The sights and sounds of Ann Arbor
David is already on his way to California for the next stop on his “Christmas from the Heart” tour, but we have a lot of of listening to do before we, the fans, can move on.
I’ll say that having listened to a few of these songs, it sounds like it was just as we thought it would be: beautiful, reverent, fun and unlike anything we’ve heard from David before.

Andrea shared this story of running into Ann Arbor Symphony director Arie Lipsky in the hotel after the concert! Fantastic insight!
After one of the most amazing concerts we have ever heard in our lives, and the first time most of us have been to a symphony orchestra, we returned to Scott’s hotel to chat and order some pizza….lol
As we sat in the lobby a few of us noticed a man with his family chatting by the main lobby doors. I thought the man looked familiar and said to Kristin and Scott, “I think they were at concert tonight’…doy!!!! It’s MR LIPSKY, the conductor of the Ann Arbor Symphony !
So, being the outgoing person that I am, I approached Mr Lipsky and asked if it was indeed him, (it was) and I said, ‘Let me shake your hand, the symphony with David tonight was amazing’
He chatted freely with our group of fod’ers (Scott, Kristin, Pam, Amy, Andrea, Lexi, Gloria, Holly, EL and her husband, Laurie and Joy)
Highlights of his conversation were: When he first met David what he noticed right away were (in his words)… ‘his sparkly eyes’… and that David is so ‘real’…. he said David is so amazing to work with and at such a young age is so in tune to performing with an orchestra, and that he instinctively knows what to do. We asked him if they would have David back in the future and he said……’Oh YES!!’
Kristin asked him what his favorite song of the night was and he said without hesitation
‘O Holy Night’….that ‘chills ran up my back’ as David sang that song and although he is supposed to be concentrating on conducting he couldn’t help but look at David as he sang that song.
He talked about the amazing arrangements of the songs David performed and we informed him of our friendship with Richard Parkinson, the fansofdavid fan site and he said ‘oh yeah, I know Richard’ and he signed a program for him.
We asked for a group picture with him and could we post it on fansofdavid…he said ’sure’…he was gracious with his time, answered our questions and made it known he thinks highly of David and his talent.
We are now hoping David performing with the Ann Arbor Symphony becomes a yearly Holiday tradition.

Just a quick story from the second SLC show, I know you have all seen the videos of this night, and yes David was SUPERB. During the Encore
OHN, the usher (working for the night) by my door at Abravanal Hall kept wiping her eyes. She could not stop the tears. I talked to her as I walked out, she could not believe how powerful David was with his Christmas music. Of course I suggested she get his album and talked about what a great teen David is.

David Archuleta’s performance Friday night with the Ann Arbor Symphony was full of many high points, breathtaking moments and tear-jerking melodies.
Stepping into this concert, I didn’t know what to expect. On one hand, I was bracing myself for high-pitched squeals from young teenage girls and on the other hand I was getting ready for a lovely symphony performance. During this concert, Archuleta combined an element of pop and classical music to create a beautiful, once in a lifetime experience.
The concert was filled with too many mentionable moments to list. He opened with a jaw-dropping rendition of “Angels We Have Heard on High” (Arr. Kurt Bestor), which brought many of the audience members to tears.
Between songs, in this innocent boyish charm, Archuleta filled the auditorium by talking about many different oddities such as showing us where we were in Michigan using his very own hand for the lower and upper peninsulas. He also shared with us his connection to each song and how much he enjoyed the symphony.
During the first half of the show, David sang a few of his pop songs accompanied by the symphony. A definite stand-out among these was “Crush,” his debut single from this self-titled album (released in November). The symphony slowed it down quite a bit and turned this usually fast, upbeat tune into a slower, more ballad-like version of the song.
During the first half of the concert David also stepped away from his usual concert repertoire and sang songs from other artists such as “Fields of Gold” (Sting), “The Riddle” (Five for Fighting) and “1000 Miles” (Vanessa Carlton). Although the first half of the concert was definitely note-worthy, after intermission, David really stepped it up a notch.
David surprised everyone in the crowd with a new song he had never performed before called “A Merry Christmas to Me” (Philip Keveren; Arr. Sam Cardon; Orch. Neesha Quinn), which quickly became my favorite Christmas tune.
After Archuleta sang a superb “Ave Maria”, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house- including mine. When David sang “Ave Maria” it really reminded me of why I fell in love with him in the first place. Although David can belt out any pop song you throw at him, when he sings a slower, more traditional song while backed up by a symphony, you can’t help but have tingles sent up and down your spine. The environment of the auditorium, along with the Ann Arbor symphony, really helped David’s voice to soar.
The acoustics in Hill Auditorium were amazing — they really helped to bring all of the songs to life. When Archuleta sang his rendition of “1000 Miles,” his voice engulfed every last corner of the auditorium and made it vibrate with soothing notes and lyrics. Along with the acoustics, the fact that there was a very minimal amount of teenage squeals made the concert more professional, polished and entertaining.
When you pair a glorious, Josh Groban-like singer along with a beautiful symphony and a stunning auditorium, the product is nearly perfect. The concert on Friday was an unforgettable experience in an amazing venue. I sincerely hope that Archuleta’s producers choose to have him perform with symphonies more often because it really brings out the best in this young star

Oh – I dunno if this is true or not but the folks selling the merchandise were asked by a fan if David makes any money from the sale of the items and they told her that he makes 70% of it ????!!! Whoa – I’d have bought something if I knew that!!

