Even a person as athletically challenged as myself can see what a huge deal this is. I can’t help but squeal at the thought of getting to see David sing his Christmas songs in front of a live TV audience. He’ll be performing on December 31st and with a football game so close to the new year, I can just imagine the kind of buzz it will get.

David Archuleta sings from the heart in Christmas album

Christmas songs are intrinsically beautiful for imparting the message of love and hope. This means singers need only to render these well to deliver their magic and purpose.
David Archuleta does just that. In the CD “Christmas From The Heart,” the “American Idol” runner-up passes up on grand ambitions, opting instead to use his soaring pipes for simple yet soulful renditions of the 13 tracks here.
The effect: Goosebumps galore akin to the feeling of watching his showdown with Cook in “Idol” back when.
Indeed, 18-year-old Archie (a nickname his fans gave him) is serious in putting out feel-good music regardless of a song’s popularity. This 13-track album of all-time Christmas favorites, as well as lesser-known holiday tunes, plus an original song, also stands testament to Archie’s versatility in that his voice can fit any type of setting – from an intimate club to an orchestra-filled theater stage.
His vocal prowess is highlighted in the tracks “Joy To The World,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.” In “What Child Is This” and “Silent Night,” he sounds almost like a divine messenger lulling a child to “sleep in heavenly peace.” He touches on longing, too, in “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” which, surely, many OFWs could relate to.
And then there’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Done as a duet with Charice Pempengco, another singing champion, it is remarkable how the ballad did not bear any palpable upmanship between the singers. Pempengco, who is known for belting singing style, is a refreshing revelation here for simply toning it down. Verily, less is more.
The “AI” alumnus pays homage to his Spanish roots in “Ave Maria” and “Riu Riu Chiu”—only to go French in an upbeat rendition of the Burgundian classic carol, “Pat-A-Pan.” The songs may be relatively obscure, but in Archie’s hands, they become likely favorites.
He sums up every good emotion he feels about Christmas in his co-penned finale, “Melodies of Christmas.”
“Filling hearts with Christmas cheer, may it last through all the year / Something in the melodies, that the Christmas season brings / Joy and laughter in the air, smiling faces everywhere.”
Joy and laughter—that’s what Archie wants for Christmas.
And for simply singing the songs the way he did, he gives even before he receives.

David Archuleta’s self-titled debut last year featured the Top 5 hit “Crush.” Now the 2008 “American Idol” runner-up is on tour behind a new holiday album, “Christmas from the Heart.” Archuleta, who turns 19 on Dec. 28, spoke to us last week by phone from Idaho, before a gig there.
There are so many holiday albums. What do you hope sets yours apart?
I wanted to be able to get that feeling of this whole time of year into the songs, and to be able to share that with people.
That was my goal with the album. And that’s my goal with the tour, too.
For the first part of the show, the focus is on pop music and non-holiday songs.
In the second part of the show, we focus on the Christmas music. Hopefully, people leave in the mood for the holidays.
In my life, there’s no other time when I’ve been more involved with music than the holiday season, every year.
I’ve always been really into Christmastime. I used to go caroling with my brothers and sisters, and we used to do family shows together in retirement homes and hospitals. I really enjoyed it.
How did you conjure the proper mood in the recording studio?
I was like, “Man, it’s summer and it’s sunny outside, and here I am inside, thinking about these Christmas songs!”
But the weather doesn’t affect the songs. The meanings don’t change.
I just thought: “What are these songs about?” It helped me get deep into the meanings. And I tried to get those emotions out as best as I could in my performance.
Sometimes there were Christmas lights in the studio, too.
What’s the story behind “Melodies of Christmas,” the new song that you co-wrote?
It’s about the melodies in Christmas songs, how they bring back those memories of being around the Christmas tree, opening presents with your family and spending time with people you care about.
Simple melodies — like [sings] “Glo-o-o-o-o-o-ria” or [sings] “Chestnuts roasting. . .” — all those songs, they bring back those memories and those holiday feelings.
Those melodies really have a kind of magic to them.
While the lyrics are powerful, there’s something about the melodies themselves that really leaves an impression on people. That’s what the song is about.
Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?
This year, I really focused on journal writing. I was like, “I need to record what I’ve been doing, so my kids can know my story.”
Next year, I want to focus on songwriting. I want to write as much as I can.
Right after the holidays, I’m going to be working on my next album. . . . I’m hoping to show more of myself. What I’ve been trying to do in the writing is show more of my personality, what’s on my mind, my creative side and my realistic side — just showing people more of who I am.
Another goal is to learn to play guitar better.

