Request Altnoy at Radio Stations Already Playing It
Yesterday Vox and Becky established the importance of getting A Little Too Not Over You into the Top 40. An FOD’er talked to a Jive staffer yesterday, who was kind enough to give us some insight. At least in the case of Y100, a song needs to be in the mainstream Top 40 before they will likely begin spinning it. This concept holds true for many other stations as well, big and small: way back when Crush was making its debut, I contacted several radio stations, both local and national, and this theory was confirmed. Unless an artist is already a big star, a song will usually not be added until it is charting in the Top 40. How does it chart? A big part of that is the number of spins it gets on stations already playing it.
It’s not all that simple. There is the theory that Jive is holding back Altnoy in certain markets in order to make it “peak” at the right time. For example, Jive could be planning to “release” Altnoy to big stations in February as a prelude to David’s concert tour and to coincide with his television appearance on iCarly. Maybe, maybe not. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if Jive releases Altnoy to big radio stations if the listeners don’t want to hear it. Jive could say later this month, “Okay, Z100, start playing Altnoy,” but if Z100 sees that Altnoy is not being requested often, it’s not going to get the spins.
There is a simple (okay, maybe “simplistic” is a better word, but it’s a start) chain reaction checklist here–AT LAST! Something to grasp onto within the baffling, contradictory universe of hit-making. I am a visual learner, so here is a chart, of course:

Button, Button, Who’s Got the Button? You Do!

Here’s a message from Holly! She designed buttons for FOD’ers!
I remember last August 3rd when I received an email from Jenny explaining that there would be a new website called fansofdavid. I hoped I would get the same info, photos, stories and interaction as the “old” site. Well, I got all that and so much more. FOD has been a place of fun, laughter, tears, and amazement. We have shared so much with each other including new grandchildren, job losses, family health issues, ledge walking, getting out of the SLTMD club, how to rearrange cds, stories, photos, videos, etc. We have been there for each other just like a family. I have made countless friends, a few who I’ve even met, and many who I long to meet. So when the tour schedule came out and we were all talking about concerts we would attend, I got to thinking, “how will we know each other?” So I came up with the idea of FOD buttons.
I recruited Andrew to help with the design. Within an hour of my first email to him he sent back a GREAT design. That guy is amazing!
So if you are planning on going to a concert and would like to wear an FOD button (or just want one), I have them. I have rounded up the cost to the next dollar to make it easier to mail payment. I can’t accept credit cards and I don’t know how to do paypal so cash is the best. I hope that is okay with everyone. Any money above my costs will be donated to a Wish Granting Organization in David’s name. So look for FODers at concerts wearing buttons and introduce your self!

Which Song Should Be the Next Single After Altnoy? Fan Review #3
Alexandria (Lexi) chooses Your Eyes Don’t Lie, and I LOVE it. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that song. It’s so Mraz-y. I KNOW it would chart and sell like crazy. Okay, I’m done shouting now and I’ll let Alexandria talk.
I have read the different arguments for different next single choices and while I agree with many of the choices, I would have to say that I believe “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” is the best choice for the single.
First off, it is a PERFECT follow-up for ALTNOY, a continuation of the “story” so to speak…I am not over you and now I now I know you are not over me.
Second, it is IMMEDIATELY recognizable on the radio due to the whistling, which would be a huge help when promoting him to people that may not know about him. “Do you like David Archuleta?” “I don’t know if I’ve heard him…” “Have you heard that song that starts with whistling?” “Oh yeah!! I LOVE that song!!” “Yeah, well that’s David Archuleta!” “Oh, I’m going to go get his album!”
Third, there is NOTHING like it on the radio…AT ALL. In fact, I don’t think I’ve heard anything like it. And for all the critics that say all of his songs sound the same…which one does “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” sound like? Hmmm?
Fourth, THE MUSIC VIDEO!! Can you imagine? He already showed incredible angst in the ALTNOY video…can you imagine the kinda “I know we’re not through” attitude he’d show in this one? I really think it’d push his career to the next level. People would be BLOWN AWAY. AWAY I TELL YOU. AWAY.
Fifth, I just love the song. I adore it. It’s my all-time fave song ever. And so that’s why “Your Eyes Don’t Lie” gets my vote.