70/ i knew it archieluver – you were not going to let the decorating go forth without some archuleta in da house, hahahha… you are amazing, and i beth it’s going to look really nice when you’re all done… i’m keeping it simple – hanging wreaths, placing candles in the windows, decorating my mailbox, and will buy a small tree… when i was your age, my folks used to go out out decorating the house and yard for christmas… used to love all those lights, manger scenes, santa displays, hahahah… i think my mom still has a life sized santa up in the attic, with the reindeer… my dad used to put that on the roof of our house, hahaha…

i did notice a sizable drop in christmas shopping traffic and people out yesterday in charlotte… you can tell the recession has hit hard, and folks are feeling the pinch economically… neither walmart nor target had the huge crowds as in past years for black friday, and driving around the city, and in a couple other towns, from my perspective there were less people out in the malls and the usual places… they could be waiting till closer to christmas to shop, but i think the recession is really gonna make a dent in christmas sales for all the retailers… i hope it’s a good season for them, and i hope people that are able to can buy what they need and want to give to their family and loved ones… have made my donations to several charities to help those in need be able to provide a nice christmas for their kids, and themselves… it’s needed more than ever this year….

108 GG yes it is starting to hit home around here too in the begining it wasn’t affecting my area but I see it now you go to the mall and see less and less people you go to the grocery store and see young children being told to buy only necesary items you see people lose their jobs. I am starting to see the affects more and more as I go out.

i think about that a lot, how the wear and tear and the grind of touring affects david, and how much sacrifice he goes through to bring enjoyment to his fans, in concert, or in appearances… this is what drives me so nuts sometimes when i read about selfish, rude, disrespectful fan behavior exhibited … do they not think of how much david has given, given up, still gives to make each of us happy hearing and seeing him sing all over the country… do we not take into consideration that his needs for space, privacy, vocal rest and other requests he makes at times supercede our desire to ”hear david sing just one more song in v i p, give one more hug, take one more picture, etc… i just want him to be happy, well rested, at peace with everything he’s doing always… and my apreciation for the sacrifices he makes to allow me to see him live is always in the forefront…

GG, I’ve been voting for the stadium of fire and everytime I do, I have to exit out of link I can’t arrow back. Is this correct? I thought I read somewhere you have to vote on facebook?

As much as we like to see him, I often wish he had more time to himself, and I would never have the nerve to ask him for anything. For two solid years he’s been non-stop, fortunately he’s got youth on his side, he’s got a good head on his shoulders and he’s pursuing his lifes dream. I have to go lye down and rest just reading about his journey.

An interesting note from the SLC brunch. Richard said he was impressed anew with David when he sat down and played The Riddle , accompanying himself and did so well. He said it’s very a hard song, the rhythms are so tricky. He was surprised since David’s talent is more with his voice than his playing. Those are not the exact words, but I think I got the main point he was trying to get across. His talent on the piano is improving.

Hello Everyone! I love what all of you have said about David. I am going to get groceries this week, using all the coupons I can find to maximize my buying power, for the local food shelf. Then I’m going to give David a Christmas & birthday card with info about getting the food for the foodshelf. Thats my gift to him, giving to others. I WONT include a selfaddressed stamped envelope expecting a response, just info in the card that I made the donation in his name. That he inspires giving to, caring about & taking care of others who need the help.
146/ i love that about david jeani/ut…… he goes beyond his comfort zone in perfecting his artistry so much, is willing to take risks and chances in concert no less, on songs and arrangements a lot of artists wouldn’t – and he is unafraid to show his vulnerability, and ”not so perfect side” as he’s stretching and learning and growing… that takes a deep seated kind of confidence to attempt, and a certain fearlessness to working through something, in the public eye, while getting better and better and better at it… he’s amazing, pure and simple.