A Christmas Miracle
A story by Prerana
I trudged home through the thick layer of white, powdery snow, my footprints leaving marks behind me, as if saying I was here. This is my Christmas. I looked up and saw a dove streak across the sky, proud and high, like an angel. It seemed to call another dove, its sound sweet and pure. It made it seem as if Christmas is perfect. Of course, for me, this was far from true. I hadn’t even been looking forward to Christmas this year. My father’s been gone from home taking care of my grandparents and I haven’t seen him for six months now. They’re so sick that they cannot even come on the plane, so he can’t bring them home with him. Their dream is to get better and come to America and my father’s dream is to return home. I can’t imagine a Christmas without him.
I walk past the decorations which seem to flaunt the holiday spirit. I see the word “Joy” on a banner hanging across the mall around me, streaming gallantly in the air. I walk home and find a package on the door. It’s a present from my aunt who couldn’t fly over to spend Christmas with me. I know that I should wait until tomorrow morning, when it is actually Christmas, but I need a present now. I open the package carefully and remove a small square-shaped item. I turn it over and realize that it is a CD, Christmas from the Heart by David Archuleta. If only I could enjoy my Christmas, I thought to myself. I left it on the table and went upstairs.
That night, after all the rituals of Christmas Eve were over, I prayed for my father and grandparents to come home. I prayed for a Christmas that I could truly enjoy. The night was quiet, almost silent. I looked outside the window and saw a single star shining in the sky, vital and bright. I knew I had to wake up early tomorrow for Christmas. I wasn’t eager, but I decided that I should try to be. I said my prayers, and then climbed under the covers, and put myself to sleep.
The next morning, I heard my sister yelling, “It’s Christmas!” and I woke up to her excitement. Attempting to smile, I went downstairs with her to the Christmas tree. I smiled at the small stack of presents spread under the tree. Tears welled in my eyes because it wasn’t right. My dad was supposed to be there. Then, I heard my mother come downstairs and she then pushed play and sweet music began to play. I then realized that it was the David Archuleta CD which I had left outside yesterday. “Merry Christmas,” she whispered to me and gave me a hug. “Everything will be okay.”
I attempted to smile back. Then, I leaned against the Christmas tree a little too hard and an ornament fell from the tree into my hand. I looked down and the ornament, decorated with flowers and embellishments, read “The true importance lies within.” I then realized that inside me, my father and my grandparents were with me and it didn’t matter that physically, they were not there. I then realized with awe the wonder of the music that was playing in the background. Images began to flash in my mind as David Archuleta’s Christmas music continued, relentlessly, ceaselessly. I remembered the angelic dove I heard in the sky as the song “Angels We have Heard on High” played quietly through the speakers. The banner I saw across, the mall which read joy: “Joy to the World.” I remembered my prayers last night, how the night was silent, “Silent Night.” The single star I viewed, “The First Noel.” Then, I realized that Christmas is not just something that can happen to a person, but it is everywhere, wherever we go. I recognized that Christmas is something I carry with me. The spirit and the joy are real. David Archuleta’s music has made this real for me. I let the tears spill over my eyes and hugged my mother. “Thank you,” I whispered.
She smiled and handed me a present. “Open it,” she said. It was an envelope, thin, and small. In perplexity, I opened the envelope and read the words on the page. It was only one sentence, but it was enough to make me cry even harder than before, to make me thankful for everything in my life, to make me realize and once again, believe.
It read: “We’re coming home. Love, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa”
In the background, David Archuleta’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” played quietly and tranquilly. I sank to the floor in amazement. My prayers were answered. This was a miracle, my own Christmas miracle.