I just had to write in about a wonderful “David Moment” I had this morning. I woke up dreading my appointment for a ROOT CANAL – ugh!!! As I lay back in the endodontist chair, mouth wide open and not enjoying the experience – what should come across the office musak speakers??? Why it was none other than David’s soothing voice singing “Crush” – just for me at my neediest!!! I gave the dentist a thumb’s up, relaxed to his musical magic and actually had some enjoyable moments during my root canal! David, you are always there for me when I need a lift and a prayer. Thank you David.

Hey guys.. Wanted to say kudos on the request drive..! I just have one slight issue with the list of stations that have online listening (please don’t hit me!! lol) .. I believe that most stations don’t really appreciate out-of-town/state requests, even if people were listening online (in fact I only know of one station that does accept those, but I’m sure there are more..).. Would it be a good idea to just ask people to request in their areas instead? I know z100 made a big deal about out-of-state requests, and I wouldn’t like to see that happening again.. Of course, it’s just an opinion; hopefully with the fans’ effort and Jive’s support ALTNOY will be a hit

ok , confused again…..with Nates post…… if we stream a station , and call in to request ALTNOY, and ask if they mind out of the area requests , would that be acceptable….. we stopped requesting out of state when we found out particular stations didn’t like it….but we also did a couple ‘hit or miss’ from out of state and got ALTNOY for the win in those areas….and the stations did not tract weather the call was from the listening area or not….we were all streaming it…..any ideas on this GG__??

Hey GG! That’s cool, I didn’t know about it being in the guidelines.. My issue here though is that in today’s post it’s pretty much encouraging fans to request to stations if they have a ‘listen live’ link.. I don’t know how I feel about that, to be honest :/
Joe that AT&T broadband is great but you may not do too well with youtube videos. It is just a little slowe but its great for on the go!! It may have improved since I had one too. I have to ask Tricia because she has one form verizon. I used my cell as a modem for a while and I had to wait for the youtube to totally load to play it and downloading took forever!!
I will check with Tricia and also see what I can find on the T shirts. If not I have mine from the JJ which is the same as DA.com . I will let you know.

The Do’s for Requesting ALTNOY:
* Call, text or email to request the song at stations INSIDE your local or metro area. The radio stations want to hear from listeners in their market(s), or listening area. Spamming phone lines with out-of-state or region calls will not make them inclined to play ALTNOY… avoid this at all costs.
* Call, text, or email your local Top 40, HAC (Hot Adult Contemporary), or AC (Adult Contemporary) station with a polite request for ‘A Little Too Not Over You”. Contact each station no more than once per day – alternating between calls, emails and texts is also a good practice.
* Anecdotal evidence indicates that calling your requests in during the afternoon drive time shifts is pretty effective. The afternoon drive times are sometimes handled on air by the station Program or Music directors – the people at the stations with authority to decide what gets added and played. If calling to request during the afternoon is not feasible for some, then by all means make your request during the morning or evening shifts.
* Make some requests directly through Mediabase using the internet request form. It’s fast, and easy. Here is an example of the MediaBase link:

Replace the XXXX call-letters in the URL with your local stations’ call letters. You can also write-in up to three (3) requests for songs not yet listed on their playlist. If your local station has a MediaBase Link, you will be able to access a form. If not, then submit your requests via call or text. If you don’t know your local stations’ call letters, try searching via Wikipedia or Goggle to find it.

The Don’ts
* Call, email, or text continuously in an attempt to harangue or harass a DJ or program/music director into playing the single. If the DJ informs us that they will try to play it, don’t call back and be rude or disrespectful with them if the song doesn’t get played. Keep uppermost in mind that the DJ has no authority in what gets added or played on their stations. That is the bailiwick of the music or station program director. Being rude or disrespectful will leave a very negative impression of the fan base, and could result in them being even less inclined to play this or even future releases from that artist. Be polite, be respectful at all times in making the requests!
* Call, text or email to request the song at stations OUTSIDE your local or metro area. The radio stations want to hear from listeners in their market(s), or listening area. Spamming phone lines with out-of-state or region calls will not make them inclined to play ALTNOY… avoid this at all costs.

