made people think he had it all sacked up. The worried Cook fans got on the phone while the confident Archuleta fans didn’t need to bother.
What can we do to get David on television shows? what can we do to get more of those songs on his first album heard so that more people will be anxiously waiting like we are for his next album? how can we get him into more magazines and newspapers with articles tell about this 19-year-old that looks like a 14-year-old and knows more about what’s important in life than most 50-year-olds? Sure, I’ve seen such articles but they’re only in one little paper in Utah, or a magazine for teens in Maylaysia, or something on a radio station in Amarillo. He needs some national attention. It almost seems to me that he’s getting more of that in other countries than in the USA.
talk about promotion, I don’t know anything about some celebrities on TV or in magazines. Do they get paid or do they pay to be on TV or magazines? I guess if you’re popular, then you will get paid some.

134/ hi rose – there is really not much we can do about the points you raised in your last paragraph – those issues and concerns are the responsibilty of his management team – azoff mgmt, or getting right down to it, jared paul and his dad… the mgmt side of the house are the ones who ”beat the bushes” so to speak to secure bookings, appearances, promotional opportunities to keep their clients name and profile out there… they are the ones responsible for doing their dead level best to make and use whatever connections in the industry they have to help their client get these spots… it may not always work out in our favor… we have no idea exactly how this process is carried out behind closed doors, or which one is responsible for exactly what…. we as fans have little to no direct influence, really, over the decisions made in this area – we do the best we can to keep our fave ”in the hunt” when and wherever we can, but it is a management duty and responsibility to secure work hard toward securing those things that get their client out in front of the public, in large ways, in the hope that it will influence them to buy whatever ”product” is being sold…

Rose-in my book, thats good promo by Adams label, strike while the iron is hot! Like him or not, it got Adam massive exposure, he has been everywhere, and while his sales arent stellar they are on the rise in part due to his being all over the place. Is this fair to David, guess it would depend on whether you asked me, or David!
rose, I feel the same way. I’m just thinking though that Adam is just a flash in the pants along with bieber ect. David has the talent to be one of those artist that are around for a long time. hey guys I need some advice on how to deal with a huge issue with my parents….
So I want to see this movie 2nite I was planning to go with a friend but her parents won’t let her go out at night because they don’t want to stay up until she gets home (she can’t go during the day because she is babysitting) my mom the proceeded to talk for a long time about how selfish that was so when I asked if she could bring my sister and I to the theater she said no because she wanted to go out with my dad and then come home to watch a movie and go to bed instead of getting me. When I suggested an earlier movie her response “well then we have nothing to do with Robert” (my little brother) how do I explain that it is the exact same thing that she dissed for half an hour that she is doing without being disrespectful?? every time I try to rationally explain something like that a 15 year old girl should not be randomly banned from going out on Friday night because her parents don’t want to pick her up somewhere I am yelled at for being disrespectful. At this point I am used to never being allowed to do anything but what I really want them to realize is if they talk for half an hour in front of me about how they know that is a horrible thing to do to your kid I might be insulted if they turn around and do it to me because I feel as though they just don’t care about being good parents…. any advice
Archieluver hmm that is a hard one.. but one thing I know that I respect from my son is when things are calm he speaks to me in a soft intelligent and non threatening manner if he doesn’t quite agree with me and my reasonings? It may not be the right time now but perhaps you can talk with your parents in a meaningful manner at a future time?
One thing I do know being a parent and juggling all that life kind of throws at you is one of the toughest jobs.

kimk I just can’t talk to them I feel like they never really pay attention to things I say…. things in my family have been quite weird lately almost like they have more important things going on yesterday my parents completely forgot to pick me up from school and it took 20 minutes straight of calling home to even get so much as an answer a few nights ago they were talking to my sister and kicked me out of the room last night the same happened when they were talking to my brother. Ugh..sorry, didn’t mean to worry anyone with my morning post about sales. I just think it’s better for one’s sanity (my sanity, actually) to be realistic and then pleasantly surprised, as opposed to having high expectations and then be disappointed. ..Re: the possibility that David’s fans have hurt his career, there are only 2 examples I can think of, and one might not have been true. (1) The ALTNOY OHP campaign was definitely a mistake, and made Mr. Program Director very very upset. I was one of the lucky callers who got to hear him vent. So let’s not try that again, please.
(2) Way back when, there was talk that fans might’ve influenced Jive’s decision to make ALTNOY the 2nd single, and we all know what happened with that. IDK if it’s true, but I don’t think fans should be given that much power…Other than that, I can’t think of anything else.
The luger from Georgia…wow, that’s really sad. Why do they have to show footage of that?
Ya never know….if they really did take a poll of David’s AGE of his fanbase — I bet we’d be surprised at what percentage the OLDER fans are!!!!!

i’m just glad he has fans of all ages who support him, lololol… there are other artists who work years to acquire the fanbase of the type david has… all ages, all races, both genders, active supporters… he has a pretty diverse fanbase across all demographics, and that is something to be proud of… others lament the lack of young people, or the ability to appeal to adults… david carried that over with him from idol, and is constantly expanding it… so let them keep guessing just exactly who we are, and how large and strong we are… sometimes it’s best not to show all your cards

jordin is a phenomenal singles seller… her album sales this go round…. they speak for themselves… which is why we cannot get complacent ever, about anything related to david – sales, fanbase support, etc… album sales are on the decline for everybody, and artists need that strong committed fanbase support more than ever, and to keep expanding their base as much as possible… i don’t think her base is as broad or deep as david’s – her 2nd album was released in july, and i was shocked at the end of the year to see cfth outselling hers… pleasantly shocked, but shocked… so we gotta stay on the ball for him, and i think we will…

The video for the much talked about “We Are The World 25 For Haiti” made its big debut tonight during the opening ceremony coverage of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.
Over 80 stars gathered on February 1 to record the updated version of the song, which was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie twenty-five years ago.
The revamped version tries its best to live up to the glory of the original, and in some parts it does. Solos by newer stars like Jennifer Hudson, Pink, Usher, Adam Levine, and Josh Groban shine the light on some of today’s best talents. Janet Jackson “dueting” with her brother Michael is another heart-warming bit. But the song commits an epic fail by allowing flimsy vocalists like Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and Nick Jonas play too big of a role.
The song takes an even worse dip when a little more than halfway in “We Are The World” becomes “We Are Very Fond Of Autotune.” The tune is assaulted with back to back to back robotic solos by Lil Wayne, Akon, and T-Pain.
Aside from what we think is right or wrong with the song, it was done for a very worthy cause. You can purchase the song now at World25.org with the proceeds going to help the survivors of the Haiti earthquake.
