A2SO hopes to broaden audience with David Archuleta Christmas concert on Friday
======================================================
Santa isn’t the only celebrity coming to town this holiday season.
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra will team up with “American Idol”
singer David Archuleta on Friday night for a concert titled
“Christmas From the Heart” at Hill Auditorium.
The concert is in support of Archuleta’s new, Yule-themed CD of the same name.
Tickets went on sale at the end of October, and more than one-third of Hill’s available
3,500 seats sold out in the first week, attracting fans from as far away as San Francisco.
The concert, an addition to the symphony’s regular season, is a bit unusual since the
performing arts have been among those especially hard-hit by the economy.
“Where other orchestras are cutting concerts to balance budgets, we’re adding a concert,”
said Dave Siefkes, the A2SO marketing director. “Symphonies around the country are all
trying different things, they are more willing to look beyond the traditional. … The thing that
drove it for me was trying to get a broader audience.”
In addition to Christmas songs, Archuleta’s program will include his hit, “Crush,” as well as
“Zero Gravity” and a few other non-holiday tunes. The symphony will offer “Sleigh Ride” and
a selection from the “Nutcracker,” Siefkes added, “but mostly it’s David.”
The symphony is partnering with Radio Disney for the show, a first for both organizations
that could include two more concerts in future years, said Siefkes. The score for the Ann Arbor
performance was done by Disney especially for the show.
“They had some small scores for his Christmas album, but nothing like this,” Siefkes added.
“It was a learning process for them. They basically orchestrated everything for us. It has
never been performed before.” Siefkes said interest has been strong from around the country.
“Fan sites have been unbelievable about this because it is only (concert) on his tour with a
symphony orchestra,” said Siefkes.
Siefkes said work on the Archuleta concert started last January with a sales call. “Radio Disney
called on me trying to sell me some advertising. I had a great talk with their rep. It turned into
me saying ‘You know, the symphony should do a concert with Disney.’ One of my ideas was we
could perform the music live to ‘Fantasia.’” Disney’s Detroit general manager came to Ann Arbor,
heard the symphony perform, and was sold. “They came out and saw the quality of the product,”
Siefkes explained. The only thing that remained was to decide what to do. A brainstorming session followed.
“I’m a big ‘American Idol’ fan,” Siefkes admitted. David Archuleta was one name I threw out.
They brought up other names, like Taylor Swift. I brought up Miley Cyrus. Miley was very
expensive, Taylor was even more expensive.”
Although younger people know who Archuleta is, at least one member of the symphony
found his generation gap showing.
“When we first told (conductor Arie Lipsky) that we were considering a show with
David Archuleta, Arie said ‘Who’s he?’ (Then) all of his sudden his daughter is screaming
in the background. And dad’s a rock star now. He’s conducting David Archuleta,” Siefkes said.
Although Siefkes wouldn’t say how much the A2SO had to pay for Archuleta, “this is the most
we’re paying for a soloist ever … (but) I think we’ll sell it out.”
Siefkes said the concert will help the A2SO conclude the year on a high note. “A lot of
symphonies are down in attendance and subscriptions. We’re actually up, in fact we set
a record this year for subscribers.” The previous record, he said, was 733 subscribers.
This year, the A2SO has 963.
Ultimately, the show will be good for the symphony for several reasons. “Money-wise
and exposure-wise and reputation-wise, the fact of being able to work with the Disney
company is great, the quality is superior and that was important to them, just like it was
important to us,” Siefkes added. He said the musicians are jazzed about the Christmas show.
“From what I’ve heard they are pretty excited. Some were very sad they were going to
be out of town for Thanksgiving. Again, if they’ve got kids, they’re going to be the rock stars —
and we’re adding services to the season for them, a chance to perform some more and get paid for it.”

A: There isn’t a whole lot of time to rehearse it. The songs I already know,
and I will have a little bit of time to go through them with the orchestra.

coming to life performed with a live orchestra and that’s really exciting for
me and I am really happy to be able to be able to get to do it.

Q: How has life been since ‘Idol?’ Are things less of a whirl, or more?