Candy I think there is less competition on the Christmas album and also It is just the right fit for David so they probably did promote it more. What ever it takes to get his name out there. I bet the Grand Junction venue would not have sold out if it was just a pop concert. David needs to stick with songs like The Riddle, Fields Of Gold, et. Those songs can capture any audience and hold them tight! He needs songs he can get so emotionally into that showcase his beautiful voice. They need to quit trying to appeal to the tweens. He is in a different league than that of the Jonas Bros. He is a young John Mayer or Jason Mraz.

We have been here the whole time, we loved him before it was cool, before real singing came back into popularity, before the rebellion against the grime and filth that is surely coming. We stood our ground, and took the teasing and eye-rolling for loving this teenager. I just found out that some folks where I used to work during Idol Season 7 though I was a nut-case. I honestly don’t care. I spend my free-time supporting a most-deserving person and artist. His age doesn’t matter. His sex/race/religion doesn’t matter.

Thanks GG that was beautiful! People need to let go of these boundaries, but it is hard for some, very hard. They see a teenager first, not an artist. They hear a pop song and put him in a box. They are not online seeing the other songs/styles he has inside of him, seeing the performances post-Idol. These latest articles and TV appearances will surely help.

72/ hi funnygirl… i consider it then to be their loss, if they can’t take off the blinders, and get past the narrowness of their minds to recognize real talent such as this… i think too many human beings waste too much time in life trying to stereotype people, attach labels on them to make them fit into what is a faulty construct in their minds that believes everything and everyone must fit or conform a nice, neat, prefab little label or category, and god forbid if someone appears that blows that construct out of the water… it makes them uncomfortable, and that sometimes leads to a lot of actions and reactions that comes across as negative in nature… change for some is difficult, when those construct blasters come into focus, but given time, attitudes can shift, and soften – as evidenced by many who held faulty constructs about david until they experienced him either via cd or live, and in person… keeps hope alive for me that human beings aren’t a total lost cause

When I was at the DTE VIP there were alot of people, I loved just sitting back and watching him interact with the people when they approached him. He is the most patient loving guy on this planet, I saw him calm down a teen who was afraid to approach him and she was in tears and the way he handled her was amazing! He was so sensitive to her needs and calmed her down so that she could stand next to him and get a pic with him. He’s gonna make an awesome father someday

FG- I met him briefly at the Idols Concert last year in Evansville! WHen he was in front of me, I forgot to speak. I just asked for a picture with him and handed him a present not even saying anything about it. IT was the archugaze. lol Then after he got down the line a bit, I forgot to have him sign my shirt, so I had to call him back over. OMG I was embarrassed. Good morning everyone! I just called the Ramada Inn in Waukegan to change our reservation……we were going to go down today and we still can’t get out of our neighborhood. Anyway, the lady at the hotel told me that they were suppose to get blasted with the blizzard but surprisingly they only got a couple of inches! YES!!!! So it looks good in Waukegan. Now if I can only get out of here tomorrow all will be well in the world! Off to watch videos.

