The odd gifts American Idol 7 runner-up David Archuleta has received from fans include an avocado slicer and an egg slicer.
The 18-year-old, looking refreshed and energetic in a casual getup of green checked shirt and jeans despite a long flight from the United States, says: ‘I received them from two different fans in two different states, and I was like, ‘erm…’.
‘I couldn’t figure out why my fans would give me such stuff.’
Other fans have tried to demonstrate their affections more explicitly. At an interview at the Ritz-Carlton hotel on Monday morning, the boyish-looking singer recalls one fan who grabbed and tried to kiss him: ‘I tried to push her away without sounding rude, but she just wouldn’t let me go. It was pretty scary and crazy.’
Archuleta, who was in town to promote his self-titled debut album released in the United States last year, held a showcase at Illuma shopping mall at Bugis yesterday evening.
He leaves for Malaysia today as part of his Asia tour.
His success today belies an early health scare which threatened to end his singing career at the age of 13.
The Miami-born singer suffered from partial vocal paralysis, affecting his ability to speak and sing. He had to undergo vocal therapy for a few years before he could sing again.
For the young boy who loves singing, it was a very frustrating period.
He says: ‘I was really distraught. At that time, I was thinking of doing music professionally and wondering what I could do to get closer to that dream, and that had to happen to me.
‘Although it was a rough time, I am glad that it happened though, because I pushed myself very hard to overcome those trials and I became a stronger person after that.’
He credits American Idol for shaping him as a professional although he adds that life as a contestant on the hit reality show was stressful.
‘It was a lot more intense on the show and it was like boot camp. But it was good because a lot of my training and growth came from there.’
The singer, who was in town alone without his family, will be busy this year.
After his Asia tour, he will tour England as the opening act for British pop rock band McFly. In the later half of the year, he will start work on his second album.
He says that he would love to work with singers Natasha Bedingfield and Jason Mraz, among others.
He says: ‘Natasha sings pop songs in a very sophisticated way while Jason is so amazing. However, I need to learn more and improve further before I can work with him because he is such a genius.’
The singer, who lives in Utah, says of Singapore: ‘I love the warm weather here. Everyone here is so friendly and nice and I want to thank the fans who came to the airport late at night to show me their support.’

PETALING JAYA: Following in the footsteps of American Idol alumni Elliot Yamin and Chris Daughtry, David Archuleta comes to Kuala Lumpur tonight.
He will arrive at 7.40pm to promote his self-titled debut album.
During his four-day stay in the country, Archuleta will do radio and press interviews, make a surprise visit to one lucky school in Petaling Jaya, as well as perform at the “David Archuleta Live in KL” showcase at the Sunway Lagoon Amphitheatre on April 11.
Tickets for the showcase were distributed via sales of his album and they were snapped up almost immediately after they were released.
According to Adrian Lim, managing director of Sony Music Entertainment (M) Sdn Bhd, Archuleta’s trip to Malaysia is only one of two Asian stops.

THAT adorable little boy whose cheeks you kept wanting to pinch during last year’s American Idol?
Well, he’s all grown up.
Amid smiles and candid laughter, Idol runner-up David Archuleta was full of wisdom yesterday when he met reporters at the Ritz Carlton hotel.
He is in town as part of a promotional tour in Asia, and will sign autographs at 7pm today at newly-opened Iluma shopping mall, opposite Bugis Junction.
After losing out to rocker David Cook in last year’s finals, Archuleta signed a deal with Jive Records, home to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, and released his debut last November.
He has been on tour in the US since late February.
While his posts to fans and video blogs on tour are usually perky, he has obviously learnt enough about the music industry in the year since Idol to be realistic about it.
He’s had first-hand experience of how dirty the business can be, thanks to gossip mongers who speculated during last year’s Idol that Archuleta’s father, Jeff, was a control freak.
Among the rumours spread by gossip sites like TMZ were that daddy Archuleta was choosing all the songs for him and wouldn’t let him have water until he perfected his songs.
Said Archuleta: ‘I didn’t even know about it until people started asking me about it during interviews.
‘I was just being excited about the show and singing for everyone, and then suddenly people were asking me questions about whether my dad was abusing me.’
He added that others may have misconstrued his father’s assistance as ’stage managing’.
‘I needed him to help, because most of my free time, I was doing schoolwork.’
He noted that singers like Justin Timberlake and Usher are also assisted by their mothers.
At 18, he no longer has to be accompanied by his parents the way it was on Idol.
Teenage girls, if you think that means he’s game for some hanky panky, think again.
The singer, who comes from a Mormon family, is very much grounded and has no plans to join the Miley Cyruses and Vanessa Hudgens of the burgeoning tween industry.
‘I’m always amazed to meet artistes who are incredibly humble. It’s like, ‘Wow, you’re human!’ he said.
While he doesn’t bring his family on tour with him, he’s not exactly straining at a leash trying to get out and be wild.
Family, he says, is still No1.
‘The (record) label looks out for you as long as you’re making money for them,’ he said.
‘My family understands why I do this, and it’s not about making money. They’ll always be there to look out for me, no matter what.’
Although he states oft-repeated maxims about being a young star in show business – having his parents’ support, the importance of having a back-up plan – it is the way he says it, with eyes shining, that makes one believe that he’s not just repeating a PR line.

Don’t Let Go freaks can blame Pastel for this one. She had one of these videos in mind and had to share. This song had really moved up quite a few spots on my ranked list of DA songs after seeing it live. He is INTENSE. “And I know how to save a life…” Sorry, but gotta THUD here for a sec. He just breathes this song. As one of the commenters on the Sayreville video says, “I wonder what it feels like to go where he goes.” And then BAM! He’s smiley and happy. Dang.

Hi everyone! I just finished reading and watching all 5 videos at RazerTV of David. I loved how the interviewer let David talk and express himself without interrupting him or moving on to other questions. David is the most intelligent, humble, sweetest, down to earth 18 year old that I’ve ever seen. I am so glad that today’s youth have David to look up to. (and us adults too!)

Candy- My kids were fine today. Only 2 more days and I’m off for Spring break! After school today, my teaching assistant and I filled their Easter baskets with so much stuff that the parents brought in! Tomorrow we are having our Easter party (well, not really a party just Easter baskets and a video) and we hid the baskets out of sight so they think the Easter Bunny hid them. After we made the baskets, I stashed them away and the kiddos were like, “Hey where did our baskets go?” And I said, “Gee, I don’t know! They were here when I left last night. Maybe Peter Cottontail came and took them!” Boy, you really have to put on the acting skills for these kids but it’s so much fun!

NA Its hard to explain where I am moving to. We sold our house 4 years ago and decided to RV full time and see the country! My hubby is a retired Navy man so his pension allowed us to retire early. Regarding taking pics/getting autographs with David, please do not place high hopes on that. The MAIN PURPOSE we’re going to the airport is to give David a warm welcome, which he deserves. And even though the flight from Singapore may be short, he may still be tired from all the traveling, so let’s cut him some slack and just show him our support without expecting anything in return.