155/ hi jeani/ut…. it’s a common trait in artists, musicians, writers, actors, and those with artistic sensibilities – this perfectionistic thing… the desire to do and be the best isn’t a bad thing, as long as you give yourself room to grow, to learn, and remain teachable, to make mistakes, to learn from them, and keep on keeping on… david is a perfectionist i think, but he’s showing great adaptability and flexibilty in ”loosening up”, and not closing himself of to learning from many sources along the way…

I just want him to know that he is making a difference to alot of people, reaching out, caring about others & its inspiring other people to do that too! Its like knocking down the first domino & the others soon follow. People see a great example such as David & it gets them motivated to respond. I think what people recognize with David is he isnt perfect no one is, but he’s out there trying his best day in & day out, going after his dreams, not by stepping on people to get there but stopping, asking if they need help, thanking them for the help they offer him & if they fall, do what you can to help them pick themselves up, preserving their self respect & dignity. I guess after hearing the audio from last night, I’m feeling all sorts of warm, wonderful things & wanting to share that with others.

160/ yep, the christmas spirit is strong in my house too… the realities of the recession is eye opening, and looks to be hitting everyone, across the board… charlotte was hit especially hard this year… two of the largest banks, and employers of people in the city, have had massive layoffs and cutbacks, as have every major company here… the goodwill and salvation army and charitable orgs are practically begging for donations and assistance – they are seeing dramatic rises in formerly upper middle class and middle class families applying for help… it’s sobering, but there is a lot to still be thankful for… i won’t be spending as much this year as in years past, i want to draw near to family and friends to celebrate, and draw near to the fans of david to celebrate a year of success for david… we’re blessed, blessed, blessed

What a beautiful concert in Ann Arbor. While I was waiting to get in, the Orchestra CEO stopped and said, “You are in for an amazing time. Rehearsals went so smoothly and he is such a super nice and genuine young man.” As someone else mentioned the musicians seemed to love him. After Ave Maria one of them wiped tears from his eyes and turned to the one next to him and said “WOW!” Every song was beautiful and the acoustics were amazing.

Hi All!!! This is just a “driveby” ….I just wanted to report in to GG! I love your “rally to the FOD street team”!
Yesterday, I could not bear to think of fighting the early crowds, but went shopping later!!! I am happy to report that I did “the shelf shuffle” in 4 Targets….1 Best Buy….and on Barnes and Noble!!! I cannot understand what Target must be thinking by putting David on the bottom shelf, but he miraculously came to the top, and to the front of the store by the “checkouts!” They definitely need help merchandising!!! BB also had him on the bottom shelf, and there was only one left!! Barnes and Noble had him on the bottom shelf with Christmas Music. I brought a couple over to the new releases display…and of course to the top shelf!!! Now, they just need to be playing his CD throughout their stores!!!

I finally introduced myself to David during he first VIP. I told him that this was the 4th time I had met him but that I had never introduced myself and said, “Hi, I’m Joy from Seattle.” His eyes lit up and he started talking about how a friend of his named Joshua had just gone to Seattle on a mission…and he just kept talking and talking and talking….. He said that if I ran into to him to make sure I told him that he said hi. I replied that if he came to my house that I’d do that, and then he started talking about him again.. and kept talking and talking and talking.. He was still talking as I was stepping away because I could see Ray giving me “the look” and then said “David really had to get on stage sometime that night.”
I put my arm around Ray and said, “I’m not the one doing the talking.”

JoyF, I agree. I guess pop is where David wants to go right now but I think he also wants to go this route one day where he can really display his magnificent voice. He can easily rise above Josh Groban if he has not already done so with this album.

It’s funny you are talking about Josh Groban – I made a playlist with David’s CFTH and Groban’s Noel and and played it on shuffle so the songs were mixed and I have to say I wondered if Josh’s power would overshadow David but first David’s Ave came on and then Josh’s and I was absolutely shocked at how much I disliked Josh’s – the vibrato was way too much for me and next to David, Josh’s vibrato really stood out and not in a good way. Needless to say I don’t think I can play them together anymore – David just completely owns Josh with these Christmas carols imo.

Candy, The 13 cents, is that per cd? I wonder what it is per indivdual song. I know they make alot of their money on tour & merchandise, but 7 cents per cd is highway robbery. Thats horrible. Without Davids talent, there wouldnt be any cd or money coming in for all of the others involved. I know that while Itunes is convenient, that & technology have hurt the recording industry, but still, I’m just floored by that.

374/Beth-The projected goal for David to start making even semi decent money was at least two years after the release of the first cd. He makes more money from itunes then he does from a regular cd, it costs less for the label for advertisement on itunes, plus no shipping, handling costs.

Good evening everyone! I’m still recuperating from Ann Arbor…sooo glad I decided to go….David and a full orchestra are something special indeed…it was a fantastic and unusual concert…many FODs said it was strange listening to David sing without all the screaming, sing-a-longs, dancing, jumping and waving that are usually part of a David Archuleta concert. It was a different experience…sometimes unnerving (no jumping during Zero Gravity? how do you DO that?)…but really nice to be able to just sit and soak in The Voice!
It was wonderful to meet so many FODers. I do have a little video…trying to upload it now…of the first few songs…so will post that asap. Anyway, that’s all for now…like I said, have an Archu-hangover so going to take it easy…you all know what I’m talking about.