Thank you Jenny…just went back and read your post again on requesting…it makes sense to me, that if a station has live streaming, and they don’t mind out of area requesting, than we should do that….. so from what I can see….there is no set standard….it’s a trial and error type deal…..and I do have enough commom sense that if a DJ is not happy with me calling to request, I will not do it again….. radio stations to me are just as confusing as our government…..
I am sticking to my local are but how do they know where an email is coming from??? As far as a phone call my phone is from Orlando but I live in Texas now. They asked once or twice where I am calling from and I said Harlingen which is in the local are. When I email I try to say something about the local area so they know I am listening right here.

#58/ Hi Robin F! They can track email by the IP address… some stations do, some don’t, so it’s best to tread very carefully…… same as with calls or texts in to stations for requests and contests… some stations are fanatic about tracking caller ID and IP address, some are not….
Best practice is to request from your local station, or the station in your listening region – unless the DJ gives indication, like in that ALTNOY contest on the Michigan station a couple weeks ago, that the contest or such is a free for all, and they are not actively monitoring IP addresses and caller ID’s…..

I will tell my hubby he will be releaved, he was worried that we wouldn’t be able to have all the right parts working for you. I see you are going wireless? Make sure you don’t do banking online wireless. Do you know that places that offer wireless internet, are targets of ID theft? The thieves have this device, that can tap into your computer from there cars and steal your information. It is better to be safe then sorry. We had someone break into our savings account so I am educating myself on ID theft.

Thanks guys for the radio information. I can see how this all makes since now. I am thinking that JIVE does want to hold back on making ALTNOY until iCarly / Build A Bear / Tour.
It is not going to be like CRUSH where it all of sudden hit the charts *bang* – ALTNOY needs to climb the charts gradually to have more of an impact. For example – Jason Mraz – I’M Yours- the song originally debut back in June 2008, but the song failed at that time. The song again was re-released in December 2008 and now is on the Top 40 charts. So I think timing and perserverance for requesting will pay off.

The Requesting Guidelines sum up all the basics in requesting ALTNOY – they’ve been there since January, so they shouldn’t be new to any of us… where we need to be flexible is in knowing when to request Crush or ALTNOY on some of the national request sites like AT40 and OHP – and I am definitely open to all the guidance I can get there – because it’s about DAVID in the end… The basics of requesting ALTNOY have not changed… it’s a matter of how many people have taken the time to read, understand and apply them…..
O.K. I just read Alexandira’s choice for the next single and I absolutely agree with her about Your Eyes Don’t Lie. That is my favorite off the album. In the first place the whistling makes it stand out right from the start and then you start moving and keep moving throughout the song. There is nothing like it on the radio and it would stand out because it is not the norm for a David song and I think that is what we need next. Something unique and different!

I move around and my computer moves with me so even if I am registered in Fl I am now in Texas. The only concern I’ve had with the request guidelines all along is the statement: request only at stations after they have added ALTNOY.
I realize that this information may have been needed to prevent an overload by anxious fans flooding the stations with requests prematurely. But our information doesn’t convey to people the idea that you still do need to contact your station to help get a single on. Starting with step one-has the program manger been contacted? How did you follow up? Using common sense: if the PM said maybe they’ll add it in a couple weeks, you wait a couple weeks, you don’t call the next day. Also, since ALTNOY has been out a month, I have just started e-mailing a couple of my DJ’s once or twice a week requesting the song. I don’t bombbard. I want the station DJ’s to know there are listeners aware of a new song and want to hear it. Many times they forward these requests to the program manger. I can’t imagine a station like Z100 not receiving requests for a new song. I think they would be surprised if they didn’t.
I wonder if Soundscene has already addressed this and I might have missed it. I would be interested in her opinion.
Okay so because I use RR here they can tell I am from this area. If I were to use a broadband card it has to go through Towers and according to which towers are being used it can be tracked that way. Is that correct?? I LOVE learning new things!