“American Idol” has produced a number of talented performers including Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood and David Cook. Not to mention the runners-up, such as David Archuleta. Since his 2008 appearance in the competition, Archuleta has now released his second album, “Christmas from the Heart,” and is on tour performing for the holidays. That tour will bring him to MGM Grand at Foxwoods for a 7 p.m. concert Dec. 17. “This album represents my love for Christmastime, and what it really is all about,” he said in a press release. “This is a special time of year that we spend with family and loved ones. It means so much to each one of us. I hope you can all feel that in the music.”
Archuleta worked on the album, ironically, during the summer while he was touring with Demi Lovato. “It’s hot outside but I’m singing Christmas songs inside,” Archuleta laughed. “I always wanted to do a Christmas album and people have always said I should because they know how involved I get at the holidays.” Stephen Thomas Erlewine of All Music Guide, said of the album, “… he was born to slickly sing sentimental standards … Archuleta is comfortable in such a familiar setting, singing in a friendly, eager-to-please fashion that will win him no new fans but will surely please all the old ones …”
“Christmas from the Heart” features the typical Christmas songs, including “Joy to the World,” “The First Noel,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” It also features Archuleta’s favorite on the album, “Pat-A-Pan.” He sings in Spanish, Latin and some French. He’ll also sing another one of his Christmas favorites, “O Holy Night.” One of his other favorites is not on the album, but he loves Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
“She just has this cool softness,” he said. At the tender age of 17, Archuleta was the youngest competitor in 2008’s Season 7 of “American Idol.” While he won many hearts, he finished as runner-up to rocker David Cook in the finale. But it was good enough to be signed that summer to 19 Recordings/Jive Records and he released his self-titled debut album in November 2008, which started off at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was certified gold in January. The album features the songs “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Crush,” the video for which was No. 23 on VH1’s Top 40 Videos of 2008. And while it’s been all work since “American Idol,” Archuleta isn’t complaining. “It’s been pretty busy … a lot of performing and getting to tour a lot,” Archuleta said. “Then I worked on the pop album and then more touring, touring and touring. It’s more performing and touring than I’ve ever done, but it’s so much fun.”
Citing his musical influences as Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Kirk Franklin and Bryan Adams, Archuleta performed John Lennon’s “Imagine” and won over the “Idol” judges early — including Simon Cowell who said after his performance, “What we have witnessed, is a knock out.”

Archuleta, the runner-up in the May 2008 American Idol finale, recently released “Christmas from the Heart,” his sophomore album. The teenager’s Christmas album debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard Top 200 list and No. 2 on Billboard’s Holiday Albums list when it was released in October.
Archuleta is the third American Alum to perform in the El Paso area in recent weeks. Kelly Clarkson performed in Las Cruces last week and David Cook, who beat Archuleta for the American Idol title, performed at Club 101 in early November.

Having spent the past year touring incessantly, “American Idol” season 7 runner-up David Archuleta says he will never forget his memorable visit last spring to Northeast Ohio. “Actually, I [appeared] at the [I-X] Indoor Amusement Park, and it was a lot of fun,” said Archuleta, calling from Rexburg, Idaho. “And we had a day off there, too. That was the first time I got to see Amish country. We saw the Wal-Mart there. It was cool to see how they had the buggy parking. I thought it was really neat.”
If Archuleta sounds like a kid, that’s because, well, in many ways he still is. Though he turns 19 in a few weeks, the Utah native is at an age when most of his peers are figuring out their class schedules and thinking about pursuing a career. For the pop singer, these decisions were pretty much decided for him when he ended up going the distance on the 2008 “American Idol,” where he came in second to David Cook.
What followed was the de rigueur whirlwind of press and touring in support of his self-titled gold-selling debut effort, which included singles “Crush,” “A Little Too Not Over You” and “Touch My Hand.” Granted, it’s time to work on his sophomore effort — Archuleta said he’s already written new material for the CD he hopes to have out in 2010 — but the singer decided to indulge his love of the holidays by releasing his debut seasonal album, “Christmas From the Heart.”
“A Christmas album is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Archuleta said. “But it’s something I never knew I’d be able to like this, to be able to have orchestrated tracks and have my own original arrangements. And Christmas music has always played a really big part with my family. It’s always been a fun holiday. Ever since I was little, we always used to go Christmas caroling and go visit hospitals and retirement homes and put on shows for them.
“So it’s always been really cool. It’s always been really fun memories to just look back on and just sing with my brothers and sisters and stuff. So now it’s weird to be able to do a Christmas album with those songs and to just get to perform them. I really feel like it’s meaningful music. To be able to do meaningful music and make an album with those kinds of songs, I’m just really grateful for that opportunity.”
Archuleta said his holiday tour, which comes to Cleveland’s Palace Theatre on Saturday, is designed specifically to entertain fans with his pop music in the first half, and Christmas-based tunes end the show.

It seems as every time he gets a chance like this he doesnt sing his own songs. Always love the exposure just wish that it would help him sell his own CDs. Even on Idol he didnt sing his single ALTNOY! The Christmas promo has been really good especially with no TV appearances yet except Kalidescope. Cant wait until eveybody sees his amazing talent at the Sun Bowl.