A: It hasn’t really stopped. ‘American Idol’ was just a year ago, so much
has happened since then. I can’t believe I went through that and all the
extremes I had, from the beginning of those auditions where I wasn’t sure
what was going to happen to now, having released an album last year and
now the Christmas album and Christmas tour. It’s like, wow — I did not think
I would have moved this much since last year. It’s just crazy. I didn’t think I
would be going on tour this year and performing and getting to work on music
and a Christmas album over the summer, which is kind of funny, working on a
Christmas album in the summer. It’s made Christmas last a lot longer this year.
It’s just go, go, go but it’s nice. I’m productive with myself and that’s a good feeling.

A: This is my Christmas gift to all the fans. I wanted to keep it really heartfelt
and share what I feel is important about Christmas. It’s my favorite holiday
first of all, and Christ’s birth is really important to me, and just that whole thing
of celebrating that and celebrating his life is really special. … It’s really neat to see
the (Christmas album) come out now. I spent all summer working on this, I know
what goes on with the details, and later it’s out on CD and people are listening to it.
It’s so cool to think about that — they’re listening to what I’ve been working on all
summer. I want people to leave with that whole spirit of Christmas and keep that with them after the show.

Q: Do you still tour with the ‘Idol’ folks?

A: I’ve been doing my own stuff, pretty much. We did the ‘American Idol’ tour
last year, after that I’ve just done my own thing. I did a couple of shows with
(winner) David Cook, there was one real cool show we did in Manila in the Philippines.
It was great being able to perform with David Cook and go to the Philippines for the first time.

Q: What’s next for you when the tour is done? Do you have another pop CD in the works?

A: Yeah, that’s actually why I’m in L.A. right now. I’ve been writing a lot and
traveling around, working in different places and working with different writers.

always wanted to get better at doing and do more of. … When you’re part of a
song’s creation, your personality comes into it and you have all that more of a
connection to it. It’s just been great.

Hi all – just de-lurking for a minute because I have been thinking about the Ann Arbor show since reading their interviews today. And as I said on another site, I really, really want Ann Arbor to sell out. If Disney was involved and David was paid the most of any of their prior solo artists, I want every seat filled. I wish I lived there – the word has to spread to all the schools, etc. (flyers in the schools? are they all out for all next week or are they in session Monday?) Anyway, I am in the SF Bay Area so this is just me wanting to get those tickets sold. (Maybe David could twitter about that concert soon or his “management” could do a big push?)

We would love to see this sold out, a number of us have been handing out flyers and emailing radio stations and TV networks to get the word out. But unfortunately the radio station wants $ for promoting him from what I am seeing. Although I have managed to get 4 non- profit radio stations to get the word out, at least they said they would.
I don’t understand this joint venture with A2SO & Radio Disney, I know A2SO is on a tight budget so why isn’t Disney doing more promoting for this show? Not one local radio station will promote this on there site, and I know they know about it. I have emailed them at least x2.

Thanks guys, a couple of us (FG & Rebecca) have been chatting with Dave at A2SO and promoting like mad for this concert, we want this venue filled
A2SO’s budget is tight right now, so we are doing what we can to try and help promote. I know there are others as well that have been promoting, I think Marcia said she has been working hard to promote also 
Hopefully we have done enough to get this more than 1/2 full.
Guys if you have an FYE near you they allowed me to put up a poster of the concert on there refrig. that faces there front window and put flyers in there metro times they hand out for free. So you might consider doing this if you have the time to promote the concert in your area

How did you arrange the gifting, kimk?
I went to FYE because they have a ticketmaster and sell his album. Any store that has a ticket master is a good store to promote for his concert, especially if they sell his album as well.