Catherine a perfect example is RAF ( rebeccarchiefan) She has been in contact with a certain DJ at her radio station. Lillyontheradio on myspace if anybody want to give her a shout out! She has been very kind. RAF calls her everyday and says hi its my daily request again and if you don’t ALTNOY can you play Crush. Lilly has been working with the PD to get ALTNOY added for RAF. She said it is in the works. WE DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

If we all step back, take a deep breath, and just use our heads about requesting, along with the best practices learned from lotsa trial and error, we’ll get through this… Lotta folks are just so impatient about ALTNOY exploding up the charts, and it’s not gonna happen… it’s gonna be a slower process, one that will take longer than Crush…. but everyone is on the same page in wanting to do right by, and the best thing for David here…

We send email requests for the song in to OHP on Saturdays up till the 7pm air time… at 7pm ET, we begin calling in our requests… it’s a lot of fun, and knowing how crucial these 3 spins are to weekend airplay makes me extra motivated to participate…. Hope that helped

We got a group rate at the Marriott fairfield inn already. Becky is going to post it.
It is more expensive ($99 a night), but it is a nice hotel, 1.8 miles away, off of a freeway entrance.
There is free breakfast, internet and wireless, pool, free shuttle from the airport, free parking and it a very reputable hotel.
Becky is going to post the info. You can call the hotel 208-552-7378 and just request one of the rooms in the block for Fans Of David and then pay for your room. The rooms are all 2 beds.
I was told this this was one of three hotels Richard had contacted to make arrangements.

No Deposit was required. It is just a nice reputable hotel and got good reviews. The breakfast also makes it very convienient. It also has several restaurants very near that make it convenient. It is one of three Hotels that Richard had inquired about but never heard back from. I just went ahead and talked to them. Julie (juls10) lives close to there. I personally feel very good about the Marriott. I wonder what Julie knows about the Red Lion.

Check with your school to see if they have an Internship Program. Alot of these Co’s want you in school while doing your Internship. Also if you look on the internet for an Internship, they advertise that they are looking for students going to school. It might be something to consider doing. I have been there and done that and learned that the hard way, my friend. Unfortunately, the school does not educate you on that sort of thing. You find this out the hard way…

I just got back from a ski/snowshoe trip at school. It was my first time skiing needless to say I was a spaaaz! It was still really fun! My neck felt nice and good because I wore a scarf! So my little sister comes in the door awhile ago and says to me, Jul! We worked on adjectives today! I go.. Oh cool! And she says, look at my adjectives! (She’s in fourth grade) They had to pick a topic and hers was David James (yes, she actually put James) Archuleta. And she has “adjectives” down like, 18 years old, CUTE! (with capital letters and exclamation points) , Honduran, almost won American Idol, and my personal favorite, he’s going to marry my sister! Oh my gosh I was laughing so hard. Thought it was really cute that she used him for her topic. (The teacher loves him as well, she plays the CD nonstop in the classroom I guess!)

Hello….I’m back. I know no one missed me, but I sure missed FOD!!! I have been without phone and internet service the last few days. Something caused a service interruption, and does that force a sudden miserable ODD withdrawal??? Yes!! I have been catching up with David in Florida and the FOD ALTNOY discussion. I have been so confused on requesting and streaming. We have no close stations in Yakima that play it, (we’re in the boonies)!! I have figured out a way to stream at work from AOL (on the sly) but not other places. Does streaming help with the spin count or not?

Streaming the ALTNOY single from AOL helps in the Billboard ranking of the song – it’s 5% of it… I think Billboard breaks the ranking down like this –> 55% – airplay, 45% – sales, 5% – streaming… the per centages for sales and airplay could be flip flopped, but you still get a picture how the BB ranking is determined… So stream stream ALTNOY the single from AOL – make sure you are signed in for added measure

Holly, I love the buttons, but sending cash through the mail isn’t safe. How about putting your design on the zazzle.com site? Then anyone who wanted to could order your fabulous buttons and you wouldn’t have to deal with the money problems.

First of all, do Minnesotans know that ALTNOY has been crowned champion of the “Newish at Nineish” contest on KDWB in Minneapolis?? It knocked out 5 songs, I believe! No small potatoes! So here’s my question…can we request a song as soon as it’s done well on a countdown, or does it still take awhile before they add it to the station? Someone said it could still be a week or two?