Now I’m excited! Just got an email from Delta telling me it’s time to check in!
Shuttle express is picking me up around 9:45 AM tomorrow morning. My plane leaves at 1:10 PM Seattle time and I get to SLC at 4:10 Mountain time. Actually only a 2 hour flight cause I lose an hour in flight.
Tina and I arrive at the same time. Lettie will be waiting for us then we’ll ride the shuttle together to the Plaza. I’m so excited, I just don’t know what to with myself!
Got most of my suitcase packed. Have a few more items I have to locate..not important stuff, just things I’d like to have with me. Need to go buy another mini-cassette for my video camera though. I have no idea what’s on this tape or how much of it’s been used.
I’m making my home-style noodles with turkey and my stuffing right now and will freeze them. I left written instructions for the guys to take them out of the freezer on Wednesday. My youngest son’s biggest disappointment with me not being home for the next few days is not having Rice Krispy Treats, so I’m going to make him some today. They won’t last until Thanksgiving, I can guarantee it, but at least Corey will get to eat some. He is really glad that I get to do this. When I’m happy, he’s happy. That’s my baby boy.

David’s eyes are an amazing pale olive green with gold centers–a color known as hazel. His height is usually given as 5′7″. I’m 5′4″ and he’s taller than me. And he’s left-handed.

Right now, there is Smokey Robinson Tribute on ice from 1-3 on KNTV channel 3 in the Bay Area, it reminds me of Kaleidiscope that will air on Thanksgiving with our someone special. I do love Smokey and the skating is great, but wish it was 2 hours of our David instead, well maybe someday, can you imagine?

I just back from passing out flyers at FYE, a brisk out there but well worth it. I took a good size hand full with me. Only got about 6 nay sayers this time, people were very congenial and took the flyer from me. I ran into some fangirls/fanboys and they were all excited he was coming to town, so please don’t be shy about going out and promoting him. It’s a very rewarding experience to do this and its alot of fun meeting people who are fans of his. List’s work at promoting big time and fill up our venues!!! Joanie-The Christmas Tour will be the first time I have been to a concert without you being there. We were in Lancaster/Allentown, SLC and AC together. *Sniff sniff*
hahahahha.. i don’t want to start thinking about thursday… i’m off tues through mon for the holiday, and every day will be busy with cleaning, cooking, shopping… everyone is coming in, so it’ll be a full house on thanksgiving… my bf’s folks are coming up from south carolina on friday, so i’ll need to up my intake of vitamins to keep up with everything… and w/all the david stuff going on this week, lord have mercy, hahaha

kimk, I think David is extremely comfortable in his own skin, its just he’s still working on sharing it with others. He has come so far with that. He is very strong & determined, but what I like is he doesnt have to stomp on anyone during his journey to the top of the music biz, he would stop & help anyone along the way who needs it. Some people do whatever it takes, no matter who they hurt in the process, but David is someone who DOESNT live by the motto the ends justifies the means. How you get somewhere in life is more important than the desination.

I personally can do without all the wild dancing and jumping and the such in favor of a beautiful LIVE voice. Not that I don’t enjoy a good performance now and then…I just think it shouldn’t be compared to actual singing. Because they’re not the same thing and it’s silly to act like they are. LOL. It one of my pet peeves, can you tell?

I can not wait for SLC videos on Wednesday. Thankfully I am off that day so I can watch David on youtube. My kids, sister and nieces and myself can not wait for December2. We are going to the grove, I am checking on ticketmaster and with no promotion here in Los angeles the grove is 3/4 full. I don’t understand how Jive or David’s management pretend to sell out the venue with no promotion.

Beth: I love Eureka Springs! Such a unique place — love all the Victorian houses!! And I believe you about not flying — another one of those places there is not an airport near. Closest to that one, maybe Springfield MO? And they mostly fly in smallish planes. I never fly out of there because it usually costs more and you’ll have multiple connections.
I would prefer to drive — but I just couldn’t convince myself to make it 21 hours there and 21 hours back. Planning on driving to the Kansas City show, though. About 5 and a half there and the same back. Not too bad.

Tina, It was beautiful there. We stayed at some place called the Pine Tree Cabins or something We stayed in cabins, big pine trees all over the place. Went to Branson, MO Saw Willie Nelson. Only show we could get into, but it was pretty good. They had a mini golf course on every block in Branson,lol. 5 1/2 hour trip is alot better than 21 hour trip,lol, thats for sure.
Candy, Everything is autotoned within an inch of its life except for David. Sad really. Interesting how kimk said when Davids mic went out people could tell he wasnt lip syncing & they were impressed by it. It should be the norm not the exception.
